Sarah - The bus on Winchester Rd off the 27

Sweat beaded down the face of Sarah Ziegler and she blinked uncomfortably behind her large, almost comical, round sunglasses. She took one delicate hand off the steering wheel of the bus and swiped it across her forehead, using the other to turn the bus narrowly through the remains of a four-car pile up. It was one of those unseasonable heat waves she would read about from like the 1980s, smack dab in the middle of March, as if the Earth itself was trying to imitate the level of Hell they had all found themselves in.

Winchester Road had done Sarah and her hopeful passengers well, especially after the setbacks she had found trying to go North on the 27. There were less abandoned vehicles scattered about and it seemed apparent she was not the first traveler to come this way. The narrow passageways between vehicles seemed almost too miraculous to have occurred naturally and the amount of corpses seemed to imply a couple of gunslingers had swept down the road.

Regardless of their good fortune, Sarah had to temper her optimism, especially after having seen the disasters further down South. She had remembered rumors of Indianapolis burning in the early days and it hardly took even going near the city to see the proof. People had fled the city in droves, creating horrible vehicle pile ups along major highways like the 70. Many of the smaller cities and towns toward the center of Indiana seemed overrun with the dead, leaving one to hope nothing would ever incentivize them to spread out from their graveyards. It was only now that she was coming up toward Fort Wayne that the land seemed relatively calm by comparison.

Sarah had just passed through a small town called Poe. Quaint, but eerily quiet. A total dead zone that reminded her of home. Might have been a good place to settle down, if that had been Sarah’s intention. She was more interested in finding an established community, having spent the last year in isolation and finding it terribly abysmal. Sarah had never spent a day alone before everything ended and now… well, now all her old friends were gone. This little bus venture, the pilgrimage of one lonely girl, had a very clear goal in mind. Everyone on board, the poor stragglers Sarah had picked up along the way, knew this goal clearly.

There had never really been any intention to pick up people along the way. Some abandoned green school bus had just happened to be the one vehicle available to Sarah at the time and she figured it would provide her some level of protection that her old, beaten up VW could not. It happened slowly at first. One person there, another here… Every time, Sarah told each one that she was looking for a community and they all agreed to come along for the ride. It occurred to her in the few weeks she had been driving that she probably already had what she was looking for now, but she simply wanted more.

Now Sarah was the ferryman, bringing people to the land beyond the end of the world.

“Hold up, Sarah,” said Alastair as he leaned forward in the seat behind Sarah to get her attention. She was about to switch over to a side road, so she slowed to a stop to give the man her attention.

When Sarah turned around, she caught Alastair’s gaze in the sunlight. His green eyes seemed to shine and his red hair turned almost a brighter shade. He was older than Sarah but suddenly looked boyish. He was one of the first she had picked up, one of two poor lonely men on the side of the road, who seemed to love his mobile radio as if it was his child.

Alastair was pouring over that radio right now. Sarah was happy he was so on top of it, in case it was the breakthrough they needed. Something in Alastair’s voice made him seem excited and he was practically bouncing in his seat now.

“I picked up something,” he continued, a grin lighting up his face. “They gotta be close. A community called Faith. They gave yesterday’s date too, so it’s not an old broadcast.”

Sarah let out something between a laugh and an exhale of breath. Finally, after so long, was this the community Sarah longed for?

“Oh, my god,” she said, excitedly reaching out to squeeze Alastair’s shoulder. “What should we do?”

“Keep driving,” he said, nodding toward the road ahead. “I missed their directions but I think if you keep going North, we can keep catching the signal.”

“Right!” Sarah gave Alastair another squeeze and turned back to the road. She was no longer tempering her hope.

A community called Faith. It sounded beautiful.

Danny - Taco Bell on Jefferson Blvd

“Why is it seriously so fucking hot today?” Danny asked, a frustrated tone to his voice. He let out a small groan, one hand on his stomach and the other holding him up against the take-out counter. Something about the heat was making the cramped building smell rancid and Danny could absolutely not believe they chose to wait out the next few minutes in a goddamn Taco Bell.

Sean shot him a withering look, which was definitely a step up from Sean’s usual practice of pretending Danny didn’t exist. It didn’t last long though, as the man then turned away to take a peek at the parking lot outside. Danny could see the guy was starting to get antsy, which really meant he could start being an asshole any minute now. Danny could hardly stand the guy. Sean was always so no-nonsense, but in a nonsensical and less-than-endearing way. He just seemed to pick out people to dislike and Danny happened to be one of them as far as he could tell.

Not that Sean was doing anything right now but giving him the cold shoulder. Danny was just feeling restless himself and starting to feel pretty sick. He let out a heavy sigh and made his way for the front entrance.

“Gonna be just as hot out there,” Sean said as Danny was leaving. Danny just ignored him.

Sean was right though, the sun was beating just as harshly outside. Not a single brush of wind for any kind of relief. At least it smelled better.

Danny caught sight of Brooke and Paul coming up from behind Harrison Square with a group of the dead, about fifteen or so, fumbling along behind them. Considering their numbers, it looked like the plan went well. Danny gestured for Sean to leave the restaurant and the pair of them moved to attend Brooke’s little party.

Danny unhooked his hammer from his belt and met the first biter with a furious blow to the head. The creature dropped almost immediately and Danny had to step out of its way. Blood had splattered down his arm and a smell that reminded him of Taco Bell hit his senses.

Brooke and Paul turned and began to get into the fray as well, with Sean following after. Sean had this huge machete that Danny always felt was excessive. Paul and Brooke had knives to combat the dead, able to dance around the creatures with finesse and stab them in just the right spots to dispatch them quickly. To Danny, it felt like these people had been doing this for a lot longer than he had, when really they hadn’t. They had been living behind Faith's walls for almost a year now, only going out occasionally, where Danny had only arrived about four months ago after having spent many months braving this new, fucked up world.

