Other What's your biggest pet peeve within roleplays!?

When people try and assign character traits to my character without my permission if that makes sense.
Like even if it's clarified in OOC, just the fact that hey your character is a lot more forceful than how you described them or your character would be afraid of mine because of XXX and treating it as such always grinded my gears the wrong way.

In OOC it's definitely fun to make suggestions and talk about characters but that's kind of ruined if you keep assigning traits without me really, wanting them tagged onto my character and just keeping that as YOUR CANON during RP.

Also this is more nitpicky but I was never rather fond of god-like or super powerful characters with some cute/quirky "nerf" in roleplays that it doesn't exactly fit into (that isn't really a nerf but more like 'haha they're so small you'd never expect them to be as strong as a DEITY' or 'they're so sleepy all the time that they're only capable of WORLD DESTRUCTION' when they're mad).

Partners that don't even try to help me push the plot forward make me lose interest so heckin' fast.

I work hard on a dynamic, interesting post that opens up interactions while also nudging the plot along and all I get back is their characters reaction to what I've written and nothing more.

Great. Thanks so much for tasking me with the work of carrying this thing.

This may seem odd, but group RP’s that have predetermined roles. Like a list of roles you have to pick from if you want to take part. Usually, they’re all stereotypes, and come with descriptions that the player would have to follow. I just find it weird that you would limit potential roleplayers by not allowing anyone to come up with their own characters.

Maybe that’s just me, though.

OK, not everybody has it easy. I don't have much (not including a life) but life doesn't have to suck at every corner.

More accurately, low-brow, unoriginal plot twists. The dad was alive all this time? Really?
-Too much realism?
Does that count?

-SPAMMING.
Although, I will make an exception for memes.
-Fandoms.
I just can't. Most fandom's I've witnessed have completely ruined franchises I was interested, or butchered a franchise I appreciated so dearly that I had to leave. I understand that a lot of people are into this - a lot. But it gets really tiring to have to scroll through so many goddam threads just to find one that isn't only fandoms.

Yesssss although in character stuff is anything other than third person RP. "I jumped up and I pulled out my gun and I pulled the trigger and I killed the monster" just makes my skin crawl with fury. I can hang with grammar errors, poor spelling but please use third person.

That and superfluously long posts that are mostly fluff. When I first started writing I was obsessed with the idea that length = quality because I'd write maybe a paragraph while the vets were over there pumping out essays per posts. So that must have meant that their writing was really quality. However, rarely does a post require such length and most of the post was mere fluff.

This also extends to threads where two people are posting back and forth and end up with posts that are insanely long as each player is responding back and forth to thoughts that are post worthy on their own so there are perhaps three to four posts being posted to and responded to PER individual post.

Fandoms definitely. I've tried so hard... so very hard to like them, but it's just the cheesiest miserable stuff.

And for me, rushing. It sucks because I know that players have lives and when you have time and muse you want to write but in a story there should be a natural flow as people respond to each other, then occasionally there's a player that responds to literally every post in a thread / either that or two rushers that FLY ahead of everyone.
John -
Rick -
George -
Rick -
Abe -
Rick -
Which leads to
Abe -
Rick -
Abe -
Rick -
Abe -
Rick -

And it completely disconnects them from the others.

Time zones. Being on the other side of the world means that whenever I post in a character RP, progress is slow as hell because everyone else is asleep. But when I’m asleep and wake up, there’s new pages of post and actions with major events already happened and now I have to catch up.

For this reason I seldom do character rp but more nation rp

When I have a scene's atmosphere and tone established. The detail is there to motivate thought out responses from a partner.

And STILL get rushed or cut-and-dry responses that serve like scratches in a DVD. Immersion breaking annoyances.

One-liners, autokilling, and inexperienced rpers that does actions with asterisks.

Also, this one is not a pet peeve within rps, but a certain genre. Fantasy highschools. Enough please.

Ah, thank you.
Also I agree.
Fantasy blind dating is where it's at.

THIS is the reason I stopped playing in groups completely because I got tired of constant catching up to everyone. When you wake up and see 50 posts done without you it's extremely discouraging.

I haven't joined any on this particular site yet but by far, my biggest pet peeve when it comes to roleplaying is Overpowered Characters and everything that comes with them. A close second would be when someone makes characters that don't fit the tone of an RP. I like my characters relatable so it stands to reason that I would put an end to stopping entire armies with a flick of your wrist or dodging every single attack but having all of yours land. As for the second thing, its just annoying. You signed up knowing that this roleplay was set in Feudal Japan and you try to make a modern character arrive from the future.

