Experiences What's one RP trope/topic that makes you leave without discussion?

Since my post was deleted I'll mention it again, roleplaying animals in everyday life. I guess it's called animal xenofiction. Either way no.

Hmm so that's what it's called I've been calling it feral RP this entire time not sure why. 🤔

Was it...a fetish thing or did they just like pretending to be animals?

Damsel in distress. I did not fill out the powers and skills part of my profile to constantly be saved by your super special awesome character.

UM?? weirdly, our ocs did have puppies together but i don’t think we did any sexual rps. like… from my perspective, i don’t think anything about the rps were inherently sexual, we both just really liked wolves i guess 😭

course, there’s the possibility that he might’ve Tried to initiate sexual conversations around our wolf characters, but since i was ten, i wouldn’t know what the fuck he was talking about, i’d think nothing of it and let it fade to the dark crevices of my mind. i don’t think that was the case though, our rps were innocent outside of violence and mauling each other’s characters from time to time.

Hmm, well I guess that's not that bad, but I suppose it can still be considered weird from a certain standpoint...closest I've come to that was werewolf RP and that was a really long time ago.

i love werewolf rps now… i’m sure there’s a correlation there, but i refuse to acknowledge it. and yeah, it was probably really weird, but i also never Told him that i was a child because i didn’t know that you were supposed to do that back then, so it’s not really on him i guess 😭 unless you just mean the animal aspect, in which case… that too.

Oh no I meant if he knew your age. I mean I don't see a problem with you RPing with someone younger than you as long as you aren't being gross or weird. I personally don't anymore only because kids somehow thought I'd help them undermine their parents by telling me they were grounded and snuck onto roleplay. Like no, go to bed.

Anyway I don't have anything against werewolf role plays just haven't done one in forever...like Sonic, because now Sonic is associated with cringe and I feel people are judging me for still liking it. 😭

I mean honestly even if I was still a kid I'd say no to that. I have said no to that and then you gotta ask the question...why tell people you are on punishment? It would cost you nothing, not to tell people that. I mean how were we gonna know otherwise?

same, plus i don’t want to be partially responsible for some kid putting aside their homework to roleplay… the immaturity isn’t it for me either. not saying all underage writers are immature, but yk 💀

well, i wouldn’t necessarily say i like “werewolf roleplays” — as in, roleplays surrounding lycanthropy or whatever. i just have a couple werewolf characters that i love <3 it’s really fun to explore the different possibilities of lycanthropy.

honestly, who cares if they judge you? if it makes you happy and you wanna write it, go for it — you’re not making anyone else like it, so what’s it gotta do with them? they’ll cope. there are plenty of people who still like sonic, plus it’s super common to have kids shows as comfort shows, since they lack the dark and gritty themes that many adult films and television have nowadays. you shouldn’t have to feel weird or judged for something that’s relatively normal. idk if that helps, i’m sure that’s glaringly obvious, but still.

No cap when I was younger there was a boy who legit dropped out of high school so he could RP more.

I mean I still have a werewolf character, hellhound character too.

I mean I've met some cool role players that were kids, thankfully none of them seem to be active on this site anymore otherwise I'd probably feel bad for them specifically. But yeah I thought about all that, I mean usually the ones I RP'd with seemed pretty responsible like they'd tell me they needed to do their homework or go to bed so they could go to school in the morning sometimes even about religious events that required them not to be online, but I don't know suddenly I started getting an influx of kids telling me the snuck online because they were on punishment and their parents took their phone but they stole it back while they were asleep, that they hadn't slept all night so they were gonna stay up until the bus came and fall asleep in class, that they had been falling asleep in class and I'm like...no.

super off the earlier topic, but when characters have mental illness, specifically an illness that the admin doesn’t have, and the admin says “this character suffers from such and such”

it’s a minor ick, but the phrasing doesn’t sit too well with me. but it’s especially when it comes to things like adhd or autism, or illnesses that are already commonly portrayed badly. i’m not saying that people with such mental illnesses don’t struggle, i know first hand that we very much do at times, but i still feel like the phrasing is so… harsh? inherently negative? contributing to the stigmatisation of mental illnesses, especially the ones under the category of neurodivergence. it just seems like they’re painting these characters like victims instead of… just people whose brains are wired differently. i prefer to just say “so and so has autism”, “so and so was diagnosed with adhd at whatever age” or if they realistically would not have had the chance to be diagnosed, but i know they’re neurodivergent, i’ll say it more like “so and so shows symptoms of borderline personality disorder” and go more in depth about it.

but i fully admit, i’m probably just being sensitive here, i’m sure most people don’t mean anything by it and it probably doesn’t cross their mind. saying that one suffers from something like ptsd or depression isn’t uncommon.

