"Imagine...what the world of Pokémon would be like...before Pokeballs ever existed."

Hi guys,

So with the new Pokémon Sword and Shield games coming out at the end of this year, I thought it would be a great time to use a unique idea I've had for a Pokémon RP. The concept has probably been thought of before I'm sure, but I've never actually seen or participated in a Pokemon RP that takes place in the past, and so to me the idea feels pretty unique. I hope some of you Pokémon fans on the forums may be interested in the idea!

  1. The RP would take place on some islands that are located very close to the Galar region, which is the setting for the upcoming Pokémon games..
  2. Instead of the setting for the RP taking place in the present or future like most Pokémon RPs do, this RP would take place in the past. I'm not sure if you guys have heard any of the fan theories that have been circulating about the history of the Galar region and how Kalos may have went to war with them 3,000 years prior to the start of the series...but lets say...that did happen. Well, of course...the Sword and Shield games haven't been released yet, and I don't want to take liberties with the plot of two of the main-series games that we currently don't know anything about...and that's why this RP is taking place in the past, to prevent any inconsistencies with the canon.
  3. This is where my idea for a new region would come in. As I mentioned above, this region would be a set of islands named "Laroe Islands", and would draw some inspiration from the real-world "Faroe Islands." The plot of the RP would be that Kalos and Galar are engaged in constant warfare, 3,000 years in the past. Pokeball technology would not exist at this time. At the beginning of the RP, the Laroe region would be a neutral kingdom, but due to their proximity to Galar, they eventually become caught up in the fighting. Pokémon battling in this time period would be more similar to actual conflict than a fun sport practiced by children. Although children would still be allowed to own Pokémon. Some Pokémon "masters" would likely see Pokémon as merely tools of war, instead of "friends." Of course, all of these mature themes opens up lots of possibilities for plotline within the RP, and I would allow RPers to go whichever "moral" route they wanted with their characters in the RP.
If anyone would be interested in this idea, I could use some help creating a map of the Laroe region (if possible), as well as figuring out some of the smaller details for the RP, such as coming up with names for the Kingdom that rules over the Laroe region, as well as names for the smaller villages that exist on the islands. I would also be open to suggestions for further additions to the plot, or criticism if it is necessary. I just want to create the best Pokémon RP I can come up with, and I would really like the help of other creative individuals like myself to make it happen!

I honestly like where this is going. I've thought about similar things in the past. I've had many Pokemon concepts, including a dystopian setting.

I’m very excited that you guys are interested in the idea for a medieval-themed Pokémon RP!

Now I just need someone who might be willing to help me with the finer details of the RP, and get it all set up. Any takers?

Depending on how historically accurate you want the setting to be I might be of some help. I realize it's Pokemon, therefore fantasy, but you mentioned wanting a Medieval setting.

I think it should be all of our jobs to help. RP's don't last these days unless everyone is involved, otherwise I find people tend to get bored easily.

Valid point. People need to feel equally invested in the project.

By “medieval” I just mean that I want it to take place in the “past” of the Pokémon universe. Nintendo haven’t really mentioned the past very often in the games or the anime, except for the story with AZ in XY, as well as in the beginning of the “Lucario and the mystery of Mew” movie. We got glimpses of the past in the movies with Magearna, Victini and Arceus. Nothing too in-depth, though. I think we could use those movies as a basis though, so RPers can get an idea of what their characters would act like, and what the world of Pokémon would “feel” like in the RP.

I’ll go into the lore and details of the RP a bit more. I’ve talked about how there would be “kingdoms” and “villages” in the RP, instead of cities or towns. The concept of Pokémon “trainers” wouldn’t exist. The reason why is because in the modern-day Pokémon world, Pokémon battling has become more of a “sport” to be played for fun. The reasons for this makes sense, of course. Wars in the history of Pokémon were obviously terrible, and just like in the real world...nobody wants to experience that. And Pokémon themselves are very powerful. So over time, it’s natural that the world would take on a much more friendlier approach to Pokémon fighting, and wars between humans would evolve into much friendlier “rivalries” between children. Pokémon “trainers” in the future aspire to become “Pokémon Masters,” but what does that term truly mean? Where did it originate? In the RP, trainers would consider themselves their Pokemon’s “Masters” because at the time, the concept of Pokémon battling as a sport doesn’t exist.