One biter got in close to Danny, performing a quick lunge he hadn’t expected and reaching out with a gnarled hand to grab his shirt. “Ah, fuck!” Danny exclaimed as the creature pulled them together, mouth snapping in anticipation. Danny managed to get his hammer in between him and the monster, his other hand reaching at the back of its head to pull on it. There was not much to grab on to considering the creature was bald. Its cold, lifeless eyes stared into Danny’s as its jaw gnawed at the hammer.

The pair stumbled like drunken lovers for a moment before Brooke stepped in and stabbed the biter in the back of the head. It collapsed lifelessly into Danny and he threw it off him, feeling disgusted. He was gonna smell like shit for a while.

Whenever anyone left Faith, the general rule of practice was to avoid guns. They tended to just attract more of the dead than they disposed of and ammunition was tight enough as it was. Melee combat was always risky though, no matter who you were. All it took was one stray bite for you to get sick and die.

Not everyone agreed with the practice necessarily, but whenever a group left the community’s walls with Brooke or Ray within their ranks, they respected the pair enough to do things their way. At least, for the most part.

Paul let out a relieved sigh once the final biter had fallen. He seemed like a tough guy, with dark eyes and darker hair. He was older and seemed to have had a career as a boxer when he was younger. Danny had been wary of him at first, though the man had turned out to be quite the sweetheart. He had a teenage daughter to take care of and he cared about others a lot. Paul was now giving Brooke a pretty genuine smile when she touched his arm as a sign of asking if he was okay.

Sean gave the all-clear on his condition, as did Danny. Brooke nodded and signaled for them to follow her, back behind the square in the direction she had come from earlier.

Back there was a baseball diamond that once looked pretty beautiful, according to people like Ray. Faith had one of its supply caches hidden under one of the stadium seats. It was a system they had set up for a couple of the areas surrounding the community. If someone was doing a supply run and found the way back to Faith too dangerous, they would drop off their supplies in the meantime. They even had a safe house within the nearby farmer’s market in order to wait for situations to blow over.

A large group of biters had been hanging around the diamond, forcing Brooke and Paul to bait a few to separate. That had been the plan earlier, with Danny and Sean waiting to help them ambush the dead. Now, the remaining biters had wandered over to the other end of the diamond, giving Danny and the others quick access to the supply cache.

“Shit,” Brooke said, having climbed behind the seat to pull out a black box. It was rather uncharacteristic of her, but once Danny saw the box, he let out a swear himself.

The box’s lock was broken and its contents cleaned out. Danny knew there had been medical supplies in there, considering he had been part of the last group who stashed the stuff.

“That’s the second one now,” Sean said, his gaze wandering to look suspiciously around the diamond. “Someone’s messing with us.”

Brooke gripped the box tightly and shut her eyes. She appeared very earnestly devastated. Missing supplies meant a few things, none of them were good. Danny shared her sadness, for this was not the first community he’d been a part of to face such a dilemma. It tended to spell out a troubled future for them all.

“We can’t stand around for long,” Danny reminded Brooke, catching the nearby biters out of the corner of his eye. It took a moment, but eventually Brooke nodded. She put the box back where it was and stood to her feet.

“Ray’s gonna be so disappointed,” she said, before briskly leaving.

Ray - Faith Church Building

“... walk with Christ as you leave today. Take in the sun and know that today is beautiful. You are loved.”

A couple murmurs and whispers of “Amen” followed and those around Ray stood to their feet. Ray stood with them, leaning over the pew to shake hands with Elyse and Ben. There were not many of them here. There usually never was.

“Thank you for coming today,” said Craig, the self-styled priest. He was young for a priest but had an amount of religious faith that Ray could only describe as earnest. He took pride in being a part of a community named after a church, even though most of the residents now were not particularly religious.

Ray himself had not been particularly fond of religious establishments before everything came to an end, much to the chagrin of his late mother. He had always been uncomfortable with it all, whether it was the crowd at Sunday service or just the way the people acted. Recently though, Ray had found comfort in the few services that Craig did. Perhaps the small turnout helped.

Craig met Ray as he was leaving and gave the man a smile. “It’s really great that you show up for these,” Craig said. “Not many care, but those that do are emboldened by the fact that their leader shares their faith.”

There seemed to be some implication there, something accusatory toward Brooke’s usual absence from these services. Ray chose to not let it get to him and gave Craig a comforting squeeze of his arm. It surprised him how tall Craig was and the air of maturity he gave off.

“My pleasure,” Ray said, giving him a nod. He then excused himself and left the building, going out the usual back entrance that led to the parking lot outside.

The sun hit Ray as soon as he stepped outside and he found he had to shield his eyes from it. As Craig had said, the day really was beautiful. He saw Elyse and Ben chatting nearby and gave them a quick wave, though they did not respond to him quite so warmly.

“Do you know what’s happening at the gate?” Ben asked, sounding worried. He gestured over to the front gate next to the security office, where Ray finally noticed a school bus sitting idle. The gate was closing behind it, evidently having just let the vehicle in. Ray had never seen that bus before.

“One second,” he said to the older pair, jogging over toward the scene. He passed a few of the other residents chatting about it, looking just as confused as he was. When he finally reached the bus, a girl was stepping out of it.

“Ray!” came a male voice and Ray looked up to find Derek gesturing at him from the outlook point at the gate.

“What is going on?” Ray called back, an edge of concern in his voice. He turned to find the girl who had gotten off the bus staring at him and giving a polite smile. She couldn’t have been very old. With braids in her hair and sporting red-tinted glasses, the girl looked like she was on some kind of Spring Break trip.

“I’m sorry,” Derek said, having climbed down and was now jogging up to them. He looked apologetic. “The girl said they had been driving for weeks and wanted to stay and I didn’t feel like we could just leave them outside the gates…”

He trailed off as Ray shook his head. Derek was supposed to be head of security, but making that kind of call without telling anyone was quite clearly a boneheaded move. There was no time to really deal with him though, considering this new development.

