Hi, I am looking for a small group (3 or 4) of dedicated role-players for a long-term story, where we each take turns introducing a villain to the story, AKA your archenemy. We will be playing as a team of heroes known as the Nemesis Protocol, which have been organized by the multinational Global Defense Agency, comprised of direct adversaries to the villains who affiliate with the terrorist organization known as the Authoritarium.

This superhero comic book type universe mostly draws inspirations from the Invincible comics in terms of its colorful and preppy aesthetic, but deviates out of common superhero themes in that the enhanced individuals of this earth have manifested as a result of a technological revolution known as the Quantum Break, which means there is no magic or aliens, just soft sci-fi technology that fed a culture of tightly costumed heroes and villains.

The progenitors of the Quantum Break are of a multinational organization known as the Interama Corporation, a global aerospace, defense, security and advanced technologies company with worldwide interests, specializing in quantum technology. The company used to provide weapons, munitions, technology and vehicles to various military groups around the world, such as the Gendarmerie, the Balkan Battlegroup, the PLA, and the US Army. Once the presence of their quantum technology took its place in commercial markets, other companies around the world had began to theorize and develop new technologies that once were thought to be impossible, such as teleportation devices, nanotechnology in the field of medicine, and unfortunately, new devastating weapons of war.

The Authoritarium is a theocratic terrorist organization of faithful scientists who believe that a higher power they refer to as the "Authority" is manifested in the form of technological advancements - and that governments have dampened its influence, therefore dedicating their resources to acquire and develop power through technological means in order to overthrow the governments of the world. They have been supplying arms and technology to subversive organizations in order to foster a violent technological revolution of society, orchestrating the creation of the nano-enhanced super soldiers, the cybernetic enhancements of various organized crime families, and the creation of special high-tech weapons that spilled into the black market. Soon, "Villains" became a widespread threat all around the world to a point that law enforcement organizations could not properly respond to it, prompting the rise of vigilantism, costumed heroes that soon revolutionized the global culture of response to villainy.

The Global Defense Agency, or GDA, are an international organization created to respond to planet threatening events, and during the rise of vigilantism all around the world, they have created the Guardian profession, offering financial support and villain bounties to those who register with them. During the same period, another profession of generously paid visor designers had become popular. A visor is the costume that guardians wear, quantum-threaded skin tight material that offers the guardians an opportunity to hide their identities and pursue interests outside of their guardian duties.

In this roleplay you can either play as a GDA agent supporting the Nemesis Protocol, or one of the Guardians, visored adventurers who have access to technology that grants them super human abilities and use said abilities to stop high-tech crime and save people. I have a few guardians already drawn, which I will use as examples for the types of characters that you can create. We will play some slice of life to introduce your characters, get them to know each-other as the GDA had summoned them all to work together, and we will take turns diving deeper into their backgrounds as we deal with their archenemies.

Average Guardians
The Black Hats of the GDA
Here are some prompts that can inspire your character creation for this setting:
  • Skilled, and always desired to be a Guardian: You could be a basement dwelling hacker who in the wake of the technological revolution had realized their skill can be used to disarm the criminals that rapidly populate your street, or a prodigy with a blade, a bow, or just a good simple pistol, following your desire to become a guardian for the sake of glory and what you believe to be the heart of justice. You don a visor, but don't necessarily rely on any cybernetic enhancements, though you still could, because why not.
  • Inherited a High-tech Weapon: A parental figure of yours is an engineer who used to work in Interama Corp, who had been working on their own secret project in their lab at home. Though that parental figure had been tragically taken away from you, their lab remains, where you find their secret project, a high-tech weapon which you decide to use to seek out and defeat those who took them away from you. Or, perhaps the parental figure was a guardian, and in the wake of their demise, you pick up their high-tech weapon and choose to adopt their mantle and continue their legacy.
  • Nano-Enhanced Soldier: Though the super-soldier program was discontinued after the war, some of you remain, having changed your identities to live among the citizens in hopes of leading a normal life. But in the wake of the Authoritarium's terror, you decide to come back into action, donning a mask and becoming a guardian to take down the organization that made you possible.
  • Became a guardian, but not by choice: An accident left you on the verge of death, and the only way to save you was to turn you into something new, cybernetic implants, metallic skeleton, or a bio-engineered serum that changed your entire biology. Though you could be lucky and still appear like a normal human, some in the same predicament would not, unable to lead normal lives under their new monstrous appearance. You become indebted to these miraculous changes, feeling responsible to use your new abilities to become a guardian.
  • Insert your ideas here.
Though we will stay away from themes of mysticism or extraterrestrial life (for now at least) there are still people with psionic abilities, abilities to shift into beasts, able to store and exude photonic energy, etc.

Nothing is exactly definitive, but I am just gaging interest. If you're interested, drop a line of what kind of character you'd like to play and the kind of storyline you'd like us to explore together. As the team of writers, we will all get to choose the direction this will go.

I’ll toss my hat here. :3

Edit, yep, already got an idea that involves someone from the Authoritarium having changed sides.

Oooo nice! Definitely interested! Maybe as a nano-enhanced soldier grown in a lab and adopted by a normal family after the war?

Umm. How long ago was the war?
How old do you prefer characters to be?

Oh wow yeah never mind then. I thought this was a long time after the war. Okay give me a second to come up with a new idea

I mean, you can still get creative, there were plenty of mad scientists out there who WOULD have experimented on children. You can still go with an adoption type storyline, would just be good to stay away from the idea of nano-enhanced child soldiers used by governments - there's a lot wrong with that idea that would be best to stay away from haha

I'm shocked that there are only two interest marks for this idea. I'll hope more show up!

