Fandom Kimetsu No Yaiba / Demon Slayer RP??

It is the Taisho Era of Japan, a time of relative peace and prosperity. However, there exists monsters, lurking in the shadows, that threaten this peace. These monsters, called Demons, are flesh eating predators that have lost their humanity and only seek to become more powerful by consuming all life they come across. For hundreds of years, Demons have plagued Japan and in order to counter this, an Emperor created an organization comprised of the the strongest swordsmen in all of Japan called the Demon Slaying Corps. With their only directive being to eliminate the Demon Threat and eliminating the King of Demons and source of this evil, Kibutsuji Muzan. Today, several new candidates for the Demon Slaying Corps gather at the base of Mount Fujikasane within the mystical blue-pink glow of the blooming Wisteria Trees to begin the final exam to truly test their worthiness of attaining the title of Demon Slayer. A truly dangerous undertaking that gives candidates a taste of the treacherous nature of their job, where only the strongest have even the slightest chance of survival.

Hey guys! With the release of Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer this season, I'm super excited to start up an RP for this series and see where it goes. This is going to be sort of anything goes as far as characters go so you can play canon characters or OC characters if you want with the only restrictions being that only three of the nine Pillars being playable, two out of the six Upper Moons being playable, and Muzan will be off limits for now. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy!!

Maybe interested but I'd like to have any sort of plot pitch before comitting. You know, what's going to be the guiding story thread at least to start with, anything in particular the characters will be doing to form a group, how the scenario'll be distinct from the series' general setting.

I agree with this! I thought all the spots would be taken though, so I snagged a spot while I could! But I am curious about what kind of plot we're going to have considering there's going to be Canon AND OC's in this one.
 
Yeah as far as an overarching plot goes. I dont entirely have an idea yet other than eliminate the Demon King. But Im willing to take suggestions since I planned for the RP to be more "hands off" and you guys make your own adventure within the setting of the Demon Slayer's world.

Okay, so pretty much our ultimate goal as Demon Slayers is to eliminate the demon king. I like the idea of starting with the Final Exam for our characters. We could have about 3 days (RP) to be able to survive, and show our strengths (and our weaknesses). If the characters make it out alive then we could become full fledged Demon Slayers! After that they'd get their own special messanger birds for the trial period they have to go through, and then we could go from there in terms of pairing up.

If you'd be okay with that idea. It's open for tweaks though if anyone wants to pitch in.
 
BTW, with my character's current backstory she has two brothers that turned into demons, if someone wants their demon chary to be related to her.

Mmmm, IDK I think I'll have to pass, I've had a real bad string of "hands off" games that are just kinda meandering nothing. With no real connecting thread to keep people's attention and keep everyone linked and involved in the story it tends to turn into separate little cliques or players writing alone in a corner, and with everyone encouraged to just make stuff up as long as it doesn't bother the rest people might as well go write a fanfic by that point. No offense.

I'll throw in some suggestions since you asked:
No offense to L0ck0n L0ck0n either but I'd skip the chuunin exams start. It's honestly not a great starting point for a game like this, offers little to no variety or even potential for character interaction, because ultimately these people are competing against eachother and all follow different schools. This kinda stuff almost always turns into people trying to out-showcase eachother stomping meaningless mooks even with hands-on GMing. Consider that the actual series largely glossed over this itself, and that the one significant demon in the test was an extreme anomaly present purely for the protagonist.

Why start with candidates at all when Yaiba itself quickly moves past from this phase and there's so many ranks of slayers? Wouldn't it be much better to have the regular slayers already be active, which gives them their blade and freedom to travel and take up assignments? The characters are gonna have a base level of competence anyway. Aside, the blades aren't only just swords, you should encourage that extra bit of variety and have people describe their unique weapon. If the goal is the super general setting-wide "hunt Muzan" then it'd make more sense for characters to be at the level where the idea is at all feasible.

And speaking of feasible, it basically isn't save for Pillars. Which puts everyone not a pillar at an objective disadvantage unless all of the PC candidates are potential pillar successor level. If they're gonna be that way, why have playable pillars at all when it's just a further division of the players. If not, why not just have the handful of slayers be pillars? There's plenty of turnover for them, no stated hard limit to their numbers and no school is assured a pillar, it's just a title given to sufficiently strong people. You could have everyone who's expressed interest make a pillar and it'd still be less than their total numbers in the series.

Which brings me to demons. What would demon players even do, given the only general goal idea you stated is for slayers. Generic demons are mostly weak and operate in specific obsessive ways purely to feed, they can't be in sunlight, they're all horrible people so cooperation is rare amongst them. The Moons are somewhat free of some of these limitations but they're, again, limited as you've listed them, separate from other demon players and pretty effectively tied to Muzan who can kill them with a thought so the player agency for them is limited so it feels they'll have little to do beyond vaguely menace hunters.

It feels you're leaving things way too open and your only hard idea is "Yaiba" and you haven't considered how this can be used to tell much of a story with people. Leaving things open is good and creativity and variety should be encouraged but you should pick a direction for the game and stick with it, make it so the players actually have consistent reason to remain together and move towards a shared goal rather than spread them all over with no start or endgoal.