The girl was still waiting politely, smiling away.

“... What’s your name?” Ray asked.

“Sarah Ziegler,” the girl said, holding out her hand. Ray acquiesced and shook her hand. Once he let go, the girl turned to look at the bus. “We’ve been out there for weeks, just driving. Some of us haven't even bathed in a while. All we wanted was to find a community, and, well…” The girl turned back to Ray with a smile. “When we heard your radio broadcast, we were so… so happy. I’m so happy to be here.”

Ray’s first thought was that the girl at least seemed honest. That they heard the broadcast explained how they knew where to find Faith. Still--

“What is this?” came the sharp tone of Dean Barlow, who was jogging up to the scene himself now. He was the last person Ray would have liked to weigh in on this right now.

“They heard the broadcast,” Ray explained, but Dean did not look any less upset.

“Why the hell did we build these walls if you just let anyone in, huh?”

Ray found that Dean loved to bring up the walls, considering he had been the biggest manpower behind that operation.

“It’s still being discussed,” Ray explained. Dean leaned in to whisper forcefully into Ray’s ear.

“We haven’t seen a soul in a month and then these people show up? Are you out of your mind even considering this?”

When Dean leaned away, Ray had to admit he had a point. Still, he was not inclined to take the cold approach. Sarah looked a bit less happy now, though she was still waiting politely. Ray looked behind her to see a red-headed man standing in the bus’ doorway, looking concerned.

“Dean, can you just give me a minute to think?” Ray finally said, letting out a deep sigh. "Derek, you direct these people to the school. Have Craig and Carmen help you get their names. I'm gonna deal with the bus and then double back to see to them." He held a hand out to Sarah. "Your keys, if you don't mind."

The red-head had gotten off the bus to stand next to Sarah, though she only shrugged at him as she handed Ray what he wanted. Ray then looked to Dean. "Could you get the medical team? We definitely need to look these people over."

Just Ray's luck. Today was supposed to be a beautiful day.

Even when the bus came to a stop, one of its passengers sat firmly inside the bus, slowly stretching and closing his fist. Sam Owens had been on his way for a major return tour when all of this shit went down, and somehow despite everything he had managed to see it through while others more younger and deserved had fallen. He had been surprised seeing a bus coming down the road and picking him up but again there was that nagging feeling at the back of his head.

Why are you still here?

Glancing up from his fist and glancing outside through the window he saw Sara and some people of this little place having a very loud chat. At some point in time Sam thought he would've been the one out there taking charge. With a wince he got up on shaky legs, fixed his mask over his face and made his way towards the exit of the bus. At this point he didn't even remember when he had taken the damn thing off. Not like anyone knew who he was, or cared at this point. Maybe it was just to get a few heads to turn? Sam didn't really have an answer.

Lost in his thoughts he almost bumped into the person standing at the door of the bus. He didn't want to make any waves so he silently stood behind them to wait his turn.

Andrew North yawned and stretched, being careful not to strain his broken arm more than it had already been. He’d been napping somewhat peacefully in the hot summer sun, until the stopping of the bus had woken him.

He looked out the window to see the imposing walls of Faith before the bus. Well, he assumed it was Faith- he didn’t know who else could possibly be building walls around random sections of town. Plus, the church steeple peering over the wall added further evidence to that.

Andrew didn’t particularly like churches anymore. He’d had a few nice experiences with some who allowed him a night’s rest beneath the roof or in the door, but one of his previous foster parents had been excessively religious and excessively cruel, to the point of souring his perception of the whole religion. He supposed that this new church was probably going to be better, but you really never know. Of course, if he’d been well he would never have come. He hoped that they would allow him to leave when he was healed, at least.

He flipped his knife out with his good hand, and ran his polishing rag over it three times before sheathing it again. Everyone had their stress relief- some smoked, some drank, some did drugs, and some polished knives. He didn’t have smokes or booze, and he wouldn’t even consider drugs, so polishing it was.

He didn’t get up though, instead waiting for further info. He wanted to be the last guy out.

Binna Roberts/YMCA Exercise Room > Nurse's Office

Loud, measured steps echoed in the nearby empty room, as a small Korean woman, headphones connected to an old CD player, was in the zone as she ran on one of the many treadmills in the room. Faith, the community she, Doctor Binna Roberts, was a part of was in a lot of ways, lucky. All the major buildings, the church, the theater, the school, and the YMCA were on generators that were only a year or two old before the outbreak. So, because of that, and a few other lucky breaks, the group had access to luxuries that others did not. They still had to conserve, but it was far better than most places outside the walls.

This was something Binna couldn't help but think about as she did her morning rituals. An hour and s half in the gym each morning. This morning, the doctor had awoken early, leaving her boyfriend's room before Dean had even woke up. As she kept her pace, her mind couldn't help but focus on him.

When Binna arrived with her group, Elliot, Danny, and Bella, she had been in a bad place. A few weeks before her partner, Greg, had died by a bite wound from the "Lurkers." It broke Binna. Greg and her had met near the beginning of the outbreak and the two were like peas in a pod. So, when she got to Faith without him, she hadn't been looking for anyone. But then she met Sam. He was a bit of a card. A few years younger than Binna, he'd always flirt with her, and she'd flirt back. He wasn't the normal kind of guy she'd date, but he was hot, and she was lonely. She was tired of sleeping alone. That's never a good reason to get into a relationship, but times were different now.

It was casual at first, but he wanted a committed relationship, and she agreed. They were official for two months now and he was getting serious with her. It was getting clear to her that, while she liked him, she wasn't really in love with him. And to be honest? She couldn't see herself falling in love with him. That being said, she didn't want to be single and alone either. So here she was; trying to outrun her feelings.

After she finished the rest of her workout, she hit the showers. Shockingly empty, Binna showered then changed into her "doctor's uniform" as she called it. It wasn't really a uniform but a blue sun dress with a white lab coat. After that, she put on some light make-up. It made her feel good, even though some people shook their heads. Following that, she put on some rather expensive ruby earrings Danny had found and gave to her once.

