Is 1000 BC early Iron Age? I lazily Googled/Wikipediad it, and what I read (assuming I read it correctly) seemed to suggest the Bronze Age ended roughly 13th & 12th century BC.

Follow up question: what weapons & armor existed during this time?

A question that kinda leads from this is did the Bronze Age Collapse happen? If it didn't I'd think it'd be reasonable to assume that factions would've had the technology to smelt iron much earlier.

I guess I just assumed it was a fairly smooth transition from bronze to iron, similar to how the automobile replaced the horse and wagon.

I just posted the broad-strokes of my civ's religion. But I won't be surprised or offended if it's not your cup of tea. I honestly didn't consider another player might adopt it as I designed/imagined it. ^_^
Yeah, just saw it, It's very interesting but it kinda seems like its more in-tune with the sorta civ you're running.

RayPurchase RayPurchase Would you be alright with me adopting the religion you've created? I'll definitely add regional flourishes of my own and it should make interacting ever more interesting. Plus we are kinda sorta in the same general region.

Elucid Elucid No worries at all! It's not too complex at the moment, so definitely add your own spin. I mean give it 1000 years and we'll probably have a religious schism, so fun times ahead!

My civ would be the only one that still uses bronze weapons. You guys have about a 500 year headstart in technology goes if we follow the real world. So hopefully you guys do not bully my milk drinking people like the Romans did.

Question for anyone/everyone: per 1000 people, what's a reasonable number of professional soldiers for a civilization?

I feel like professional soldiers would make up a pretty small portion at this point in history. Little more than guards and retinues

I basically suspect the same, though "pretty small portion" can mean different things to different people. Five percent? Less?

I would think a reserve militia made up of fighting-age men would likely fill out the bulk of most civilizations' armies.

I mean from some brief reading seems like the earliest signs of a standing army is Assyria in 600BC. Yeah I agree, especially given the populations I cant see it being more than maybe a couple of hundred, palace guards and the such like, enough to keep order but not really enough to wage a proper war with. Probably wouldn't be the resources in place to maintain such a standing force, at least with conscripts they work in the fields the rest of the time.

And good afternoon!

Good morning everyone.
Mornin' any plans for your civ that you'd care to share my man?

Slavery changes things a bit though right? If you were playing a slaver culture it'd make sense for you to be able to field a larger army since you'd need less men to tend to the crops and stuff.

I think you want the bulk of your slaves working the farms and industry while using mercenaries under order of your own people. Giving weapons to too many slaves will eventually lead to rebellion.

Edit- It is also probably cheaper to use mercs early on instead of training/arming your own people.

Agree their, essentially just hiring mercs in times of war or for short time periods.

Problem is this early on there isn't really the economical/industrial ability to maintain a professional standing army.

Hell it took the Roman's ages to form the legions as a professional force, and a heck of a lot of reforms, both military and economical.

Need some pikeman? Hire those northern savages.
Need some cav archers? Hire those people from the east.
Need some border protection? Hire that tribe over there.

It all works out in the end. Just make sure nobody pays them more than you.

Of course, any one of those groups can always march in and take whatever they want from your defenseless civ.

The gamble is what makes it fun. Besides you can just throw farmers with pitchforks at them after they get by all 20 soldiers. Whatever farmers get a kill and survive become Generals or something.

I know I’m late! I’m sorry!

Elucid Elucid I’m thinking of a matriarchal civilization, a war-centered culture, and the religion I’m still a bit undecided on, but I’m thinking of something a little similar to The Chantry from Dragon Age, if you’re familiar with the franchise.
