Viewpoint Would You Take the ‘Human’ roll in a human x non-human style pairing or plot?

In 1x1 search threads you will frequently encounter pairings and plots which contain such groupings of a normal human (or equivalent) and a robot, supernatural being, etc… Basically one of the players is taking someone “normal” whereas the other one takes the more weird or exceptional role in the context of the pairing.

Are you someone who would take the former over the later or is indifferent between the two? What do you think you would generally need to be happy taking a “normal person” type of role?

Playing a 'human' character doesn't mean it's not fun compared to non-human one. You don't have to play someone supernatural to make it a cool character. There is always personality, story and character actions involved.

Yes I would take a human role in 'human x something' rp if I like the setting unless for some reason I specifically want the other role. It depends on what kind of ideas I have for the character.

Oh absolutely, not saying anything to the contrary. Any character can be made great with the right execution - but to take that role with so many potential things one could take up, I would suppose there would have to be some appeal in the idea itself, before there is an RP and fully fleshed out characters, at the interest check stage.

I actually think the human is usually the “audience insert” character more so then whatever supernatural creature is being used.

As a lot of times the human is the one who is discovering this new world for the first time and thus the person in a position to have the most character growth.

The only time I insist on a supernatural character is when it’s clear my partner isn’t up to world building and me having the character with the more setting specific knowledge makes sense.

I can take either role so as long as I have enough room to make whichever character my own. I think that's the real important part. Making the character whatever I want them to be regardless of whether they are human or something else. You can make any character extraordinary when it comes down to it.

It depends on whether or not I'm actually allowed to do anything interesting with my character or if I am expected to basically just sit back and watch in awe at how super special amazing the other person is and essentially just be a damsel in distress. If that be the case then hell no, in fact, I'm not playing period because I also don't like roleplaying with people who have no agency and are basically just along for the ride to the point where it seems like I'm roleplaying with myself either.

However, if it's not the case then sure.

Exactly.

Before taking up a roleplay I always answer 2 questions:
1. Is the idea appealing enough for me to commit to the rp? If yes,
2. What kind of character do I want to play within this idea?
If I can answer those two questions clearly then I already know what I would play, and in this case the role may or may not matter.

For example, if I have a lot of ideas for my character being a banshee and not so many ideas for my character being a human I probably would ask to play the banshee. If I have a lot of ideas for my character being a human and not so many ideas for the banshee, I will likely pick human.

For me, this depends more on the ideas for the RP itself and the RPing ability of my partner, more than the actual pairing. I’ve RPed as both human dealing with non-human beings, and a non-human being dealing with humans. I’ve had tremendous fun with both.

RPing as a non-human can be boring if the person RPing the human doesn’t react believably to the non-human traits. I played a god in an RP once, where some of the players wouldn't respond to his tendency to throw fireballs when he got angry. This made interactions with this player really boring. Whereas another player handled this same situation wonderfully, and we had an awesome character arc with both characters.

I‘m doing an RP at the moment where my partner handles all the non-humans, and I play the humans. Even though my character can’t do magic like the non-human, and isn’t even a good fighter compared to other humans, I’m totally happy with the setup we have because my character can still play an important role in the plot.

If there's a dragon, I want to be the dragon, because dragons are rad.

But aside from that I'm an either-or person and it will depend on the story. I play a lot of humans in Fantasy RPs so I'm alright with being the human.

yeah to be honest I find a lot of times the “less desirable” character in a pairing reveals more about the requester then the requestee.

As RPN is diverse enough you will find a partner who is willing to play literally any character you need.

Like when it comes to canon x oc roleplays, I’m totally fine playing a Canon for someone else without needing reciprocation. Cuz I just plain think canons are fun.

I’m happy to play a love interest without needing reciprocation in the exact same way. Whether that means playing a male to someone’s female or a human to someone’s vampire.