A few hours later, Bella, Binna's good friend and right-hand woman, were organizing the supplies they had in the Nurse's room in the school. That's where Binna ran the operation, using the trainer's room in the YMCA for anything serious. The Nursing room was large, all white except a giant painted sun with a smiley face across from the door. Binna adored that sun. He really tied the room together.

The medical supplies were surprisingly well-stock and varied. If needed, the small medical team could try to perform most surgeries. Keyword-- try. So far they had only performed one real surgery; removing a appendix. Still, it had been a success.

Once again, Faith was lucky. The had a lot of supplies, both traditional medicine and more... unusual items. Binna knew that some doctors would have heroin locked in their offices, ready to be used if someone was in pain. You had to do what you had to do in this new world. Still, heroin aside, Binna was ready to marijuana to ease pain, or use cloves and tea bags to clean wounds, or use gun powder to close major wounds. You had to be crafty.

"Okay, Bi, " Bella said, before taking a deep breath and closing a lockbox. Bella was laying on the floor with a notepad, counting the joints they had rolled for the fifth time. "You had to have miscounted. The is only forty-four."

"That's fine. I have a small plant growing in my room. When it's ready, you can always make more?" The doctor smirked as she loomed over Bella, sitting at a desk, pill cutter in hand as she rationed oxytocin.

"Of course I'll roll them, you roll for shit." Bella smirked back. She looked like a cat who had caught a canary.

Binna blushed and let out a snort. "I'm good at a lot of things, Bella, it just so happens rolling joints is not one them."

Bella and Binna were super close. The way they talked to each other, it was like two sisters. Meeting around the start of the outbreak, they both had been through a lot. It was obvious from their bond.

Giggling, Bella put the lockbox in a larger safer, locking it, then taking a seat at the desk. Bella casually played with her hair. "So, question, Bi."

"I probably have an answer," Binna replied, still cutting pills. "Is this about Elliot?"

Bella looked ready to retort, but her face grew red. "Yeah."

"You're going to have to be blunt with him. To be honest."

"Has he ever mentioned me? Danny wouldn't tell me anything."

Binna looked up. "Elliot is not one to bring up girls. Probably not even to Danny, let alone me. I don't think he has the confidence to put himself out there like that. He's used to people looking down on him for being deaf."

Bella leaned back in her chair, frowning. Binna rolled her eyes as the girl proceeded to balance the chair on two legs.

"Yeah, but he has to see how much people love him, right? Like, he's the most popular person. Here!"

The doctor let out a light sound of affirmation but proceeded to go silent for a few moments after, only staring at the pills before her.

"Do you think I should break up with Dean?" Binna asked.

Bella leaned forward, slammed her chair back on all fours, and responded almost immediately. "Yeah."

Binna's jaw practically dropped, caught off guard by Bella's quick response. "What?"

"Yes, I think you should break up with Dean. Unless you're trying to hook up with Elliot. I've claimed him already."

It took a second for Binna to register what Bella has said, but soon she was howling. "Jesus Christ! I'm not into Elliot!" Binna exclaimed. "And you just can't claim men, Bella."

"Well, men have been claiming us for centuries. Time for a revolution if you ask me!" Bella snorted and the two women broke into a giggle fit that echoed around the room.

Taking a deep breath, Binna looked Bella in the eyes. "But really?"

Bella's voice softened. "Look, if you want reassurance, go talk to Father Craig or Sister Carmen, but as your best friend, I can tell your hearts not in it. I believed you when you told me you're over Greg, don't get me wrong, but you're settling. I think. You shacked up with the first guy who showed you the time of day. You don't want to be alone, Binna. That's what it all comes down to. You're not in relationship with a man, you're in a relationship with a dick." A pause. "In more ways than one."

Not responding, Binna kept cutting the pills. She was just about done when she could hear people making noise outside the door. She had too much on her mind to go check and wasn't exactly in the mood for it.

"What's going on, you think?" Bella asked.

"It'll have to wait." Binna responded. "We're almost done here."

Wally Roberts - Outside the bus

As the bus entered Faith, Wally was stressing out. After all this time, he'd never joined a community of people, but there was a first time first everything it seemed.

Following Alastair, Wally was like the red-haired man's shadow as they walked out. Out of everyone on the bus, Alastair and Sarah were the two he was closest with. They were the original three. Sarah was great, and easy on the eyes. She was super cool and handy in a fight. However, Alastair was his guy. They had only known each other for a little over a few months, but both men felt a close kinship. When they met, Wally's gun had jammed as he tried to kill himself as Alastair had watched, horrified. As Alastair talked him down, Wally wept in the man's arm. That's what had happened in the duo's first five minutes of knowing each other. The both were broken though together they were more than the sum of their parts. Behind Wally was a guy in a mask they picked up a while ago. Wally tried to talk to the guy a few times, but he seemed like he wanted to be alone.

Some guy yelled at another guy, than that guy pointed to some woman who was coming up to them. To Wally's shock, she was some kind of nun, and behind her came along a priest, judging by their outfits.

Taking initiative, Wally pushed past Alastair. Looking at the people behind him, Wally mentioned them to follow. Taking a look around as they got in a line towards the school. Wally turned to the masked man and his red-haired friend.

"So, they're not shooting us at the jump. That's a win, right?"

Alastair's normally sad eyes were all bright. Something had changed since arriving here. His back was straight, and he felt for the first time in a while, positive. While shaky at first, he was getting a gut feeling that something good was happening.

"That's an understatement," Alastair said, otherwise at a loss for words.

Sister Carmen - Outside the bus

Sister Carmen silently followed Father Craig after the services. She was wearing a white dress, a blue sweater jacket, along with a long, gold cross neckless, and was topped off with a clear blue veil. It was her homemade uniform. While it wasn't exactly her traditional uniform, it still made clear what, and who, she was.