You say no offense, but at the end of it all you're saying my idea is bad because of the fact that it could have no potential. On top of that you're saying this whole RP is full of issues.

If this was your rp then of course, you'd make solutions to plot holes that this RP does have. However, I only suggested the idea as a way for EVERYONE in this RP to agree, disagree, and/or state what they'd want to change about the idea. If everyone decides that my idea is not a good one then by all means throw the trash away. Also, I'm not requesting "Chunin Exams" type of starting point though I did label it as an exam. Also, I said nothing in terms of schools and going your own way. In the manga the characters meet each other when they are doing the test to become a possible Demon Slayer, and later on when they have their trial period they meet each other and form a team.

I suggested a full 3 days, and 2 NIGHTS for the pillars to interact with the candidates, and for a demon to come in and possibly change all of our plans. All of this was a factor when I suggested the idea. To be honest it seems you have less of a suggestion and more of a "I'm going to be bluntly honest about what I DON'T like about this RP" instead of looking at the possible ways of making it work with what you have currently. So, yes, I'm a bit upset at the fact that you pointed out how my idea was FULL of holes instead of actually come up with a suggestion yourself to progress this RP in the right direction.

I understand you don't like someone criticizing your idea but I did suggest multiple courses of action, you need only look, explaining the reasons and drawing parallels to the actual Yaiba to justify them. I didn't call your idea trash, it's become a pretty bog-standard shonen approach, I just think it doesn't translate well to this format, but okay you said you gave your prior suggestion to get responses from people so here goes:

Your idea lines up with how the chuunin exams were used in Naruto, which made that structure popular in general, compared to how the exam in Yaiba is exactly one fight with only passing interaction with other major characters who aren't even named at the time. In Yaiba the demon hunters regularly operate solo compared to Naruto's consistent team setups, even Zenitsu goes solo, the schools don't enter the forest as an organized collective and the objective is survival with solo prowess emphasized, it's effectively doing the chuunin but everyone's from a different village.

When they get their own blade it's not a trial period, they're full fledged demon hunters. Lowest ranked, but they're officially no longer prospects/trainees. Pillars don't involve themselves in the testing process beyond potentially training a disciple, they kinda have more important things to be doing, and that still doesn't address an ultimately unnecessary division of some players by objectively making them better and more important than the rest. This division of players also applies to having demons (who have their own issues and you don't seem to be considering) and the potential Moons.

The exam is specifically conducted so that demons can't enter or leave the area because of the wisteria forest, Fatarms was a very specific anomaly with a direct link to the main character, I'd think we can do better than try to repeat "oh no here's a higher level demon in the test". Your suggestion of a timespan doesn't really change much, because it's an extended period of time where characters that don't know eachother and have every reason to be worrying about themselves first and foremost are stuck in a vast forest full of demons where the only goal is surviving for seven days. This either tends to drag on or get timeskipped.

I'm working with what we were given, which was "there's no real plot idea here beyond hunt the super strong endboss" and unnecessary player divides. My suggestions have all gone towards making sure players can keep their characters organically linked through a collective, attainable goal, and advocating for players to be comparable to one another, you know, like how typically you want your entire party to be on the same level in an RPG.
 
Its why I said I'm open to suggestions, as I'm making a lot of this up day by day. As well as the fact I'm also GM'ing an RP where I am really hands-on in making sure that the plot progresses and that we make noticeable movement in the story, I thought it would be great idea to do the opposite to at least give myself a break in a sense and work with this RP differently than what I normally do. Clearly this isn't the case as it seems that at least to some extent you guys do want a tighter story, so I'm going to try and come up with that and have been tossing around ideas in my head for that.

Anyways to address some individual concerns. The reason why I initially started with the Final Selection as the starting point is due to the fact that its the best place for at least the majority of the Demon Slayer Candidates to interact. Also to point out that this is not going to be a 1 for 1 recreation of the event, and that realistically how it plays out comes down to how the players involved play it out. The end goal is to survive so while being able to individually show off techniques is good, it could be that the group could decide to work together to survive the three nights instead rather than work against each other. Which makes for a great place to interact rather than just send everyone off on a job that they'll conveniently work together for, as that's both unrealistic in the setting of Kimetsu no Yaiba, but its sort of a crappy deus ex machina that a certain group of 3 or 4 Demon Slayers will all be assigned to one job at the same time.

Concerning player divisions, the idea behind assigning roles at the start is something that I've seen be more effective the more I've GM'd and seen other GM's try to work with RPs of this nature because it sets in stone what a player's role should be, and how they should design their character. Otherwise I've run into instances where people have their characters claim to be new, but then are grossly overpowered compared to what they should be capable of or rarely the other way around where someone's character is supposed to be more capable but gets slapped around in combat. The divisions are meant to give players specific roles rather than have everyone be a hodgepodge, homogeneous mess of "Characters who are close to being a Pillar/Moon but aren't" and "Characters who actually are those things."