I think it’s really interesting to see how people interpret supernatural beings honestly. Especially if those interpretations are different go my own,

I'm not sure I understood what you were getting at with this. Could you elaborate? Why does it say more about the requester than the requestee?

Because it is usually put in the frame of “This one role is less desirable then the one I want to play. So I’m going to foist it off on someone else.”

You see it all the time when people try to bargain with doubling or seem surprised that someone would choose a particular role.

Heck this very thread kind of hinges a little on the premise that taking the human role in a human x supernatural roleplay is undesirable.

You specifically asked “what might be needed to make you happy with X role”. When the simple answer is that being a human doesn’t need to be justified. There are people who don’t care or who are happy to do it.

Yet the way you phrased the question (the way a lot of people phrase similar questions) makes it clear the human role isn’t as interesting for you.

Ah I see what you mean now. Thanks for clarifying!

No, because I'm not really a fan of human x non-human romantic pairings of any kind.

Just to clarify, while I did not exclude romantic pairings I wasn't implying them either.
From my experiences most people looking for that type of pairing are looking for romance. People seem to like their supernatural romance.

Sure, not saying that's true or not, just that it wasn't my question.
You asked if we were willing to play human x non-human pairings and I gave my answer.

I have no issue playing the human in pairings like this. But... the idea has to be interesting to me. For starters, just listing the pairing (like I see in so many reqs) does nothing for me. When I just see a slew of vague pairing like Pirate x Princess, or Monster x Human, etc. I don't even bother looking them over and just back up to the main menu.

That aside, the setting itself would have to fall into something I actually want to roleplay in. Robot? Sure, that has a possibility in some kinda space opera setting. Supernatural being? Nah. Not my bag. Someone mentioned dragon earlier. Concerning Dragons, I hate them being this badass, demi-god like creature with a mind equal or greater to humans. So in a pairing like that, I'd rather the dragon character be a bit more bestial than sentient. Probably not as fun for the other person to play the dragon like that... but that would be the way I'd be interested (poor example, but someone said dragons. lol)

I guess what I mean to say is that, like any other RP thing I look into, it just boils down to me liking what I read as far as the encompassing genre and setting. I have a handful of human characters in my archives, so I'm not adverse to using them, even in a scenario where the other character is not human.

Oh wow, I might just be in the minority with this.

Non-human all the way 😂

Okay so I'm not saying humans can't be interesting. I have a human character and I love them just as much as the next.

But the operative word here is "one", lol.

Listen, I just... I need my weird. Ever since I was a tiny thing, I've had a fascination with inhuman creatures. I grew up with stuff like Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Starcraft. Yes, I'd rampage about, pretending to be a werewolf or a Zergling, and I'd do so shamelessly, thank you very much.

RPing as something other than human really lets me get outside my own body... And I adore the freedom that comes with it.

Boom! You're an alien from a totalitarian planet who was born in a pod and served through your entire life with loyalty.

Zap! You're a sadistic demon from the 10th level of Hell and your only goal in life is to see others suffer more than you.

Pow. You're a FUNGUS. No context needed.

Yeah, a lot of stuff can happen with humans. But the strangeness of a different body just adds all new spice and possibilities. Oddly enough, it makes it easier for me to get into their minds.

Some of it is laziness, too. Most of the time, playing as a creature takes away the immediate need to find the real-world locations they hail from, what their heritage may be, who their parents used to be (let's be real, you know they're dead), and all that nonsense.

Sure, that stuff can be important later on, but... man I just want to develop my cool ideas as they are. I don't want to go hunting for information i don't explicitly need right off the bat. Let me vibe 😩

Sometimes I just wanna play a woman who is slowly transforming into a mindless draconic beast who only hungers for human flesh. Does all that other stuff about her human life matter?
Maybe at some point, but not now, leave me to my limb-rending.

So I don't think I consciously avoid human characters. I'm not afraid to play ball if I'm in a situation that calls for it.

But if there is ever a choice to play something inhuman... Sorry mate, I'm bolting for it full-speed.