Anyone who writes an all-powerful God character and absolutely refuses to abide by the limitations we have set for them.

Someone who feels the need to control how your character feels and behaves when they are around their character.

Any extremes that don't make sense. The popular girl that everyone is in love with for no reason whatsoever, the adonis male character that catches all the girl's eyes, the one character that parades themselves as "morally superior" to your character and but in reality is much worse than your character and is not nearly as likable.

Forced romances and the infruating hopeless romantic "looking for love".

Way too much sex.

Lazy, cliche characters with no real depth.

Overlydramatic characters.

Players who just don't react apporiately to any given situation.

When someone misinterrupts your bloody words and completely changes the scene you carefully constructed. This happened recently by the way in this very site. That's really annoying. Nothing much I can do, as they probably just misinterupted what I wrote.

Players who just ignore damage done to them. Or react in ways that don't make sense. Stab someone in the throat. Immediately talks the very next post with no problems.

And last by not least ..... and this is for any type of writing ---- anything that glorifies unhealthy/abusive/just downright sick relationships. I, thankfully, had never come across that problem in any of the RPs I joined.

These will always be my biggest pet peeves:

- Lack of communication. I cannot stress this enough. I have made the mistake of not communicating in the past and it lead to terrible misunderstandings. Less of a communication problem and more of a lack of input on my partner’s side, but it also drives me insane when I spend a good while putting my ideas into words only for my partner to be like “cool”.

- Utterly bland characters (this happens particularly often with canons). Sometimes, it’s even worse than the ol’ Mary-Sue. No matter how captivating the plot is, bland characters always ruin the fun for me.

- Ghosting. As emotional as I am when it comes to long term RPs, I prefer to be told when a discrepancy pops up rather than be left hanging.

- Formatting. This might be an odd one to some people, but overly flourished fonts, colours, borders and all that jazz are insanely distracting to me. I want to read the reply like the page of a book - nice and clean.

- Messy posts. We all make mistakes every once in a while, but sometimes you can tell when your partner hasn’t double checked their writing. Repeated words and meaningless sentences galore.

Magic as a bailout.
  • Get stabbed? Magic!
  • Lose a limb? Magic!!
  • Can't find an item? Magic!!!
  • Don't know a weakness? Magic!!!!
  • In danger from a really powerful enemy? Magic!!!!!
  • You or someone else dies? You guessed it, fucking MAGIC!!!!!!

This is one of those reasons why I don't care for magic spells as much as I care for magic-enchanted gear, like bandage that speeds up blood-clotting or magic-enchanted pain pills that kick in immediately. If it's not a hard magic system, magic spells without extreme risk or a trade-off is lazy and it eliminates all risk to any actions the characters do

This may be a niche complaint, but when people make their characters try to 'out-do' someone else. Bit vague, but hopefully I can explain it...

Char A is very nice, that's her main personality trait. She's a bit of a pushover, but she has surprising moments of confidence.

Char B is the same personality wise, but everything is put under a microscope. She's way more shy, but her outbursts of confidence seem more and more frequent, contradicting her overall shy character.

That's just kinda one way I see it, and I understand wanting the same types of character traits, but people try to out-do each other when they have similar characters to prove they're the better one at it. Also, this is more group RPs than one, people like to assume a lot based on OOC information rather than IC information. There's a very thin line between 'My character doesn't like you because she thinks you're doing yadayada' and 'My character doesn't like you because she knows for certain, and that is the truth, that you are doing this.' That only works if it's been revealed IRP, or your character discussed it beforehand. Not in the first few opening lines of the RP where you assume qualities and reasonings for characters.

Yikes my thing feels niche but I often see it happen in group RPers.

I already said it in another thread but I'll say it here too.

I dislike being made to wait and not know what's happening. I check on my RP partners after a few days of no response or no OOC chat and get a bad attitude back. But honestly, like if you just told me, "Can't respond this week" or "Don't expect more than a response or two these next two weeks," then I wouldn't check on you. I check because I don't know and you don't tell me and I don't pick up other partners because I don't want to overload myself.

Like, be as enthused about the RP as I am. If you're not, then don't RP with me. You can say no or tell me you're not feeling it.

What do you absolutely hate the most within rps!?

I absolutely hate when people simply just block you from nowhere and you don't find it out until you log in the next day to find out you're unable to send messages
one line responses i will murder a man his family and his pet if he continually uses one line responses