As quiet as a mouse, Carmen's eyes bulged as she saw the bus coming in. There was knot in her stomach as she realized who let this bus in. It had to be Derek. Very few people knew Carmen's true relationship with Derek. The fact the two were in a romantic relationship would be a surprise to most. As the two made eye contact, Carmen glared at her lover like, well, like a disappointed nun. How could the head of security let that bus in right away? He was so boneheaded! Sometimes he was too much of a big softy.

As she slowly walked past him, she did not look in his direction. She stood listening to that fool Dean try to bark orders. While she would never want to speak ill of any of God's children, Dean was a paranoid, self-centered, insecure moron. Even when he had a point, he could never "sell" it right.

When she and Father Craig had caught up with Ray, the Sister bowed her head to him. "Yes sir."

Motioning to the people on the bus, the Sister stepped forward. A bit theatrical, Carmen gathered the group.

"Greetings, children of God! My name is Sister Carmen de Leon. The man to my right is our wonderful Father Craig, the man to my left is Derek Cook, our capable chief of security." She let out a very slight smile. "Now, we're going to bring you inside to the school, just follow us in single file so we don't lose anyone. All we're going to want to know is your name, age... likely where you've been and you've done." A pause. "You understand, I hope." A bright smile adored the Sister's face.

"We can fully accommodate all of you," Father Craig said, adding to what Carmen said. "We just need a record of everyone so that your integration into Faith is as seamless as possible."

Regardless of Samuel's issues with newcomers, it had been generally decided that no one be turned away from Faith. That was the reason they had set up the broadcast, after all.

Derek was one of the few with an actual firearm and he was casually holding it in front of him as he eyed everyone who walked off the bus. He looked ready to use the rifle at any moment. "You can keep your weapons, but I ask that you pass off any guns to myself before you head into the school."

Carmen noticed a young boy with a bum arm slowly moving off the bus. Sighing, she turned to Father Craig. "I'll get him," she whispered. "I don't mind herding cats." A playful snicker followed.

The Sister walked toward the boy but slowed down to examine him closely. It was strange, a wave of emotions flowed through her as she read the boy's body language.

Carmen could tell this boy was a loner, a survivor. However, one knew their own kind. The Sister's gut was telling her he was alone way before the outbreak. Now standing near the boy, Carmen's normal "Catholic Sister" mask was still on, but her eyes? If the boy was clever, he'd know she was wary.

"Wise decision coming off the bus, young man. Looking for all the exits, I assume?" The Sister looked at his arm as she motioned for him to follow. "Tell me, niño, how long has your arm been like that? And how did it happen?"

Andrew saw the Sister at about the same time she saw him, and as he stepped off the bus he realized she was approaching him specifically. He let her do so, but made sure to maintain a suitable distance out of arm’s reach. If he hadn’t been injured he might not have been so skittish, but a bum arm meant he couldn’t expect to defend himself with any degree of success.

As she spoke, he realized that she wasn’t nearly as unobservant as he might have thought. He didn’t offer a confirmation of her suggestion of why he chose to leave last, but then again, it was hardly needed.

When she asked about his arm, he sniffed disdainfully. Less at her, and more at the evident pity in her voice (which others might call concern).

“A few days now,” he said. “Slipped up running from some undead bastards. It’s fine though, all patched up.” He waved his arm slightly to demonstrate.

Sister Carmen

Sister Carmen's body language slowly shifted. Her original "holier than thou" persona was shed slightly as the sister put her hand on his arm, staring him straight in the eyes. She seemed empathic, but not in a disrespectful away, but as if she had been in the boy's shoes before.

"I'm just gonna take a look," she said. It was at this point, her gut was telling her this was a kid from the foster system. As a former system kid herself, the Sister was as polite as possible when she touched his arm. Watching his face, she was delicate with Andrew.

"Well, it's better to break your arm getting away from the Hollows than getting chomped by one." A morbid smirk adorned the Sister's face. "So you have two options, I can get one of the doctors to patch you up, or I could do it. While I never had a medical license, I served four years overseas in Somalia in a war zone. Patching a broken arm is nothing to me."

Carmen looked around again, worried that people would see the "change" in her. Andrew would see Carmen's "true self" for just a few seconds as she waited for his response.

Andrew flinched slightly when Sister Carmen touched his arm, but forced himself to allow her to look at the injury. It would do him no good to learn later that his arm was too busted-up to be useful again. And it would be humiliating if she started thinking he was some charity case.

After letting her inspect his arm, he stepped away a little and looked at her as she offered to do a better job on his makeshift splint. He still didn’t like her, but he knew she wasn’t lying when she mentioned serving in Somalia. And he did need to make sure his arm was in working order.

“Okay,” he acceded, still looking on edge. “I’ll let you do your magic."

Sister Carmen: outside Faith towards School classrooms.

Follow me."

Carmen could feel the disdain Andrew held for her as the two to walked toward the school, splitting up from Father Craig and the main group. Andrew, if paying attention, could see Derek eye Carmen with worry on his face.

As they went inside, Andrew would see the school was clean, the floor sparking. Not something you saw much these days. Going into a small room, Carmen placed the boy there before departing and coming back with a med kit.

Pulling out a splints some bandages, Carmen tightly, but gently, fixed his arm. "This will take me a bit, so bare with me," she said, her voice firm. "So, as you wait, we're going to do those questions I mentioned to everyone earlier. " It was clear it wasn't really a choice she was giving.

"Now, in fairness, I will answer the same questions I will ask you if you want me to. Easy stuff first-- What's your name, age, where you're from?"

Andrew followed, walking a respectful distance behind Carmen as she led him to a makeshift examination room. It was clean at least, which Andrew definitely admired. His time in the apocalypse had left him a little too dirty for his tastes, even if he tried his best to keep clean. Hopefully his splint wouldn’t prevent him from showering.

