first drawing! pretty proud considering it's my first one! this is mickey. he's a dork.

Pretty decent considering it’s your first one, I’ll take your word that he is named Mickey and also confirm he looks somewhat dorky so your art is correctly fitting your description.

Yay you and shit

This is cool!
Congrats on your new tablet! At first, you just need to practice drawing on it so that the lines come out less shaky, but you should get used to it pretty soon!

I realised I never offered criticism...
I’ll say the quickest thing I can point at and say work on is the nose mostly and secondly the hands and wrists.

Noses are hard to draw for anyone Im guessing cause they don’t want to make them cartoonishly noticeably but compared to the rest of the face it’s hard to make a nose look “real” idk I’m not artist

Also while a dork may be noodle limbed I feel he would have sore wrists and feel bad about his gangly fingers and nub for a thumb

Gasp! That's amazing for your very first drawing on a tablet! Mine looked hideous. Haha.
And does Mickey have freckles all over?? That's awesome.

My only criticism would be that you make the right eye (or left if you're looking straight at him) closer to the other eye. Just because the space between both eyes is a tad much. But other than that, as I stated above, this is a really great drawing!

Do you have pictures of your characters? I saw that you said "send me a character and I might draw them" so I was wondering if you, yourself, have a few to send to other people? Because doing an art trade or something would be pretty awesome!

hello!! thanks for the advice, my guy. noses are pretty hard to draw so i definitely to work on that. hands as well! i'm not sure why i decided to try hands on my very first drawing but i don't think it was a great idea. and i'm glad you think he looks dorky! that's the look i was going for. his personality is 100% dork.

This is cool!

thank you! yeah, lineart was the hardest part for me. definitely need to work on it.

thank you! and yes, he does have freckles all over! i'll remember the eye thing too! i think i have a tendency to make them wider apart than they should be. i don't have many pictures of my characters, but i would love to do an art trade! honestly, i'm not really sure how art trades work but i love the idea of it, haha.

SCREAMS LOUDLY THERE HE IS MY BABY BOOOYYYY

peyton i can't get over how GOOD THIS IS FOR YOUR FIRST DIGITAL ART LIKE MINE WAS HORRIBLE... yikes. i think that all the advice above it really solid!! some things though, bc you asked for advice n junk!!

bc mickey has messy long hair, i don't actually think his ear would be poking through it so much! it would probably be hidden behind his hair, unless he had his hair tucked behind it, ya know? maybe like the tip of his ear would show a little bit, but that's just what i think!! also his hair is slightly unbalanced, and i remember you said you didn't know how to do that, but there are all kinds of references and stuff around the internet! sometimes you have to struggle with it until you get the one you want, but i think it's still pretty good!! (i'm pretty sure the board i sent you on pinterest yesterday has hair references, or i could even find some for you if you want!!)

also for clothing - i noticed that the collar of his shirt is poking up away from his body, which clothes don't normally do! unless they have a collar, and since he's just wearing a t-shirt, it would sit against his collarbone. the same goes for the fanny-pack, although tbh idk what fabric fanny-packs are made of?? but its sticking away from his waist too, and since fanny-packs are supposed to sit on the waist it shouldn't be sticking out like that. clothing can be hard! using real life examples is a lot easier and shows you better how clothes are supposed to sit, or you could even just look at what your wearing yourself to help out!

the hat is REALLY GOOD but it's sitting too high up on his head. looks like it could be blown off!! it needs to sit lower, like just above his ear, unless he specifically has it pulled forward like that!

your anatomy is actually really good too?? like when you showed me the sketch i waS LIKE WHOA WHOA WHOA WAIT! because you got the arms length pretty good (although they could be a little bit shorter, possibly). you're hands, i'm sorry to say, DEFINITELY need some work but there are soooooo many references and tutorials for how to draw them online! and i could send you how i draw them too, even though,, i hate drawing hands a lot pfff. his hands kind of look like they don't have a wrist, and the top side of them should be where the thumb bone is at. also, with that tiny thumb, he wouldn't be able to hitchhike ;( the posing could use some work, like instead of having his hands hanging down like that, they could have been clasped together OR he could have one balled into a fist and the other grabbing his wrist or something!

linework is always super scary starting out, and i agree with onmyoji that you just need to get used to your tablet. also, i'm not sure if you wanted there to be gaps in the lineart (like around his elbows and chin) buuuttt having gaps like that makes it look a bit more rough. it's hard to do lineart, but something that i do is i go over my lines again if there's ever a gap or if a line is too thin. don't be afraid to do that, because you can always erase lines that are too thick or do a totally different line!! the colored lineart is cool, but if you're going to do that i recommend coloring your lineart a darker color than the clothing - like the hat's lines could have been done a darker blue (but the acorn could stay with the brown lines), and the shirt could have darker black lines! having colored lineart is super cool and something i like to do, and you can see some of my examples to see what i mean! here and here!

sorry this is so massively long but this is all i had to say that i didn't spam in our discord conversations :')) i still think its REALLY FRICKING GOOD for a first attempt, and i can sooooo see you getting better in the future!! definitely use references though for starting out, like for posing and for hands (you can use your own hands too!). i can't wait to see how you improve honestly 👀 im vvvvv excited omfg also you should totally draw jules

Of course! That's cute, not too many ocs out there with lots of freckles!
Yeah, I was the same way before! It happens to the best of us. (; That would be awesome! Basically, how it works is you give a person a ref of a character (descriptive description or an image) and they give you one a ref as well. Then you both draw a piece of art for one another. Whether that piece is a full illustration, a fullbody, a bust, or just a headshot will be decided beforehand.

That's great! xD Ah, I love when people love their characters.
Excited to see what else you draw up.

Yeah, of course! That's awesome. Maybe we can do one some time, I'm not really skilled in drawing people all that much so it would be good practice. Plus I love testing my hand at other people's OCs. (:

It’s definitely a good start and you’re on the right path. However I would recommend sketching to get accustomed to anatomical proportions before jumping into fully rendered paintings. This is essential and should be done before learning to shade and to choose values/hues.

Every drawing starts with a base sketch layer, even lineart. You can draw the final lines in a new layer ontop of the other, and delete the sketchy base once you are satisfied.

Try to observe models (Pinterest is full of good references) and understand the shapes you see, don’t just try to replicate them.

When I received my first set of good pencils I was so excited to start using all the colours that I completely disregarded structure. Needless to say I was very confused - my shading looked fine, but for some reason there was still something off about my drawings.