But in any event, I think my character pitches all follow the theme of 'some kind of turncoat from the Authoritarium.' For example:

- A weapon (AI construct, cool robot soldier, or Robocop-style memory-wiped cyborg) built by the Authoritarium that changes sides. This could be a Terminator 2 style reprogramming-by-the-notional-good-guys - which introduces storytelling constructs of free will and how the character feels about having that will being abrogated in not one, but at least two, ways. Their Nemesis can come from many places - the organization that created them in the first place is an easy one, but there's probably room for a corkscrewy story involving either cementing, recovering, or acquiring their own Actual Free Will, which would put them at odds with both the Authoritarium and the GDA to different extents.

- The Authoritarium is a theocratic organization, so it might be fun to play into that. This could be someone who's lost their faith, although I find that story less interesting. I think I'd go with someone who still believes in a God of Progress (the Authority, though they might not call it that any longer), but who finds the Authoritarium's worship and actions in service of that god to be Pretty Bad, Actually. A techno-religious reformationist, perhaps. Their Nemesis could be anything from the Authoritarium as a whole, to specific religious leaders within their theocracy, or even someone who defrocked and removed them from the Authoritarium - and is still trying to execute them.

- A gun runner, who puts themselves at a 'profit over all' remove - until they can't any longer. Someone who is notorious to all sides of the conflict, but one day the idea of 'not my circus, not my monkeys' can't hold. They might be double-crossed by the Authoritarium, or made a delivery to a place where they finally can't look away from what the weapons they move around actually do. Their Nemesis could be something along the lines of their former handler or villainous contact, a sort of "This is what you made me complicit in; neither one of us should be able to forgive ourselves" feeling.

Of these, I think the second one has the most of my attention right now - but all three could grow into interesting characters, I think.

Theres like a billion superhero type stories so those who would be interested in this type of story probably already have a roleplay theyre in, so I'm not too worried. I am planning to let this interest check stay for a week or two before finalizing anything, but in the meantime it would be cool to work on characters and plot points during that time.

I actually love all 3 of your ideas, lol. I can see all 3 existing simultaneously within this setting.

I had also considered a splinter group of the authoritarium who still believe in the Authority, but are against the Authoritarium's methods. I was thinking of maybe later in the story of introducing that plot point to assist the team.

Ultimately if you wanted more than one character you could still do all 3 in the future, we would just start as 1 each and slowly world build together and create sort of a wikia to explore all the tiny bits and organizations that our characters might be affiliated with. For now though I'm not sure which option to direct you to, because I like all 3.

Thanks! I wrote them to be a part of your world, so I'm glad you can see room for all of them. :3

I will say that I've no real interest in running more than one character - if I were to start writing now, I'd probably start with Reformationist and see where she wound up. She could be associated with a splinter group, but I'd find her story no less compelling if she didn't know of their existence (for now) and believed she was on her own. As a character study, I'm seeing a scene where she has to maintain cybernetic augmentations (or just prosthetics) that are indelibly marked with the iconography of the Authoritarium's church - a constant reminder of where she's come from, the choice she made to leave, and the things she did before she made that choice.

I got a character idea involving an ai and rather than rather than a high tech weapon, he has an power suit that upgrades over time. Not too different from cyborg from teen titans/justice league.

Yeah that works, it could be a secret splinter that is revealed later, lots of directions we can go with it.
One thing I would comment, your character would be a guardian wearing a visor, while the prosthetics are there to remind her of her past, they would be well hidden from others while she is costumed, at least to support relations in her working with other guardians who may not know her.

Are you thinking an artificial life, like an android, or a human who was turned into half machine - which would fall under the cybernetic enhancements. Either choice is fine, an android A.I. character would yield a lot of cool direction into exploring the place of A.I in this world.

I was leaning towards a machine suit kinda like iron man and have an ai involved. I was thinking about having the character have cybernetic implants that allow them to interact with the ai. I'm not quite sure what I'll do until I really get into making the bio.

For now, the purpose of the suit is to give my character some inhanced abilities. The ai will be more like an assistant that can do hacking abilities for my character.

oh oh gotcha so kind of a battle suit that only your character can operate because of their cybernetic implants that allow them to plug into it.

We're on exactly the same page here. :3 And hey, when she inevitably gets hit hard enough that part of her costume gets blown off, that'll be an interesting capital-R Reveal.

Let me know where if you do! This seems like a fun world, and I'll be happy to write in it.

Excellent! As a potential fellow player I’d love to hear what you’re thinking for a character. :3

Random bit of background on this. This world isn't exactly brand new, it was once meant to be a Mutants and Masterminds settings book, and had a bunch of characters already drawn for it, which I will use in this roleplay to give it some life. All the images I've used so far were made for it, and I suppose will now be repurposed for this group if I manage to organize it :).

I had actually considered at first to organize it on a wikia (fandom) page, where all the players would be able to make all the pages they want and expand on the world that way (which would also become a really easy information hub for anyone new.) Kinda similar to how this MHA group organized theirs. If I wont be able to make RPN its home, I have two more sites Id probably try before opting out to the wikia idea.

Anyway here's a pic of my character roster that are part of this world, who I might either choose one to main, or use them as NPCs as other active Guardians for your characters to interact with. I was thinking of going into a small description on each one of them to inspire what kind of characters you can make, but at the same time I don't want to limit it or make you think an idea is already taken.

I was kind of thinking some one using drones, making several at a time, with different equipment and fighting alongside them.