So I have anxiety, I have gone to he doctor for it, thankfully I don't need pills but I do implement the methods to keep it under control. I was offered medication for it because at first I was having panic attacks every couple of days, but thankfully it didn't come to that. That being said I have friends who have mental illnesses, close friend of mine had anxiety and depression and unfortunately from my experience, at least from people I know, not everyone but people with mental illnesses are worst offenders of exaggerating and stigmatizing mental illness, I don't know what it is I don't know if it's self-loathing, coping or whatever, but in my experience, the people I knew for a fact had said mental illnesses were one of the worst ones while portraying it and know them personally I know this is not how theg act and yet they do it in RP.

The Fixer. The person who can't stand for there to be any sort of conflict or evil in the world, just can't accept that sometimes people don't like each other so this person goes around fixing everything and redeeming everyone even when the person is irredeemable.

Did this man literally kill a baby? Well he just lost his way or he was possessed or some other crap.

Do you not like this person because they are an unrepentant arsehole and bullied you as a child, scratch that last week? Oh well you should be the bigger person and make up with them.

tbh this is kinda true as well. it just feels especially nasty to me when it’s someone who doesn’t have the mental illness they’re writing about, i feel like you can really tell when they didn’t do much research. when it comes to people who DO have the mental illness they’re portraying, i’ll usually give them the benefit of the doubt, figuring that they’re writing partially from their own experience, or maybe even just based on thoughts (intrusive or otherwise) that they have. but it’s true that some people, even those with such conditions, can be capable of ill portrayal.

i was more so just talking about the phrasing when describing mental illnesses in roleplay— which, i definitely don’t think it should be sugarcoated either. if someone’s writing about bpd, i don’t just wanna see some manic pixie dream girl — bpd does have detrimental affects on people, i know that of course. i dunno, it’s kinda complicated, i’m not sure my sleep deprived brain has the capacity to go into more detail, but hopefully the gist of it is getting across

So the reason I ask it because I had someone contact me about a similar kink/trope and the way they described it really helped me understand where the romance comes in.

It’s not about real life slavery in the same way that literacy in a roleplay context isn’t about being able to read and write.

It’s basically the damsel in distress phenomena on steroids. The people who like this are into the idea of someone else taking control of their life and taking care of them. They see it as a caretaker relationship just with added humiliation fetishes (usually for the more sexy stories).

Now obviously that is not how real life slavery worked which is why it’s a bit of a problematic trope in romance. Cuz it’s kinda hard to say that white plantation owners were taking care of their black slaves (or whatever other historical context your in) without it coming across as deeply racist.

Which is why I usually ask “Why do they have to be a slave? I am fine with my character just taking care of yours in a damsel type situation. Heck in most of history just plain matrimony would give you the romantic notion without any of the icky racial politics.)
i get what you mean, but if that was the case, then it's still weird that they chose to use that sort of dynamic when they could've said anything else. plus, i doubt this applies to the person i was talking about- least, that's not what i got from their phrasing. they specifically referenced real life slavery for context on the kind of plot they were looking for, such as bringing up time periods and cultures wherein slavery was common, and stated that their character would be a labor slave.

Some people like historical fiction, I actually see a lot of them these days. Is it possible that's what was going on?

girl idk 😭😭 i didn’t interact with them. even if it was, that doesn’t excuse portraying a slave master relationship as romantic.

I didn't say that obviously not I'm just trying to figure out how we got to this point.

You mean you aren't entranced by how the slave owner beats their slaves into submission? How could one not like the romance of being owned and forced to do whatever someone else tells them at the threat of death, beatings, whippings, and much much more?

It's the equivalent of the weird amount of romance novels that have a Nazi romance in them. Like what? Why? Why would you want to romance a literal Nazi?

There is also this really strange subgenre specifically about neo-Nazi men getting into romances with Black women and I am just......... I don't get it man. I am baffled.

Simple answer is probably a fetish thing, if I'm understanding this correctly he wanted to play the slave so he's either a masochist that'sway too into domination or he's one I those dudes with the weird "I'm gonna fuck the racist white woman" things. As for how we got to this point? Some people severely lack self-awareness and are incapable of keeping their kinks to themselves.

Yeah I been seeing that a lot too lately, sorry. I'm half awake at this point and trying not find logic where it doesn't belong. One of these days I'll learn to give up on humanity.

Gender Swap. I think this has been mentioned before to an extent about being able to state your romantic preferences without insulting the others. Well, this one is similar in the vein that you can state your romantic preferences without being gross and creepy.

So the premise of this RP was a romance RP where this girl is best friends with a guy and he is like her perfect ideal partner in every light except for one little problem and since she could never see herself with a man she turns him into a girl and now he has to get used to and accept the fact that she's a girl now against his will and falls in love with his best friend so they can both be lesbians together.

Like who the trickle track? No we aren't friends after this, no friend would do this to me and she didn't even ask if he'd want to date her just assumed the only thing standing in their way just had to be because he's a guy , clearly, clearly it's not because I'm a psycho that swaps people's genders on a whim.

This is the one subject where I will say I see more girls being creepy in, because it's always a female that I see making storylines where the person is forced into something they aren't and it's always like straight to gay or male to female...it needs to stop.

Thank you! Exactly!