Since the setting of the RP takes place during a time of war, you’d see a lot of soldiers. Older boys and even females could be sent out to battle. Since Pokémon is in ‘’some way’’ based on real-life though, I’d like to believe that there would be “some” descrepancies against female soldiers. Of course, this RP is still a Pokémon RP, and I don’t want any misogynistic themes in it. What’s more likely is that female soldiers in the RP would be considered very “empowered” characters, characters you can look up to. Just as long as the RP doesnt get too edgy and still feels like a Pokémon RP, I’m fine with whatever creative liberties people might take with their character’s backstories or history.

Pokémon can also be kept as “pets” in this time period, as well. Most girls and young boys in the RP would probably be expected to stay at home, and some of them might even have pet Pokémon that they take care of. This opens up a lot of options for backstory, as well. Perhaps a young boy’s brother went away from home to become a soldier, so the young boy takes the Pokémon he has raised as a pet his whole life and begins training it so he can be like his older brother. Perhaps this is how Pokémon training originated in the first place? Who knows!

Taking this into consideration, I would allow RPers to make characters that are young children in the RP. Most GMs don’t approve of this because they are afraid of people trying to “romanticize” young kids. I feel like this drastically reduces an RPer’s “creative freedom”, so personally I don’t mind if players create a very young character as long as they stay consistent with the lore of the RP, the lore of the Pokémon series, the rules of RPN, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, as long as the RPers themselves have a common sense of “morality.”

Since Pokeballs don’t exist in the RP, a team of 6 Pokémon would be much more difficult to maintain. So in the RP, I’d like to limit the amount of Pokémon each player has to a total of 1-3. 4 is definitely pushing it, but if the Pokémon are small enough I could possibly see it happening. For the sake of fairness though, I’d probably still limit it to 3 for everyone.

Of course, since Pokémon battling is not a sport in the RP, the nature of it would be much more serious. It wouldn’t always be life-or-death, but since there are no “Pokémon centers” around, you’d have to nurse your own Pokémon back to health the way Ash did with his Charizard in the anime. Of course, this creates a very strong bond with your Pokémon, and that’s probably why things like “Mega evolution” existed in the ancient history of the Pokémon universe.

Another thing...villainous teams. We’ve seen Team Plasma in Pokémon Black/White. They had a very dystopian view on the modern world of Pokémon. They argued that Pokémon should not be kept in Pokeballs, and that the modern way trainers battled with their Pokémon was “wrong.” Their team symbol also resembled a coat of arms. In the RP, there could be some sort of villainous group who are similar in their views as team Plasma. However...in this ancient time period, that type of thinking would be much more accepted than it would be in a more modern society. So the villainous group in the RP could be soldiers, who truly believe that it’s not bad to treat Pokémon as tools of war. So you as an RPer have to bring about your own change in that view, so to speak.

Oh man, I absolutely love everything about this.

This is wild. At first I was thinking of like Pokemon Conquest, but this is actually a bit different. It sounds very cool and sounds like a lot of fun.

Oh my goodness I love it more~

Can I ask a few questions though? Would it be too troublesome if my character was a pokemon? Totally get it if you don't want just pokemon characters, but if it is a possibility you're willing to consider, then I'd love to have one.

Also, how strict are we going with pokemon 'rules'? Is it going to be more anime style or more game-like? Will we need to state specific movesets/levels? What about the sort of 'miscolored' pokemon? Not shinies, but the kind that doesn't really much in the anime (and I'm pretty sure they've never had one in the games) where they have varying markings and/or colorations.

Sorry if this is too many questions! I get a bit wordy at times.

I dont see why it would be a problem if your character was a Pokémon in the RP! As long as you’re willing to work together with your fellow RPers in a way that would remain consistent with the plot, there would be no reason why you couldn’t have a Pokémon as a character. I absolutely love creativity in an RP. That’s what RPing is all about, right? In fact, the main theme in the RP is going to be “How do humans feel about their Pokémon? Are they tools of war, or are they friends?” Having a character that “is” a Pokémon could offer a unique insight into the mindset of a Pokémon. Most Pokémon are very intelligent, after all. I’m sure they have their own opinions about what is going on, so I think it’d add an extra layer to the story if players could actually “be” a Pokémon.

