Advice/Help Where to start?

So I joined with the intention of rp and i have been having fun with the discussions and even made a character thread, I have no clue on where to start. I feel many recruitment threads are too far in to join and I'm not sure about how to make a 1x1 thread.
I suppose it just takes time to get off the ground?
What did you do in order to get off the ground when you first joined?

So making a 1x1 search thread is very easy. You just need to put the following information. 1x1 Interest Checks

ABOUT YOU
- how often can you reply
- how long are your replies
- do you want to add romance
- do you have themes that make your uncomfortable (ex. gore or religious themes)

PARTNER REQUESTS
- how often do you want your partner to reply
- how long do you want your partners
- do you want them to help with plotting?

IDEAS
This can be a list of plots you have, a list of pairings you want to roleplay, or even just basic prompts.

Prompt - I want to roleplay a unicorn farm in a fantasy world
Pairing - Unicorn x Dragon
Plot - Character A is a young witch who recently inherited a magical farm from their grandparent. They don't know anything about magical animals so they hire Character B to help them out. Character B is a werewolf and is eager to get away from their overbearing pack.

You can also look at other people's interest checks to see if they have any ideas that you would be interested in.

Thanks
I think I can manage something like that. Been at the movies all day so couldn't quite respond until now
But yeah, I have plenty of experience with roleplay just not through this medium. Did some forum rp here and there but not too much. Not enough that I know how to make a good interest check.

Alright, I'm a little late since you seem to have made your interest check already, but I'll write this down in any case for future reference or anyone else who might be havign similar issues.

I feel many recruitment threads are too far in to join
One relatively simple, if a little limited, way of keeping up with threads that definitely aren't too far in is to keep an eye on the threads list viewable from RPN's home page. These are new 1x1 and group recruitments and updates when a new one is posted, always keeping the five newest threads from either on display. Of course, only looking at these makes your options more limited, in that the threads you like may not necessarily be among this list, but they are at least guaranteed to be fresh.

I'm not sure about how to make a 1x1 thread
Regarding this, Geek gave you some pretty good advice, but I would like to share two threads I made that might help.

The beginner's guide is meant for people who are new to the site, and includes among other things where to go for things, how to post where etc... Basically, the technical aspect of making an interest check is covered there for anyone to consult if they need to, among again other useful information.

The principles of a good interest check is less technical and concrete, as interest checks are a very flexible thing that depends on your style and taste, and there is no one way to "make them right", as different interest checks will simply appeal to different types of players. That said, the principles thread does detail on what I believe the base approach ought to be towards making an interest check that isn't just appealing, but also informative and respectful to the players.

I suppose it just takes time to get off the ground?
Always. In fact most of my 1x1 interest checks actually tend to pick up only several weeks after being posted, and well after having dropped from the first page. My group RPs tend to be faster than that, but even then I have learned it's pretty common for not immediately appealing interest checks to (really) pick up only after a couple of days.

Furthermore, one of the single most important lessons one has to learn as a player is that failing is inevitable. Not that every single instance you will fail, but that it is inevitable that on some instances you do fail, and thus it is important to learn how to cope and learn from failure, rather than letting it discourage you.

What did you do in order to get off the ground when you first joined?
I read the rules and posted an interest check with what interested me. I was what I would nowadays call a "simple roleplayer" (as in from the simple-casual-detail spectrum) back then, so I didn't have much of a criteria. I don't remember exactly how I came to how I am today, but I do know I started off very flexible and grew more focused over time as I discovered more about myself as a roleplayer, and that I kept plenty of activity in the site throughout.

Hope this helps, or if it doesn't right now, that it will in the future. Either way, best of luck with your search and happy roleplaying!

Thanks. I think I'm starting to get my bearings.
One wall I've run into is even when I make a post I tense up and get nervous with replying to people who are interested
Guess that's something I got to work on myself

I get a touch nervous when replying to people too! I tend to be less nervous talking things through in PM (without a potential audience lol) so I'll often just reply to say I'll send a PM which takes out a fair bit of the stress for me.

Yeah I've recently found the harder part isn't making the threads but finding the threads that interest me
No offense to the people of course, they like what they like and that's good. I just, for instance, can't get into fandom rp (that isn't FFXIV) and can't quite do settings with 0 magic or sci fi

You can use filters to only look for searches that have for instance Fantasy OR Futuristic prefix. There are also sub-genre for magic as well. If you select those when you are looking through the interest checks you can only see the threads with ideas that might interest you. It's what I do. I mostly look for RPs that are about Harry Potter or have Platonic pairings.

and what other criteria do you have? Cause honestly fantasy is on par with fandom, if not surpassing it on this site. There's gotta be other issues if you're having trouble finding a thread you like.

Yeah I'm more or less learning how to use the filter to suit my liking, even if that liking is super picky

I guess it's just finding one that has a story I like as well.
I guess when it comes to story I like action and adventure with some downtime between said adventures. Slice of life too is great
Thanks for helping despite how picky I can be. Hope to see you around. For now I'm just hanging out in the discussions

That being the case, are you willing to come up with that plot yourself or do you need to see it in the other’s thread? Specifically, I’ve been seeing a lot of pairing lists around there lately, so would you be willing to work from that?

Also, if it’s ok, I’ll ask your age. Since there’s also plenty of age requirements going around.

24 for my age
As for making it myself or seeing it in other, I think it's because I'm more of a follower than a leader. That and I'm not use to this format

I don't think you actually answered the question? Or if you did, then my apologies but I didn't understand what you were trying to say.

Allow me to clarify then. I was asking if you would be willing to come with the plot AKA the premise, yourself, rather than seeing it written.

For instance, a plot would be:
Great battles, heroic titles, epic clashes, all of these are just outside of (M) and (Y)'s range of expertize right now. Yes, these two specially made androids sent to do the agency's dirty work are no more than pantomime villains, mobs who constantly get their asses beat up by the heroes due to the crippling deficits with their construction, that the agency took compensation payment over getting repaired. One day, however, they receive the mission of their lifetime which coudl finally get them promoted...or finally put them down for good.

Will they ever succeed in their misdeeds?
(taken from my own interest check for convenience, just an example)

Whereas the pairing version might be:
pantomine villain android x pantomine villain android

My question then, is whether you'd be willing to work from someone's pairing list, or if you need them to present actual plots within your interests, in their interest check.

Hope that helps make it more clear.

Aaaaaah
I prefer seeing it written more. Thanks for clarifying. Maybe because I like going in knowing about the setting.
I might try and work with the pairing version though

I see. Well, I'll have to wish you luck then! From what I saw the other day, most seemed more focused on pairings...

I do say I'll recommend putting a link to your interest check in your signature if you plan to hang out more in the discussion forums until you find a roleplay. That way there's a chance players will be interested in your discussion posts and want to check out your interest check, which then will seem easily accessible by being in your signature.

I didn't even think of that, despite it being very obvious. I'm clueless like that
Thanks for the suggestion! Gonna be dipping out for now.
