Viewpoint Type of Roleplays: Tired of Seeing? Want to see more of?

Sometimes it seems like there's a round of roleplays that come out where everyone has the same mindset. Which I'm not necessarily complaining.

What roleplay topics/ideas are you tired of seeing constantly? What would you like to see more of?

Share why if you would like.

For me,
Some time ago, there was a huge thing on vampire roleplays and while vampire's can be potentially "cool" - it all tends to look the same to me at some point.

I would probably like to see more DnD-esc games as it's been awhile for me. Or ones that incorporate dice.

Less of:
- School/Academy Roleplays... especially Harry Potter.
With that new game coming out, HP seems to have made an annoying resurgence.
- Royalty/political RPs
- Superhero/Superpower RPs
- Isekai RPs
- Zombie Apocalypse RPs
- Vampire/Werewolf clan RPs
- RPs based on the latest Netflix trend
- Sci-fi Military/Para-military RPs
- Boring-ass modern slice-of-life settings
- Insta-girl/boy faceclaims
- Anime faceclaims
- Anime Fandoms

Why?:
Because these topics are dull. Because they've been done to hell and back. Because it would be nice to see something fresh on here that actually interests me. Because I don't like anime and don't understand everyone's infatuation with it. lol

More of:
- Spacey sci-fi (Space Opera/Space Western) Roleplays that aren't just a mimicry of Star Trek
- Wild West Fantasy (also called "Weird West")
- Classic High Fantasy (to include Sword and Sorcery)
- Carpathian (vampire/werewolf classic) RPs where the PCs are hunters and not the Vampires/Werewolves
- Goblins (NOT the anime!)
- Fandoms that aren't anime

Why?:
Because these subjects actually interest me. I've even tried to pitch some myself as group RP. But the interests didn't seem to be there. Maybe bad timing, but who knows? I figure if more people were into it, or if just someone else would attempt it, then I could get in on their RT and not spend hours of my own freetime in making a setting that goes to waste.

Tired of seeing:
-School RP's: I'm an adult, I went through school so don't want to relive it. My school experience sucked for the most part.
-Anything anime related: This is more of a personal grievance since I'm just not into anime all that much.
-Zombie apocalypse RP's: These are just overdone. There's so many other apocalypse scenarios to explore that are more interesting.
-Slice of life: I live mundane real life so why would I want to write about it? Realistic RP's are fine, but there needs to be more to it to keep me interested.
-Basically anything following whatever the latest media trends are: I get that people will want to RP whatever is popular at any given time, but we don't need a gazillion RP's of the same thing. It's redundant.

Want more of:
-Historical RP's in non-western settings: Historical RP is my jam, but I just wish people would choose settings besides just WW II, Victorian England, Medieval England, Wild West, etc.
-RP's about super-powers/mutations not set in the Marvel or DC-verse: Marvel and DC have been milked to death so for the love of everything holy, cut it out! Plus I hate writing canons.
Realistic war RP's: I enjoy the band of brothers trope, basically soldiers bonding over their shared experiences. It's something I'd love to see more of in any type of setting or era.
Political and/or spy thrillers: Pretty self-explanatory. It is niche, but it's something I think is super fun.

Boring is subjective! I don't tend to enjoy high fantasy with lots of world-building. It's a lot to keep track of and especially when the GM is strict, making a slip-up in your post can be really daunting.

I would love to see more interesting post-apocalyptic plots! My favourite is eternal winter, everything's coated in snow, it's hard to grow food and you're battling with the cold and other people.

I'm just tired of seeing rps I want to join but I don't have time to be a part of. Stop making such good ideas!! /joke 😔

But to answer the question, I actually despise "there's only one bed" trope when it's in a group roleplay room assignments. I don't care for realism but no way half the characters have to share a bed with a stranger.

I had a multifandom rp (ocs were allowed) based on this premise but it would never stick. It kept dying until I just gave up. It's really discouraging.

Anyways. I want to see less HP stuff tbh. With how nasty of a human being JK Rowling is, it makes me uncomfortable to see so much stuff relating to it. I know that I should probably "separate the author from the media" but as a trans man, seeing people obsess over this is kinda scary, yknow?