Also, how strict are we going with pokemon 'rules'? Is it going to be more anime style or more game-like? Will we need to state specific movesets/levels?

I’m happy you asked me this question! This is something I was considering myself very in-depthly. I definitely want the RP to be anime-style. I want the focus to be on the “story,” not the game elements. I just don’t feel like RPers would have the same type of creative freedom with the kind of story I have envisioned, if I made it more similar to the games. Of course, because Pokémon battling in the RP will be more serious, it’s gonna be very, very important for every player to work together. One major rule I will expect RPers to understand and follow is “Even if you are on opposing sides, the person you are RPing with is basically writing a story with you. Anything that happens between the two of you needs to be in-agreement with each other. Especially when you are battling Pokémon.” Don’t get me wrong, I am a competitive person and I want RPers to feel like battles in the RP are exciting and really “get into” their characters and their roles, and the story. If you wanna develop a friendly rivalry with another RPer, that’s ok! I just do not want players to abuse each other, or the rules. Trolls and harassers ruin RPs very quickly, and if I notice that type of behavior I’ll have to respond to it accordingly. I wont hesitate to remove someone from the RP if I notice they are mistreating someone or aren't following the rules.

What about the sort of 'miscolored' pokemon? Not shinies, but the kind that doesn't really much in the anime (and I'm pretty sure they've never had one in the games) where they have varying markings and/or colorations.

Anything that’s possible in the anime is technically possible in the RP, so I don’t see why not! I don’t see how it would cause any problems if a Pikachu has spikey fur on its head, or an Eevee that has longer fur than a normal Eevee (just for an example.) However, I wouldnt want everyone making Pokémon that look “special” in some way, because then it would feel like the RP is too fan-servicey and would stray away from the original theme and mature undertones I had in mind for the RP. But as long as your Pokémon character looks like they could fight in a war if they had to, I suppose it’s ok! (Lol) As I said though, I love creativity as long as it stays consistent with the lore of the RP. Perhaps your Pokémon looks more pampered than other people’s Pokémon because it has lived its life as a pet, and has never battled very much. That would be completely ok because it would fit with the lore of the RP. Just keep in mind though, the world of Pokémon back then was harsh. Are you prepared for your pampered Pokémon to possibly receive a hard lesson about what it means to battle? To experience war? If that’s something you want to use as part of your story, that would be fantastic of course!

Sorry if this is too many questions! I get a bit wordy at times.

Don’t worry about it, it’s fine!

I wasn't sure how I felt about this at first, but I'm actually really interested! I do have one question: Would I be able to make an older character?? I've always liked the idea of playing a character that's older than most, someone who would have seen some shit in his day, maybe lost some family members to the coming or even a previous war. I originally made the character for a medieval fantasy rp several years ago, but it quickly died and I wasn't able to get very far with him. If you'd like, I can post his picture to give you an idea of what I'm trying to convey.

Yes, you would be able to play someone who is older in the RP. I’m very interested in reading what type of plot you could come up with for your character’s backstory in the RP. If you’d like to post a picture of your character, that’d be great!

is anyone opposed to using discord for chatting/world building/ooc? it's my preferred method as it's much quicker for replies and talking than RPN

also lets get this cs sheet up!

I think his name was Wayland, so that's what it'll be here if accepted. The majority of his life actually happened before the previous war. He was, and still is, a blacksmith whose ability was known as being on par with the dwarves (that'll obviously be something different in this rp.) He fell in love, got married, had some kids. Life was good. Life was great. Then the war came. Over its duration, he would lose his entire family, as well as his right foot. Either when the war was over or deciding on his own to leave the army of his own accord, Wayland vowed never to craft weapons for war again. Not wanting to return to his now empty family home Wayland instead decided to it was time to move to a more neutral kingdom, and after much deliberation settled on (insert current peaceful kingdom here). He continues his blacksmith work, repairing farm tools that can be repaired and forging new ones that can't.

i don't imagine any of us will utilize voicechat moreso than the text option. isn't the case with my other rps, and hasn't been to ones prior. so no worries there. what about everyone else?
