Fantasy Is there a monster under your bed?

Kazehana

Vivacious Flora
No one would believe you

Overview and Prologue:

Humans, by nature, are prone to keeping secrets - secrets they are unwilling  or unable to share with anyone else.  Whether they tuck them under the bed, under the rug, or even stuffed them in a closet, they still exist, and they can always be uncovered.  Some keep particular opinions hidden, and some keep everything to themselves.  Sometimes, people keep dark secrets that no one would be able to guess.  These people are not murderers, nor are they inherently malicious.  In fact, some of these people haven't the slightest bit of evil within them at all.  Why should any of them keep such a dark secret?  Why should they be careful every day of their lives?

Most people are familiar with the phenomenon where children believe that they have a monster under their bed.  Of course, no parent could ever verify the existence of the monster because, well, it's just silly.  But what if they weren't wrong?  As it turns out, the monsters under the bed are not just for children anymore.  Recently, this has become a reality for many people, and it's not just children.

Each one of these people have been cursed with a permanent lack of privacy for they are forever stalked by a creature of the night.  These creatures are dubbed "the portent."  Each bears its own unique features from appearance to size to its place in mythology.  All possess the ability to blend in with the shadows, appearing to dissipate without any trace at the blink of an eye.  The portent obsess over observation and data collection, though they lack innate motive.  In fact, the portent are completely oblivious to the motives of their superiors.  All data collected through this program is directly relayed to the portent oligarchy and its administrative staff.  What these groups do with the data is completely confidential, and no information is returned to the field agents.

Portent are assigned almost randomly, with age, gender, social status, economic standing, education, etc having no apparent relationship.  Most portent field agents stalk the life of an adult, but some are still assigned to children.  The perception of this phenomenon varies greatly within the human community.  While none readily discuss it aside from the children, most feel as though they are simply experiencing hallucinations.  Because of the circumstances, no two afflicted humans have ever discussed the matter.

Other relevant information:

Geography

The humans in question reside on the continent of Agar.  It is a relatively small continent roughly the size of Alaska.  A majority of the afflicted live in Ether, the capital and most populous city within Agar.  The city is so large that only an extremely small percentage of its citizens are afflicted with a portent field agent.  In fact, the entire continent contains less than 50 portent at any one point in time.  The time period of the plot is roughly the equivalent of the early 21st century.  So, modern day.  Humans have no apparent unique capabilities.  Without spoiling anything, this does not mean they won't be fun to play within the plot.

Agar

Agar

The climate and wildlife are identical to modern day.  The only difference between reality and this universe is the existence of portent, which isn't known to humans.  Biomes range from tropics to temperate, so basically anything that can be found in that range of biomes is viable.

Despite modern technology, some of the land remains natural for religious reasons.  Other natural lands are due to conservation efforts and/or viability of development was too low to make use of the land.

Agar operates under one republic government.  Representatives are elected, then those representatives go make laws and whatever.  This contrasts with the portent heavily, who are governed by an oligarchy.  This oligarchy dictates portent law and directly oversees their own administrative staff.  This staff controls the entire operations of the field agents.

Religion

Agar operates under one, ambiguous religion.  The details of the religion are irrelevant to the plot, but some aspects do come into play.  The most important aspect of the religion is that it calls for the use of shrines, which people go to to communicate with their deities and such.  However, there are only 8 shrines throughout Agar, placed fairly equidistant from each other.  It is rumored that in ancient times, the shrines were built to ward off demons that terrorized humans and have been there ever since.  No shrines have been created since these were installed.  Home-made or artificial shrines of any kind do not provide people with any sort of blessing from the gods, making them largely ineffective and impractical to make.

The land around the shrines is considered holy, and is thus barred from human development.  These lands span approximately 150km from the shrines.

Shrine Example

The lake shrine

The humans believe in the power of the Holy Trinity, the three gods they believe to govern them all.  Courant, the god of motion, is said to govern the flow of material and energy throughout the universe.  Corporel, the goddess of substance, is said to govern the aggregation and destruction of all things.  Lustre, the goddess of light, is said to give character and energy to all living things.  These deities work together to to create and maintain the world as it is.  Their involvement with political and social matters remain at a minimum.  They are said to have created the universe and all its inhabitants, but have had no major involvement otherwise.