And don't kill me but before she was widely known as a terf I tried reading the books. The writing quality was so bad, man. So bad. I couldn't get past the poor writing technique. How did it ever get past editors???

I also want to see less JJBA. It's a personal reason, it's a trigger, so it's my own issue and I do not plan on harassing people to take them down bc they have every right to have their fun, too. But it still makes me HIGHLY uncomfortable to see JJBA threads because of a bad experience I had regarding that Fandom.

Rants aside, I'd like to see more crossover stuff or well thought out plots having to do with the supernatural. Or dragons. Dragons are always good.
I'm also always down for like. Tropes that have a unique spin on it. I'm working on a rp that's both Sci fi and fantasy. And kinda an isekai but very light on that. Less suddenly transported to a new world and more like "I'm addicted to this media and its absorbed my sense of reality" type thing. I hope it can actually kick off, considering my last attempts at rps haven't gone well. OTL.

What is JJBA?

Want less of
- I totally agree with DovahBeat DovahBeat about HP, for all the same reasons. I can't conscience continuing to boost JKR's cultural relevance after the things she's said, done, and supported.
-Celebrity stuff, especially real-life celebrities.
-Romance, pregnancy, and child-rearing plots that reinforce stale misogynist tropes.
-Historical and military RPs that glamorize war crimes and mass violence. Weirdly common.

Want more of
- Slice of Life that focuses on underprivileged urban areas and the struggles of finding community in that kind of environment. I feel like a lot of SoL centers around a wealthy suburban white-majority (usually American) setting, which just doesn't speak to my lived experience as much.
- Researched, sensitive, and honest representation of diverse groups in general, especially regarding disabilities. Disabled and marginalized people should exist in every setting and every community. If they don't, you as an author should be asking yourself why that is.
-Also Miaow Miaow 's eternal winter idea sounds very cool

Less:

RPs with the same boring code

More:

Bad RPs that are fun to read

Most of the interest people have in Harry Potter these days is admittedly driven by nostalgia. The writing itself is bad, though. The story is full of plotholes and the worldbuilding is lazy and lacks research. Plus Harry Potter RP's qualify as school RP's and those are way overdone imo.

I mean there's the obvious magical academy stories that are everywhere. Nothing wrong with them, just think they're overdone

But for someothing I'd love to see more of, is Alternate History. Not even the classic "What if the Nazi's one WW2?" I've recently started on an alternate history WW2 set in a fictionalized version of Europe, with dieselpunk and even fantasy elements thrown in.

(For the sake of my sanity I'm gonna stick to a "top 3" for each)

Need 'Fewer'
  1. Isekai RP's

    - Isekai as a genre and an RP focus had what I consider their "hay day" back in the mid 2010's and have only dropped further and further in their appeal for me as the years have gone on. Getting me to join an Isekai RP today would require the GM to craft an actually original (gasp!) plot and storyline, not to mention the GM themselves would have to have a unique and non-generic or tropey character I could get behind the idea of supporting. These days every Isekai interest check looks and feels exactly like the next.
  2. School Slice Of Life

    - This is largely the same as Isekai RP's. The concept of a school slice of life is kinda fun for anime from time to time. Especially if it's a well-done comedy. If romance is there, it's usually best kept light and fun rather than a central plot point. But otherwise, this concept/genre really is tired and just needs time to remain out of the spotlight for a while so interest can be rekindled later if/when something that's actually unique and intriguing comes along.
  3. 'Angst' RP's

    - The basic definition of 'angst' is "a feeling of deep anxiety or dread." And although I don't mind a bit of angst here and there as a narrative tool, I've seen A LOT of RP's where "angst" seems to be considered a genre all its own, and is the sole focus of the RP itself. Sadly, basically every single RP I've ever lurked on that was "angst" focused (with maybe one exception many years ago) boiled down to the GM not understanding how to use it as a narrative tool and instead just relied on spamming "traumatic event" after traumatic event at the characters and players. Every single one of them eventually died because the other participants picked up on the fact that the GM had no actual plan for a story and got bored with having their characters go through the same crap over and over again just for the sake of "emotional turmoil."

