What about playing video games? Would you deny yourself playing an online video game in case some players happened to be under the age of 16 or 18 or 21 or whatever number you decide represents your 'comfort zone'? If not, what's the difference? To me, this method of thinking represents a type of arbitrary gatekeeping that makes me uncomfortable. Hypocritical, I believe, is the right word.

If I really get right down to brass tacks, I'd much rather a kid be exercising their creative writing skills in a place such as this instead of spending all their time fragging in Call of Duty or twerking on TikTok.

I mean if the kid comes online talking about they're grounded and sneaking onto the game then yes I would not play with them because as I said I'm not about to be used to undermine someone's parents or punishment and I feel weird as a stranger telling some random kid "Hey you're grounded you should get off the computer/PlayStation"

Not that I go online to play with anyone these days, but if I did I would definitely not play with anyone younger than 18. No offense to the younger crowd. I mean why would I want to when I am perfectly capable of finding people in my own age range? Just because someone doesn't want to write with minor does not mean how they feel about it, their comfort zone if you will, should be invalidated. That is their right. What if a minor doesn't want to write with anyone over 18? What then? We all have our comfort zones that we are entitled to have.

The hatred some people seem to have against "auto-hitting" is starting to get on my nerves a bit.

I get why people might take offense at, say, breaking another character's arm without permission but I don't really get why people always make such a fuss about their character taking a punch or two.

Having to go back and forth on every potential hit a character might take just brings every action scene to a snail's pace, and I don't really see what you gain in return.

Yes, I admit that that one situation is different, and is totally a judgement call that I can respect and get behind.

I suppose that I stopped talking about that one situation and transitioned into talking about the one paradigm that I see ALL OVER the site that kind of grinds my gears. It goes something like this:

"Hello, I'm a 21+ year old so and so who blah blah blah...
...I won't RP with anyone under the age of 18 because I don't feel like it."

Every time I laugh bitterly because it drives me wild that people think that the gulf of perception is so vast between teenagers and young adults. I mean, christ, it can't be that long ago for anyone here. If you're over the age of 25, really think about if the motivations, goals, wants and dreams of 16 year old you was closer to 20 year old you or to 12 year old you.

This is a what drives you crazy thread, and that's a big one for me. People overestimating their own maturity and intelligence I think is what it is. Things are so much smoother when you strive to stay humble.

I think it's a stigma at this point, I think auto-hit is just associated with griefing at this point, like auto-kills and controlling another person's character.

In my experience as a browser of many RPs I never join, it probably means they had something *similar* in mind but not quite on the money -- for instance, people who like historical RPs may browse all historical RPs, even though what they're actually looking for may be as specific as 'only set in Victorian England'

Some people really forget that roleplay is supposed to be collaborative. Like, it’s supposed to be equally fun for both parties . If you want to control everything that happens and decide which characters your partners write, maybe you should be writing fanfic instead.

Things I've actually had people basically say to me during an RP.

"You should play a female instead. It'll work better for the plot I have."

"I don't think that is what Callhan would do. He should . . . . "

"You're characters keep ruining *my* story!"

That sounds tough. Though I can't say I "avoid it at all costs" I also hate writing sheets, they're a mood killer for me. So I can sympathize with what you said.

You know this brings me to another thing CS, I don't really like them, why? Because I have a lot of ideas for my characters and writing it all down on a profile is a chore. I mean I will if it's that important to my partner, but wouldn't be more fun to save these details for the RP? I know some people claim this is lazy, but I am quite frankly just better at show than tell...plus if you don't know every detail of my character beforehand or prevents people from inserting themselves into my character's backstory and coming up with abilities beforehand specifically just to combat my character if they have to figure it out as the story unfolds.

Exactly this! Plus, I often get the best ideas for mc's backstory a few posts in, so I retroactively edit these things often in my head. I'm not even ashamed.

This, like I hate making premade bio's because too often have I come up with much better more compelling ideas and know I either have to sneak in or shamefully ask for a retcon.

I hate when they are required. I've had several people over the years more make demands about them. I would rather just play my character out over the story.

So it’s not a particularly in-depth process and is usually what people would do anyway when pitching the character concept. Just a bit more organized (I am hyper organized in roleplays so it helps me feel less anxiety to have all information in one place),

To be honest I can understand the need for a CS is group RP as it's like you said a check to make sure everyone understands the world and also a check to make sure that no one is trying to pull a fast one and cheat the system.

I have seen people try and cheat the system in a 1x1. XD LOL I don't know why they thought that was a good idea. That was a couple years ago on a Pokémon RP. Even when we did have character sheets, they used a background info that was seemingly insignificant that I overlooked in the RP and it was practically OP. XD so whoops XD that was both my bad for not picking up on it and their bad for trying to one up in the RP.

Honestly I don't get why people think it's so important to always win inn an RP like sure it's cool to try pout your combat ideas and have them pay off but to the point where you feel like you need to cheat? It's like when people rage quit in player matches, I mean it's not ranked and it doesn't go on your record so what exactly do you have to lose or gain from doing this?

It's not that it's important but more that they need something to make them feel good. For some, it's an urge like you would get in a competitive match. Your emotions gets tied into it and the person acts like a jerk because they are trying to win and doing what they can. XD "nice people don't win" apparently. Other times, they are in a rough spot and want to feel in control of the situation because they don't have that in their life. Why they don't make fanfics instead besides the reason "spontaneity and randomness and more ideas" is beyond me.

Some people find it important because it's a good escape for them. But other than that, I can't give any other reason as to why others would do it, who don't fit these reasons I mentioned.

It could also be entitlement XD lol but yea know.