He winced slightly as Carmen redid his splint, but didn’t cry out. He hadn’t cried when he broke his arm, and he didn’t plan on crying now. His icy blue eyes remained dry and sharp.

He’d expected some sort of questioning, so he raised no complaint when she asked her questions.

“My name’s Andrew North,” he said. “I’m probably about eighteen, give or take. And I’m not really from anywhere. I got on the bus a few days ago, south of here- in a little podunk town. Don’t remember the name, but it had a big old windmill. Your turn- what’s your name, age and where are you from?"

He fixed a piercing stare on Carmen- not threatening or hostile, but very deliberate.

Ray - By the front gates

After everyone had been ushered off the bus, Ray climbed in to drive it away from the gate. He had only been successful in moving it a few feet before a yell caught his attention. He saw Derek running back toward him, so he slammed on the brakes and shut the bus off.

"Jemma saw something," Derek barked as Ray jumped back out of the bus. Derek gestured to the teenager at the West lookout and Ray looked over toward her. Her signal back was clear. The walking dead was at their gate. Almost thirty of them. Definitely not an insignificant number.

"The bus coming in must have drawn them," Ray said, looking around. He was trying to assess who he had on hand. Brooke was still out on a run, so they couldn't afford to leave a group like that waiting for her. "Grab a few people. I'll warn Craig and join you."

Derek nodded and stormed off, leaving Ray to make the quick jog over to the school. The new group were still crowded at one of the doors. "Listen people," he said between heavy breaths, "don't want you to panic, but you had a group of the dead on your tail."

Sarah let out a small gasp and her hands balled into fists. "I'm so sorry. Please, can I do anything?"

"You can sit tight and stay safe. Our people got this." Ray gave Father Craig a quick nod before running to rejoin Derek at Faith's side entrance. In less than a minute, Derek had already gathered a small crew ready to take on what was waiting outside their gate. Was it enough? He had to hope so. Armed with axes and knives, everyone knew what they had to do. Derek had his rifle strapped to his back, only to be used in an emergency.

Sister Carmen - School class room

Working on Andrew's arm, Carmen was focused on it, but still didn't miss a beat. "Word to the wise, Mr. North, in the future you should know it's common courtesy not to ask a woman her age." Sister Carmen smirked playfully. "I am thirty-five. As for where I'm from? I was born in Spanish Harlem, but I spent most of my childhood in the foster care system 'till I was ten." A slight wave of sadness came over here, before fading. "My biological father found me, and got me out of that..." Carmen paused. "Lord forgive me for the lack of a better word, but It was Hell. A waking nightmare." Carmen was very blunt, her normal rigidness having faded.

Taking a deep breath, she continued. "Long story short? I was in Kansas City with my church family when we joined a military camp. Then I ended up here." Picking her words carefully, Carmen knew this was a touchy subject. "Now, Mr. North. These questions are a little more delicate. A little tougher. Now, how have you made it this far? I was out there, it's rough. The hollows? They're not the real problem. People can be just as dangerous. Have you had any bad encounters?"

Andrew listened in silence, slightly surprised by Carmen’s honesty. He hasn’t met many people who were that open with him, and certainly not many adults either. He was beginning to think he and Carmen were more similar than he’d thought, and that was strangely unsettling to him. Only, she’d had her real father save her, and his real father was probably dead or good as dead. He’d certainly never bothered retrieving his son. As she talked, his expression seemed vaguely perturbed, his eyes a little less piercing and slightly more introspective.

And then came her next question, about how he’d made it out of the apocalypse alive. His face hardened.

“I’m capable of taking care of myself,” he said, a little more harshly than he’d intended.

With his free hand he drew his butterfly knife, and with two flicks of his wrist he had the blade out in a flash of gleaming steel. He let her look briefly, then flicked it back to its closed position and put it away.

“If I had any trouble with people, I certainly wouldn’t be telling you, and it certainly wouldn’t be your business. If I had any incidents, they’d be resolved by now.” He fixed his hard gaze on her again.

“You also didn’t give me your name,” he said.

Sister Carmen

Watching Andrew's knife in motion, Carmen was unmoved. Listening to every word of what the boy said, Carmen softly chuckled.

"Sister Carmen de Leon, and please don't taking my laughter as an insult. You just amuse me."

Letting go of the cast, Carmen's eyes gazed into Andrew's, as if she was reading him. After a short time, she broke the stare. "You know, I knew you were a foster care kid as soon as you arrived, right? I know that sounds silly, but something told me you were. And before you snark back, no, it wasn't God."

Standing up, she loomed over the boy, this wasn't the same sister he met when he got off the bus.

"Look, you're smart," Carmen said. "You know what I'm really asking, and why I'm really asking it." She was not even hiding what she was hinting at now. "Have you killed anyone? If so, how many?"

Wally

"Shit," Wally mumbled as a small herd showed up at the gate. "All hands on deck!" Without really thinking or listening to what the others were saying, Wally pulled out his large machete and made his way toward the group about to confront the shamblers..³

"Wally!" Alastair barked, somewhere between a whisper and a shout. He hurried to follow behind his friend. "Maybe you should let these people handle it."

Andrew nodded slightly at hearing Sister Carmen’s name. He didn’t think he was being amusing. He wouldn’t fuss over it though, he wasn’t really trying to get himself into actual trouble.

“Foster kid”, she called him. It had been more than a year since he’d been in foster care. He’d run away before the apocalypse hit, which was probably why he survived.

And then came the change in Sister Carmen, where she cut the bullshit and asked him if he’d killed anyone. As she looked over him, he cringed back, looking physically ill, cradling his broken arm close to his chest. He didn’t like feeling helpless, especially not when adults were on edge.

“That’s what this is about?” Andrew asked in a strangled voice. “If I’ve killed anyone?” He laughed, but it wasn’t even close to mirthful.

“No, I haven’t killed anyone. But Goddamn it if I wish I had.”

He suddenly remembered something.

“My turn,” he said, trying to regain some semblance of control. “Have you?”