Lesson of the day: If you don't understand angst as a narrative tool and how to best utilize it for helping characters in their journey of development, I advise not trying to use it, or at least don't make it sole reason for your RP's existence.

Need 'More'

  1. Original Idea RP's

    - A lot of the golden age of roleplaying, at least to my memory as someone who started pre-2010, came from original RP ideas that were at best loosely based on the foundational concept(s) of a pre-existing piece of work rather than taking the bulk of the RP's design and plot/story from said work.

For example, I remember an RP I joined in (I think) 2012 that was loosely inspired by Assassin's Creed. The foundational concept of "assassins vs templars" was taken as inspiration, and the GM created a story focused instead on the idea of Samurai vs Mongols in a "what if" scenario where the Samurai were in the position of the assassins as the freedom fighter faction, and the Mongols were in the position of the Templars as the world domination faction. The hidden blade was replaced by the "pocket Katana," which was basically a miniaturized Katana blade hidden either on the thigh beneath a flap of extra padding or armor which could be quick-drawn for clean kills at close range.

That RP lasted about 1 year and reached almost 600 posts before it finally succumbed to the sands of time and life getting in the way. And while I can't remember what it was called, I never forgot the concept.

I'd like to see more of this kind of thing happen where new and original ideas born off the foundational concepts of a piece of work are more common than copy-paste RP's which basically are just new paint jobs with a "create your own character" option attached to them.

  2. Kaiju RP's

    - What? Why are you looking at me like that?... Okay, listen. I know a chibi Godzilla is my avatar. And I know how this looks. But in all seriousness I WISH I saw more Kaiju focused roleplays. It's a niche genre, to be sure. But I love it all the same and I really just wish there were more people out there willing to entertain the idea of Kaiju as a focal point of an RP.

An idea I've had for a long time and tried many times (unsuccessfully) to find interest for was a post-apocalyptic RP where the Kaiju had driven humanity to the brink of extinction with maybe 100-200 people (at max) living in any given major city around the world who now eek out a meager existence in the shadow of these creatures which are now the top of the food chain. A new ecosystem has evolved in their shadow as well providing further dangers to evade/combat.

  3. RP's with deep worldbuilding

    - Call me old fashioned. But I actually like RP's with deeper worldbuilding. Worlds where there's dozens of details about culture, language, tracking the passage of time, agriculture, architecture, politics, the whole shebang. Details like these, while time consuming for the GM to come up with and sometimes difficult for those who join to understand right away, really bring an extra sense of immersion and realism to the world itself which, for someone like me, is like falling into a little slice of heaven. When I know that I can dive into the world and explore all of those elements throughout the journey, I'm gonna stick around for the long haul. I'll be the last one to leave the RP and say "goodbye" to the GM when all's said and done.

I just don't see this anymore, which makes me sad.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I'm a world builder, I love building worlds! The last time I played here many years ago, people seemed to not want to read lots of words for world building. I'm not sure how the site is now, but what it needed for me back then were players that didn't ghost/flake from the RP. I had one RP back in the day that had a massive interest and heaps of characters, but then they all flaked and the story never went anywhere.

So yeah, I want more players that'll stick around (or at least speak up before they leave)

I love world building, too!
Unfortunately I find that even with simple concepts and minimal world building, people still won't read it. In my experience every time I've had an original world with any amount of world building to read in a lore thread (or even the interest check/cs thread) it goes ignored and they make a character that breaks the limitations that I explicitly state in the lore isn't a thing. I put limitations for a reason, I want my game to be decently balanced. I am all for creative freedom but when that freedom is "I know 500 forms of martial arts and have 269 powers" its just not fair to everyone else or myself and it's just not fun.

That's been my issue anyways.

I'd totally join that.

Oh yeah I once had someone try to have their character bring a gun to a mall opening for what was meant to be a kinda... mystery themed RP. He refused to remove it from his character so I just removed him XD Rules are rules y'know?

Oh yeah I'm not afraid to remove players from my rps lol. It's just frustrating and it tends to chase other players away I've noticed. Just can't seem to win here.

Love your username, btw

What roleplay topics/ideas are you tired of seeing constantly?