According to religious history, the earliest documented event was an era in which humans were suppressed by demons, dubbed The Demon Age.  During this time, demons freely roamed the continent without fear or any reason to hide.  Their presence darkened the sky, further increasing their power and influence over the humans.  The humans, scared and fearful, lived in isolation in the most unfavorable of environments.  Some lived in the mountains in central Agar, some lived in the swamps to the north, and others hid in the deserts.  It was miserable for the longest of times.  Humans could only contact other colonies through treacherous conditions, always risking their lives to scurry across the continent. It was only when 8 of the humans, each from an unfavorable region of the world, stepped up and defied the beasts that the humans' hope rekindled.  Through their abhorrous communication system, they were able to make their final journeys to the demon settlement northwest of the mountains.  The group was caught in an abandoned house on the outskirts of the settlement, but it was too late.  The humans, consisting of 2 elders, 3 adults, 2 young adults, and 1 child, had already set their plan into motion.  Each bore something peculiar - an object from their homeland.  When they were caught, the objects had already begun to glow, each with a different color.  The elders held the essence of red and violet, the beginning and end of all colors.  The adults bore yellow, green, and blue, the core of all colors.  The young adults represented orange and indigo, the link holding the colors together.  The child bore the color white, purest and most innocent.  As the objects glowed brighter, they produced a beam that converged on the epicenter of the humans.  The colors danced in a brilliant rainbow as it gathered energy, repelling the demons from approaching.  Without warning, it burst into the sky as a beam, spreading out and covering the land.  It is said that the gods had blessed these humans with the power to smite all evil within the land, eradicating the power the demons possessed.  With the land illuminated and the people once again empowered, the humans were able to drive out the demons from the continent and reclaim Agar for their own.  The humans involved with the light disappeared without a trace, only their objects left behind.  The location of these objects and their identities are unknown.  The shrines were soon established and infused with the prayers of the humans to keep the monsters away.  Since then, humans have ruled the continent and were allowed to flourish.  However, this is only a story that enforces the validity of the gods.  People use the shrines to pray away their woes and ask for assistance from the gods.

Portent Information

Portent can be of any variety found in mythology, but only one of each type exists within this universe.  Every portent must be considered somewhat evil or at least not good; remember, portent are supposed to be ominous to the humans.  Each may have exactly one unique power to add variety to their character, but all will be able to meld with the shadows and essentially be untraceable and undetectable.  This skill is necessary for the discrete nature of the portent.  Because of the physical limitations of the portent, they cannot directly interact with objects in the light.  Darkness relieves them of this limitation so they are basically able to freely do whatever.  Some portent are inherently more powerful than others.  Without spoiling anything, there are plot benefits for being lower class, but there are inherent benefits for being upper class.

There is no defined antagonist for this plot.  Anyone and everyone could be a complete dick.  In contrast, anyone can be a total sweetheart, including portent.  Just keep in mind that portent are forbidden from supporting their human or establishing friendship.  Any portent that does so will be immediately discharged.  Haunting and being spoopy is encouraged, but not required;  only the information is needed.

Portent can be seen and touched by anyone.  They have the same emotional and mental capacity as humans.  While this race has a lifespan approximately 3 times longer than humans, they are capable of harm and death.  Therefore, they can contract illness, and they have some pathogens specific to portent.  These creatures reproduce, but do not produce any combination of the parents.  After conception, these creatures undergo a susceptibility period where the environment alters their genes to a new creature.

For the plot to be successful, we need approximately a 50/50 split between humans and portent.  If we have slightly more on either side, more portent would be favorable.  We also need approximately a 50/50 split between upper and lower class portent.  It does not matter which side has slightly more.  Every class involved has equal benefits and drawbacks, so do not try to think too much into what category is better.