"You got somethin' on ya that an old man could use?" Derek would find the tall frame of Lionheart standing behind him. "I heard what you said about us standin' back but," he cracked his knuckles. "I can't speak for the others, but I feel kind of bad if he lead these creeps to your doorstep. If nothing else, think of it as a welcome present."

Sister Carmen

The conversation between Andrew and Carmen was like two rams butting heads, trying to gain control. She could see his need for dominance, and while she understood, he wasn't getting it today.

Still standing over him, Carmen replied, "five." Her single declarative word deafened the room. It got so quite, you could here a pin drop. "Would you like me to go into details, or is that sufficient?" Carmen asked earnestly.

Andrew laughed after the surprise faded.

“I didn’t know you had it in you,” Andrew said. “That’s sufficient, Sister. I’ll ask you another day.”

He stood up, and made room between him and Sister Carmen.

“Now, is that all, or do you have further questions to ask? Any more poking and prying?”

Sister Carmen

"Of course you didn't. That's the point, Mr. North. Very few people do, and I'd like to keep it that way." A smirk appeared on the woman's face.

Opening the door for the boy, she noticed there more people in the hall than usual. People were rushing about, looking for people to defend the gate. There was a look of panic in the eyes of some. Carmen looked at Andrew, now outside the room. "That's never a good sign. "

Sarah - School Building

The priest, Craig, had shuffled the remaining people from the bus into the school, delicately passing by those rushing out to check on the situation outside. While some of the people she saw looked panicked, there ultimately seemed a sense that everyone knew what they were doing. Sarah had to imagine that Faith knew how to take care of the undead considering how built up they were. She just felt pretty awful that it was her arrival that was causing all of this.

"Andrew?" she said, catching sight of the teenager in one of the school halls. His arm was looking better, presumably thanks to the to the nun with him. No one on the bus had much medical knowledge to have looked at it, though Sarah wasn't sure Andrew would have wanted the help. While they hadn't gotten close enough for her to really know anything beyond his name, Sarah at least cared about his well-being.

"Are you okay?"

"We have a group of the dead at our gate," Craig said, speaking to Carmen. "I'm keeping this group here for now."

"Wally, Sam, and Alastair ran off to help fight," Sarah added, speaking to Andrew.

Ray - Confronting the Herd

"If you want to help, let us take the lead," Ray said to the trio from the bus as they joined the group. One of them particularly did not seem too keen on jumping into the fray. Regardless, Ray wasn't going to turn down the help. He nodded to Lionheart and one of the fighters unhooked a hammer from his belt and handed it to the big man. "Okay, everyone ready?"

Opening the second gate, Ray ushered Derek and the others through. He followed behind, closing the exit behind them. They rushed out on the street that bordered Faith's walls, spotting the walkers that had pooled around the gate. There was enough of them that a full-on assault was too dangerous. He signaled for Derek to do the usual method of grabbing the attention of a few at a time, though realized after a moment that the three from the bus might not understand.

"They're focused on the gate," he said in a low voice. "We draw a few from the herd at a time, going slowly."

Derek took the lead, slamming the walker closest to him in the head. It dropped quickly to the ground, causing a few of the others to turn Derek's way. He quickly backed off so they could break away from the main group. Before too many could be pulled their way, Jemma shouted from her tower, dividing the undead's attention. Ray could just see her silhouette in the distance as she readied an arrow from her bow. Her father had forbid her from leaving Faith's walls, so the girl had made a point of learning how to take walkers out from behind the walls.

Ray held out a hand, signaling for everyone to hold off for just a few seconds, letting the few distracted walkers lumber in their direction.

Andrew startled to hear Sarah, but quickly recognized her.

“Yeah, I’m okay,” he said. “What’s going on?” His mind leapt to the worst case scenario, of a massive horde of shambling dead men and women breaking down the gates and swamping Faith. He would be trapped here. He couldn’t possibly escape with a broken arm and high walls all around.

He didn’t want to die.

Binna

As Binna and Bella finished their work, a large man in his mid sixties suddenly opened the door to their room and burst on in. He was in a panic, both fear and anger radiating from him. "Those idiots!" Dr. Gus Hatch shouted. "Those fucking idiots are going to get us killed! They let a bus of new people in here! Dean just told me! And you know what happened? They were tailed by a herd of choppers! There are fucking choppers at our gates!"

Both women stood up quickly and rushed to a closet in the room. Binna picked up a medical bag, along with her slingshot and arrows, while Bella picked up an axe, along with an old crossbow. The crossbow was Greg's, Binna's old love. Bella had used it before, but she was a terrible shot. Like, shockingly awful.

Binna turned to Hatch. "Are you going stay here and bitch or are you gonna help?" she asked.

"I'm not going out there!" Gus snapped back. "And the fact that you, the "lead" doctor, want to go? You're dumber than you look, Roberts." It was clear there was no love between the two. Bella looked like she was going to charge at the guy before catching herself.

Binna shook her head. "Fine. Just Get everything ready. If we have to cut a hand or a leg off in here and not in the trainer's room, I want to be able to jump right on it." With that, Binna and Bella rushed off.

Running toward the entrance, they saw Sister Carmen and Father Craig, along with a few new people. Most notably was a girl with snazzy sunglasses and a young boy with a broken arm. "What's the situation?" Doctor Roberts asked.

Carmen

A small look of worry came over Carmen as the sister thought about Derek. However, right now was not the time. Putting a reassuring hand on Andrew's shoulder, Carmen began to explain. "Doctor Roberts, there is a small group of empties at the gates. Derek and the others are leading them away." Carmen spoke as a matter of fact.

"And we have new arrivals," Father Craig added. He looked around at the group before focusing back on Binna. "Dean was here. Wanted you to know that he went to check out the gate."

