Science I Still Don't Get It...

I still don't get why people believe in the flat earth theory. If you really think about it, the universe is a very selfish kind of object, and wants things to be as small as possible. If every star and planet were shaped like a piece of paper or a dinner plate, that would take up a lot of room, and in the case of stars, radiate more.

I have heard that some people believe just the Earth itself is flat, but why would that make any sense? Out of the thousands of planets out there, why is Earth some special exception? And what about light? If water and land is set up vertically, then why doesn't around half of the Earth get any light for hours on end? If it's horizontal, wouldn't there be rays of light that got thinner the farther they shone? And what about Antartica? With it melting due to global warming and just natural causes, this "arctic circle" would bleed out the water into the center of mass... Which would be somewhere around Africa. And once there isn't enough room, then water will flow outward and radiate until we all sink.

I still don't get it...

Some people I've talked with about it believe in it because it kind of feels comforting. There is no reason for the universe to make only Earth flat, so it would mean that someone purposely made us that way. I don't believe that the Earth is flat, never have, but it is understandable to be a little scared by how small and meaningless our whole world is to the universe. If someone cared enough to make us live on a flat world, then they care enough to watch over us and know our stories.

That's not the only reason people believe in flat earth, but it's one that really stands out to me.

I believe it is because people always wish to be smart and right, and hold information that seemingly no one has because they are too inept to truly learn about the world around them. They want to be the holders of knowledge without actually needing to do anything, all because it seems comforting to them that they can fall behind an organization. It's true that science isn't exactly right or factual in every aspect, but that does not give anyone the right to defy something pre-established back in the BC times simply to seem more perceptive than they truly are. If you wish to strive for intellect, gain it by doing something productive. You're no fool to fail in the quest for knowledge, but you are to choose to set it aside for comfort food like you put it.

Maybe so, but I think comfort is important. Thinking the Earth is flat is harmless enough, and there's a chuckle or two to be gotten out of it

Comfort stifles the need to grow. Why change when you can feel content where you are? Who cares if you feel uncomfortable in this world? We all are, and nothing will change - not even death. Clearly, ignorance can be paraded and even shared among more people nowadays. While I think Flat Earth is benign enough, things like Anti-Vax is a dangerous gamble and - while not necessarily prominent everywhere - is becoming more prevalent. This comfort of knowing something the populous doesn't is what angers me more than the topic at hand is what I'm getting at.

Yeah, I get that. Anti-Vax is a whole different level and there's no rationale for it that I can comfortably stand by. And the whole thing about watching others refuse to accept the truth is frustrating, I get you there

It's like... If you want to know things, why not take the time to actually learn it? Clearly, if you can spin a whole storm of bullshit, you have enough brainpower to learn a thing or two, even with the most basic of sources.

Maybe comfort isn’t how I would put it. I would say it’s an attempt to question reality and authority. Yet a poor one at that. The thing is with flat earthers is that they perceive something is wrong with what they’re being told. With high institutions of clout and authority such as NASA for example who say the world is a globe or an oblate sphereoid if you want to be technical. I guess to a flat earther, NASA is a yes-man to high levels of authority and that their research and use of scientific methodology is used to promote and persuade people to follow some sort of agenda. So when flat earthers are presented with the findings that prove the earth is indeed not flat, they will stubbornly deny the evidence for being somebody sort of pseudoscience to further an agenda. Maybe they’re the type of people that believe in the deep state and how they control what we know and fabricate data to suit their needs.

Also on an unrelated note let’s say we did live on a flat earth and global warming remains an issue as it would be on globe earth. It’s possible the ice would melt causing an overflow and water running off the edge until we all suffer of dehydration (:

That’s true tho. A lot of flat earthers complain about how they think the globe earth and their place in the universe leads to thinking how scientists say humans ending up on earth was a mistake. Though I am sort of confused as to how that conclusion can be drawn

Well I watched an interesting video on this!

I know, right?

Why can't people just accept that the Earth is a cube???

Wake up, sheeple!

Everyone knows that the Earth is flat, you all just got it wrong.