Plot:

This will start relatively soon into the story and will naturally allocate all characters to the same location.  Because of this, it is not necessary for any character to do anything or meet anyone before the plot begins.  However, all humans will have an already established relationship with their respective portent.  Expect there to be a lot of shenanigans with the plot.

Any and all suggestions for the plot are welcome.  I will do my best to incorporate as much creativity as possible.  Just note that i will not incorporate plot aspects that contradict the main plot already established.  Yes, I already have major events of the plot summarized.  Although I have the majority of the main plot planned out, I encourage a group effort in creating an intriguing story.

There is not a character limit, but make sure you can keep up with whatever you make.

I love roleplays like this. The potential dynamics between characters...oh man.

Forgive me for taking like 10 years to reply.  I'm trying to create a high degree of freedom without making it sandbox-y. So like, I feel that this gives the characters limitless possibilities, but there can still be structured plot events to keep the story interesting.  My main goal is to keep the roleplay interesting and the people involved interested so it doesn't die like a lot of good ideas on this site.

Would you be interested this idea?

Not what I expected; much more creative. This seems excellent so far. I'm in ! Just a couple of questions, though..

What's the character limit ?

Does each person get one Portent and one Human at least ?

Could the Portent interact with the Human while they are both in a dark area (say, a forest at night, when the lights go out...etc) ?

Could anyone see the Portent, or is it only the human to which they are assigned ?

Do we have magic ?

What sort of wildlife do we have ?

Do we have wild (or not) mythological creatures (dragons, phoenixes, gryphons, kappas, etc) ?

No limit.  Doesn't matter to me how many you have as long as you can keep up and don't overwhelm yourself.

In short, yes.

Anyone can physically see them, but the portent are not allowed to be seen by anyone other than their assigned human by law.  The entire purpose of their ability to meld with the shadows is supposed to grant them a guaranteed escape from being sighted by randos.  If they are compromised, severe consequences are not far behind.

Portent do; humans do not.

Normal wildlife - this world is almost exactly the same as Earth but with portent.  Wildlife is mostly animals and plants from tropical to arctic biomes depending on what part of the continent is in question.

Portent are the only potentially mythological creatures. This makes the existence of portent mostly skeptical to humans and easily deniable.

If you have more questions let me know!  These are things I definitely need to revise in the overview

I see. So we've got, say, elephants and bears and orangutans and stuff ?

 1. Also, what about "unofficial" shrines ? Like little ramshackle home-made shrines sort of thing. Or attempts at making shrines, perhaps.
 2. And I believe the whole kingdom is united under one nation, or are there different, independent villages ?
 3. Are humans like modern-day humans, lifespan-wise ?
 4. Did dinosaurs exist in this world ?
 5. Who assigns the Portent (don't think I understood that part very well) ?
 6. Can the Portent escape, or are they bound with something similar to a magic contract, like a house elf ?
 7. What feelings do the Portent feel; can they fall in love, hold vendettas and grudges, feel remorse, guilt, triumph ?
 8. Can they speak to the humans ?
 9. Do Portent reproduce, or do they just... exist ? Or do they just appear out of nowhere ? Or is it a case-by-case situation ?
 10. Are the Portent mortal/could they be harmed, killed, maimed, incapacitated in any sort of mortal way ?
 11. Could the Portent get sick in some way or another ? Do they need food and hydration in order to survive ?

And one more thing.

In short, yes.

Is this an answer to question 2 or 3 ?