Carmen nodded. "I know you're a rather skilled sniper with that slingshot of yours, Doctor Roberts." She looked down at the woman's slingshot and the small bag of different ammo types at her side, while also taking note of the small quiver of arrows on the woman's back. While traditionally a person using a slingshot would use metal balls or stones, arrows weren't unheard of. Shooting an arrow with a slingshot had its benefits. More control, better at aiming, more force. It was an all-around more dangerous weapon than a traditional bow or crossbow, it just took tremendous skill. Luckily for Binna, Carmen knew she had that and more.

Carmen look at Bella, than at Andrew. "May I suggest that Bella stay with with this group with your medical supplies, while you take Andrew here with you to the watchtower with that crossbow. The new ones have yet to be assessed medically but I have already seen to Mr. North." Carmen seemed to be up to something, but it was subtle. "Crossbow's aren't that difficult, from what I understand. And besides, he just needs a trigger finger. He can hold it with his cast, yes?"

Binna was confused, but the nun had a point. Bella was very well-trained medic, and they needed one on the floor if everything went to hell. Turning to the boy, Binna spoke. "You thinking you can fire a crossbow? The only issue you might have is loading it, but we honestly need all the help we can get."

Andrew shrugged off Sister Carmen’s hand, but nodded.

“Yeah, crossbows shouldn’t be too hard. Never used one before in my life, but it’s just point and shoot, right?”

He was internally relieved to be able to do something, anything. Andrew hated feeling powerless or weak, especially when his life was on the line. He could kill some undead.

It went without saying that Amir was uncomfortable being surrounded by so many people. Though his body was slumped within his seat it was also tense. His gaze was firmly fixed on the window yet he held no interest in the passing scenery. The reflections were what had his attention. To those who glanced his way they would see a young man at ease and completely unaware of his surroundings.

There had been no desire to join a group within him before and his feelings hadn’t changed. Amir had observed groups as he wandered. He’d seen how far and how low humans could fall when the joined together. It was through pure drive and skill that he had managed to escape his own encounters with bigger groups. Before he had spotted the bus Amir had been avoiding a group who had the intentions to “recruit” him. He had seen what they’d done to smaller groups and he wanted no part of it.

His best option had been to leave the area entirely without a single glance back. It was why he had taken the offer. Once they’d get where they were going he had plans on staying for a small time before leaving once again. He’d part ways before any true attachments could be formed. Amir would leave in a way that disturbed nothing around him. If he had it his way, it would be as though he hadn’t been there at all.

The journey hasn’t been long in his opinion but he knew it was because he had only joined the group not too long ago. It was the gate that had Amir sitting up straight now, looking ahead as they were let in. There was no turning back, not for now at least. Hopefully there wouldn’t be any problems with him leaving in the near future. With that thought in mind he left the bus along with the other passengers. His dark eyes took in his surroundings immediately.

He should have felt bad, leaving the members of the community to fend off the herd but he didn’t. Instead he followed the remaining group into the school. He took his place at the back of the group, saying nothing while he observed.

A tall man standing at 7'2 stepped out from the bus and looked around at the place around before looking at the Deadmen (Doc V's term of them) and merely walked to the gate to observe them. he was intruiged to study them should the time ever come to it. one tried to grab him but he had quickly pulled away. with a soft sigh beneath the mask he wore he turned and walked towards the a building. he had hoped to meet someone in this placed called faith.

Doctor V: "Hm...odd." He said in a soft tone. his mask hid his face so no one knew what he looked like the only thing visible was his black hair

Binna

"Pretty much," Binna said to Andrew. "I'll walk you through it when we get there. Follow me."

As the two walked toward the Western watchtower, Andrew would get his first good look of Binna. She was at least double his age, probably. It was perhaps hard to tell. While she seemed older, in a certain light, she could pass for someone in their late twenties. She was also one of the few people around here he could see was wearing make-up. It was light, but noticeable.

Climbing up the stairs, the two arrived. In front of them they saw a girl with a bow taking down a biter with ease. Near here was a young man, mid-twenties, readying a bow of his own. Binna grabbed his attention and began signing with her hands as she spoke to the pair. "Elliot, Jemma! This is Andrew." She looked at the boy. "He's gonna try his hand with the crossbow."

Jemma took her attention away from the herd only long enough to give Binna a quizzical look. "Appreciate the help, I guess." Jemma then signed to Elliot and whatever it was she said, it made the young man nod and descend down the tower. She then turned her attention back to the biters, giving Binna and Andrew room on the tower.

Guiding Andrew to the edge, Binna could see their group was making some progress. A sad smirk crossed her face as she saw Dean below. She pulled out one of her arrows, placing it on the crossbow. She took her time show Andrew how to reload and explained what to do. "You just need to point, take a deep breath, and fire. Don't overthink it."

Pulling out her own arrow, Binna placed it in her slingshot. Taking deep breath, she eyed the herd, looking for the right target. She saw one straying far ahead, and pulled her sling back. "Temple, right side." She called her shot, like she was the great Bambino himself, and let go. The arrow soared through the air before hitting the biter square in the middle of its right temple, just as Binna had said. Binna practically glowed with pride for a moment before quickly muting her emotions.

"I've been doing this for over thirty years. I don't expect you to be me. Just try your best."

Carmen

Watching Andrew and Doctor Roberts leaving, Carmen eyed the new group, taking note of the last stragglers to have arrived. Seeing Amir, it was easy for Sister Carmen to tell within seconds this was another "broken boy." It wasn't a shock or anything new. The Lord knew that this was the state of most people these days. The surviving and suffering that the new world put on to people could easily break them.

The boy seemed athletic, probably from having to survive the apocalypse for so long. He also had a despondent air about him and did not seem to have the same kind of bond with the new people that they had with each other. He had been alone for a long time, from what she guessed.

After a moment, Carmen flashed a shining smile at the young man. "Welcome to Faith, child of of God!" she declared, repeating her earlier greeting. "I wish it was under better circumstances. Still, it's better to with us than out in the horrid wilderness of our current world, isn't that right Mr...?" Sister Carmen trailed off, asking for his name.
