Castlevania is technically a US-made production with an anime style, but I'd definitely recommend that one. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is general well-regarded and has some good dark moments.

Can I ask what other sort of media/books/creative works you're into? There's a lot of anime I think is good, but I don't think everyone would like it.