Is this an answer to question 2 or 3 ?
 1. Home-made shrines are significantly ineffective compared to the real shrines.  Most people find that they receive no blessings from using these, so it's mostly not a thing.
 2. I really didn't think about this but I would assume this is a form of a singular republic government.  So, federal law dictates crimes and such, and city law dictates ordinances.
 3. Yes.
 4. Yeah sure why not.  Not super sure how relevant this is unless a human in the story is an archaeologist.
 5. The administrative staff of the oligarchy coordinate all the efforts of the field agents.
 6. Portent can do whatever they want, but they follow the oligarchy law because of reasons similar to why humans follow the law of their government.  There are consequences to breaking the rules.  They do not have a say as to whom they are assigned.  So it's not a contract, but it is compulsive.
 7. They have the same emotional capacity and connections as humans.
 8. Yes.  This is important for both being relatively ominous and collecting necessary information.
 9. Portent reproduce, but do not undergo conventional genetic recombination.  While the parental chromosomes cross over and are delivered to the offspring as usual, the genes are exposed to a "susceptibility period" where the environment can influence genetic structure through point mutations (no frameshift mutations).  During this time, many genes are altered to the state of uniqueness.  Therefore, offspring rarely bare resemblance to the parents.  Typically, mutations are unstable and result in a failed pregnancy, severely reducing the fecundity of this race.  Gestation period is roughly the same as humans.  All made up right now on the spot because I didn't think about this, so it's not super solid.
 10. Yep, they can be hurt and killed.  Their lifespan is significantly longer than a human's (~3x longer), and thus their fecundity is consequently significantly lower (extremist K-selection).
 11. They can be sick, but not with human diseases.  I don't know what, but we can make that up later.  They do require food like people; I cannot think of a valid reason around this.

That was for the second question.  If you have multiple characters, I just ask that you try to balance between humans and portent to keep the sides roughly even.  So one of each is okay, but not like 3 of one and none of the other.

Animals are respective to the biomes, so they are only found where they should exist ecologically.

This sounds interesting! If I may I'd like to join in.

Also just poking at the food thing, the portent could with the susceptibility period have different ways to acquire nourishment? Depending on how they are "formed", it could be normal like humans, to stuff like Cellular respiration (Since Photosynthesis requires sunlight.) To maybe emotions like the common ones like fear joy anger.. Or maybe something like empathy or guilt? To other stuff.. Maybe the portent eats things that are considered valuable or maybe even something related to the shrines?

Of course!

That's an interesting idea.  Perhaps they require extra intake of specific things due to unique body parts.  Humans need calcium for bones, so maybe like something with scales needs something like additional amino acids to make the proteins.  Or iron if someone really felt like it.  I'm not really  sure if emotions could serve as a source of energy just because it doesn't release energy so there's nothingg to capture.  Portent cannot approach shrines, which includes the hole land surrounding it.

..Should've probably have realized that with the shrines..

The emotions thing was sorta with.. Dementors from Harry potter or.. You know something along the lines of  'psychic vampires', as you've said they had 1 power as well as being able to meld with the shadows, mind powers of some sort.. Wraith-ish? But yeah just me throwing a suggestion out there.. But I guess it depends on the rules the portent have, like they can't harm the assigned person, I'm guessing?

I never really understood how dementors worked tbh.  Are souls their food?  And if so, wouldn't they have to eat a lot of souls regularly?  Not one dementor actually succeeds in eating a soul in the entire franchise, so how are they not starving?

Well, harming the person and the person still having evidence of said previous harm later would suggest that the portent are real, which is a big nono.  They're going for maximum deniability here, so if there's evidence left behind, that's not good.

Dementors feed on happiness, so in doing so they create despair and depression.

They can consume a soul, which is called Dementor's Kiss.

But to change it from emotions.

What about dream-eating?

That's something to think about for sure!  The thing is, they kind of need substance if they are physical beings and not ghost-like demontors.  Can't maintain the body without resupplying it with the nutrients it needs!  Maybe this is like a treat? Like ice cream? That still gives them motivation to do it right?

Oh yeah never thought about that actually, my kind of sweet is just about only tea.

Fantastic, I got some ideas now.

So here's this in case people wanted to create a CS now

Wait do we.. Create them here? Or is it just for those that are really itching for it and it'll be moved to another thread of sort?

Well.. The timing.. Couldn't have been cut closer.. And sorry for the dp.

I'll get to work tomorrow evening on it. I'm a tad busy with stuff tonight and gotta drive home from my university campus tomorrow.

Lol we're not gonna write it here.  It was just to get started if you wanted

I made the thing while you wrote that I think xD