Vampire, Werewolves, and Zombie Apocalypses:
These have just been done for so long, largely with the same narrative or little direction. It usually feels like, "drop," alright everyone, let's survive and make merry. I don't know, it just gets so boring so fast. I'm sure there are ways to make them interesting and original, but the theme's burnt out on me.

Fandoms:
There are books, movies, shows, anime that I enjoy and love as much as the next person. I am enthusiastic about talking about them and I'll happily have a conversation and share theories, etc. on them. But often I find creating roleplays around them 1. Never takes off or if it does, doesn't survive for long, and 2. gets boring really fast, especially if there's no original ideas brought to it. And this is coming from someone who used to join these and wanted to make a few. Maybe "in the world" of TITLE HERE with original characters can catch my interest from time to time, but that's about it. I'm also against playing canon characters.

Strictly Romance:
I can adore a good romance, but god, it is boring when it is the only "plot" and if it's done hurriedly, or the character seems to change to either be agreeable to their interest when they wouldn't, I'm sitting there like "What? You just met? What!? This isn't realistic." I'm of the opinion that if you have less of something, it gives more to it. If you only have one element, it's stale.
What would you like to see more of?

Original Ideas!
I like seeing original, fleshed out, roleplays. I'm not talking about reading an essay's worth of material in the interest check (admittedly that will drive me away if it's too wordy), but something that isn't done over and over and is original. The GM/creator has a direction they have in mind, whether it's mystery or not. I also enjoy world building, and it's pretty cool when you can build a world with someone. Although that may not be everyone's cup of coffee, it's something I enjoy at the right pacing. Not trying to advertise so I won't mention the name, but there's this roleplay about playing as witches' familiars, the underdogs instead of your big, powerful witch, and that has me floored with excitement. I'm eagerly waiting to read it!

Experiment Roleplays, Mutations!
Not necessarily "boo-hoo, pitiful life, tortured soul" (though amounts of that can be fun to explore) as much as being given something, whether by accident, force, or volunteering for it, and then learning to deal with and evolve with it. I also like science, division, sort of a clash of visionaries. It's not just one guy with the power, but different doctors who think they are the shit.

Monster Hunters
I'm not talking about the game, someone mentioned this, but it would be cool to see humans or hunters that hunted demons and beasts. I haven't seen a lot as most any time the concept is mentioned it's supernatural paradises being threatened by the existence of hunters. Give me something *like* Castlevania where we're magic wielders, humans, half-breeds, something still underdog against the sea of more powerful creatures. Impossible to fend off without the proper training. Still with risk.

I actually had an idea for a RP involving monster hunters and magic myself, but it's a bit more of a niche idea since it's in a historical setting not a lot of people like to RP: the Ottoman Empire.

I want to see less complicated coding, fonts that are either too dark or too bright. Please less of Marvel.

So as a heads up you can use the filter function to both search for specific tags and exclude specific tags when you want to find new roleplays.

So that way you are only seeing the things your actually interested in roleplaying.

Now you might have to get a bit creative because folks don’t always tag super specifically so you might need to try a few variations of what your looking for but it makes the whole process a lot easier.

All that said I don’t have things I want to see less of precisely because I only search the topics I want to play in the first place. Not saying everyone that does those topics is a good fit but that’s a whole different thread.

In general I would love to see more platonic roleplays and Wednesday (Netflix) roleplays. I am not a huge shipper so I’m always on the look out for people who want to play in a fandom or original world without pairing off the characters.

Also I just liked the Wednesday world building and would love to get the chance to expand on that.

See less of? Simple answer from me: none! If people like to roleplay certain topics and it makes them happy, that’s fine by me! No one should be forced to cut down on roleplaying a certain topic just because others deem it “overused.” That’s how I see it anyways.

As for what I’d like to see more of, just more of what makes other players happy!

(Guess I’m just a people pleaser LOL)

Oh I'm gonna get so much flack but I am so tired of modern day greek mythology rps ouside of like, "This is all based off Percy Jackson". I probably still have a sour taste in my mouth from a bad greek myth group I was in but I find that every single one of them just spit up "The story of Hades and Persephone but in modern times" and it's so boring. We get it everyone loves underworld mom and dad. Give me more compelling stories.
