Roleplay Type(s)
What the title says. What’s one thing you’ve seen enough of on this site or rarely see at all? It could be a trope, a type of character, a face claim, a rule, etc.

I’ll go first, I exclusively rp in groups and I’m so TIRED of seeing so many high school rps. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean they should stop all together cause they definitely have an audience here; I’ve been in a fair share myself. But there’s a whole world outside of high school! And personally, I don’t wanna keep reliving those four years anyway.

I’d love to see more rps focused on older characters, not grannies but also not fresh faced 15-20 year olds. It seems like it’d be so much fun to write for characters with tons of knowledge and experience.

I second you about high school RP's and young characters being way overdone. In the case of the young characters I think it's mostly because the vast majority of RPers are quite young themselves, thus write what they can relate to most. A lot of young RPers have trouble writing older characters it seems, or they just don't think it's as interesting to write the older folks since they're no longer young and pretty. Idk. Having written quite a few middle aged characters myself I think it can be quite fun.

Something I'd love to see more of that is under-utilized are RP's set in countries besides America, Japan, Korea, or western and central Europe. I've been really into central Asian and middle eastern history and culture recently myself. I think there's so much untapped potential there, even for fantasy based stories that are far removed from the real world settings and all implications around that. The myths and folklore themselves could make for some fascinating storytelling.

Canon x OC pairings are way overdone in fandom roleplays. I have no problem with people asking for canons (or OCs) but it gets annoying when every search seems to be “play this canon for my OC.”

It’s always some kind of romance too and it just starts to feel like everyone is pulling from the same playbook and it gets boring

At least mix it up by offering to do canon x canon / oc x oc OR maybe something platonic.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but I feel like a lot of the time it's just wish fulfillment.

I would say it’s more of a self insertion issue. People want to write a version of themselves into the story as an object of desire.

Now that isn’t intrinsically bad it’s just frustrating from the point of view of someone who just wants to write a story set in a world I like. I resonate with characters too, I just don’t need them be in a romantic relationship with my avatar to do so.

super agree that hs rps are overdone, I will say this is just true in fiction in general. like i started watching Pretty Little Liars for the first time and i really like all the mystery notes it hits but it also focuses on literal children and that takes me out of it oftentimes. Riverdale, Stranger Things, Euphoria, a lot of the most popular things on TV are about high school and even people who aren't in high school want to capture that vibe.

i like college rps as a solution to this, but that might be because I just finished college lol

This is actually why I don't do 1x1's at all. i think different people come into rping with different goals in mind, and i find that it's more likely that people in group rps are there to write a story and explore characters whereas people in 1x1's are very often rping for what is essentially a heightened daydream. Daydreaming about Blorbo from your shows can only get so entertaining, and rping is a great way to get someone else to throw curveballs at you to make it more exciting. it's a fine and noble pursuit, but extremely frustrating when you just wanna write.

i think dice games are in general pretty homogenous. I think i've seen exclusively 5e, Pathfinder, and Avatar Legends, when there's so many other cool systems out there (VtM, Tales from the Loop, Mutants and Masterminds, etc) so i think i'm curious as to why some systems seem extremely popular and others, especially systems that hit on very specific genres, are super underdone when those genre conventions seem like they would lend to very very good text based RPing

Im going to have to agree on highschool role plays. Was highschool ever a blast for anyone? Not for me xD and like it was so long ago I can not relate... Also like its highschool. Its kind of the equivilent of doing a elementary age rp for me. Weird. Just weird.

Also one on ones way way way overdone all across the internet. I just cant understand why people or how people can navigate a story with just one other person or brain.

Im not really into debating my opinions because they are just that. But this is what I notice and feel . Its just mildly annoying not infuriating

I find this interesting as i'm the total opposite. I don't understand how people can navigate story in groups, particulary when half the time people are in different time zones or have different availabilities etc.

for the record, i'm not trying to debate you, I just found it genuinley interesting

This isnt a debate. A debate would start with a...
* grey pupon voice* hmmmm yes I see your point yet alas I feel your point lacks accuracy and this that and the other is why my opinion is right and yours is wrong.

I just cant stand pompus posting when someone is giving an opinion on something
as simple as writing xD

Your response was totally not that. And yeah groups can be a challange to manage fair point :)

Sorry for off topic post * hides*

Overdone:
Damsel in distress (for any gender). Bro you should not force people to rescue your character at every turn, it’s just bad writing

Underdone:
Platonic 1x1s that aren’t parent-child rps. Like, why can’t people just be friends? Why can’t we rp two brothers going on a magnificent quest? How about best friends that don’t end up romantically involved? I have had this happen once, and it was far more satisfying than a romance.

Full plate armour and other late medieval aesthetics in fantasy worlds are overdone imo. Mail is perfectly knightly too.

Aside from the obvious school RPs, I also think supernatural slice of life, Greek/Egyptian Gods, Harry Potter/magical school, and modern superheroes saturate forum RPs (both on and off site) and many of them have since its inception. I don't mind them as much as others do (I'm in a few of those myself), but yeah.

I wish people would draw on more obscure mythology if they're going to add gods/supernatural creatures to an RP. There are so many different cultures out there that we would really benefit from researching and playing in that environment. I would also love a high school reunion RP full of older folk. It feels like a cooler spin on a commonly used plot.

I think genuine horror Roleplays tend to be underdone, for the most part. Especially ones without zombies.

A few tend to pop up around Halloween, but that's about it. A lot of those also seem to be inspired by slasher movies.

I love platonic RP's and do them quite a bit myself. And yes, it's usually close friendships rather than parent-child type stuff.

I agree about underdone platonic! Can't we just all be friends / brothers /sisters / cousins / sworn brothers / etc ? XD

Although tbh, even though you see 'romance' in every other rp seach, it doesn't mean all of these are just about kissing on first date. It can be perfectly platonic until certain point (like, until rp dies out lol), especially in slow-burn romance plots.

I agree about platontic. would love to do one with 2 best mates or siblings.
I'd love to do a parent child one too but everyone always assumes you want incest 🤢

I think it shouldn’t matter what people like to RP or what is done to death. Let people RP even if it is “over done.” So what? As long as people like it and are having fun, that’s good enough for me! :)

Anyways, I’ll go ahead and answer what’s underdone- probably anything platonic. Not really a problem in my opinion but I do notice people tend to not be interested in or looking for platonic RPs.

So anyways, let people enjoy RPing even if you find it “over done.” I personally don’t see anything wrong with it.

Personally I don’t think it’s us saying
“Hey you shouldn’t rp this anymore”
It’s more of a
“I’d like to see less of this because it’s losing its allure”

But I do agree, let people rp what they want even if it’s been done 100,000 times before

people saying this on every thread where people criticize something about RP, is overdone

Even if it's overdone I don't really think 'there should be less of it'. It's just something that you can see often. I enjoy a lot of overdone things too XD

Fluff is actually underdone because it's easy to become boring. But fun in right quantities.

Something that is overdone on the site are these negative opinion threads, but never anything positive. "What do you like about RPing?" things like that.
