    There needs to just be a warning label on things instead of ratings.

    For example: "This game is okay for people who are ten years or older, regardless of hiw adult it looks" or "this game is for mature audiances only. It contains blood, violence, nudity, drugs, and some other scary stuff. No matter how cartoony it may look, do not buy this game for your kids unless you're a horrible parent."

    Can't exactly do something about not getting interest.

    I Just gotta keep coming up with plot ideas and hope one of them sticks.

    Actually there is plenty one can do. Interest checks are a pitch. Even the best ideas can flop is present poorly.

    Do I have the exact key and answer to how to do them right? Of course not, but the fact remains that trying to adapt yourself and the way you do things is a way to alter the end result without necessarily changing what you're looking for. And that, in particular, I see very few people doing.
