H'llo everyone.
I'm having a bit of a dilemma that I'm wondering about, so I thought I'd mention it to hopefully get some inspiration from you guys.
I am desperate to play one of my characters (not RP'd with him in several months), but I'm not sure whether to just go straight Terran or to have him be another race with a humanoid appearance but perhaps some differences in the physical or mental. For example, I was thinking Betazoids from Star Trek; my character isn't physically fit at all, so having his mind enhance what he can do with weaponry seemed like a good idea.
A rundown of Betazoids are that they are empaths to a telepathic degree, and in an RP sometimes that kind of power isn't the best, so I'm certainly not married to that.
In previous incarnations of him, he has been a bit more resistant to physical pain and mental stress, so he has made a good juggernaut or tank when paired with heavier armour.

Any thoughts? I'd love to hear what you guys think!

Sounds like a good choice, it seems reasonable to make up a bit of backstory and fluff pertaining to your character's original species to flesh things out, but Terran is probably fine too.

It makes sense to have a skilled combatant on what is basically a hunting trip, and a character that experiences strong empathy can develop interestingly.

I often like it when a character's "powers" end up being more of a flaw than a boon. So I'm thinking a massive flaw of this betazoid-esque race being information overload, or overstimulation. It would make sense for them not to be able to interpret each others' psionics, since alongside a "power" like this must come defenses. So imagine someone going from a culture where they can occasionally interpret simple psionics of animals, non-betazoids, and etc, and then thrown into a world that is not betazoid-heavy.
Super overstimulating.
Could lead to the character looking for something to stop their "powers" by default, which could be interesting.

BuggaBoo BuggaBoo Looks good! Go ahead and drop it in the CS thread.

0stinato 0stinato That’s a pretty interesting concept. I’d love to see what you turn it into.

(Originally put this in the interest check because I'm braindead so reposting here.)

The Crimson King The Crimson King
Here's something I've come up with. It's definitely veered away from Betazoids quite substantially. Do let me know what you think! I am more than happy to chat about any changes you'd want to see.

Zirzolans
Zirzola is a small, arid planet whose soil isn’t suited for large-scale arable farming. This situation facilitated the evolution of the humanoid species known as the Zirzolans (or Zirzol). They are functionally carnivorous, due to their need for pastoral farms due to the planet’s form and are also noticeably larger than Terrans by about 5%. This size difference has been theorised to have improved survival through both athleticism and water retention on a dry planet. (Moxie et al.) Zirzolans also have the ability to process blood, and seem unaffected by prions (Zaggeb and Phil), which explains the numerous records of cannibalism among Zirzolans at times of famine and desperation. When this finding was released into the scientific sphere, it resulted in some negative connotations, and resulted in Zirzolans being referred to negatively as ‘Zampires.’

Zirzolans began to develop brain functions to ‘catch and interpret projective psionic activity’ (D’ran et al.), allowing the Zirzolans to understand strong, simple projective thought of their farm animals. Farming would become much easier, since a Zirzolan farmer would instantly know what their animals needed, and which ones might be unwell.

In addition, Zirzolan brains develop in childhood to project their own psionic activities to a much lesser extent, meaning, from the age of about 4-5 and onwards, a Zirzolan cannot ‘catch and interpret’ the psionic activities of another Zirzolan. This also appears to be a method of species survival, as a parent Zirzolan can instantly understand the needs of their infant through their psionic interpretation.

Most other species project psionic activity, and so a Zirzolan can interpret simple, strong feelings or apprehensions as they would with their own young, or animals. This has assisted in rocketing Zirzola into the socio-political eye of the galaxy, and many Zirzolans have used their psionic interpretations to become skilled interrogators, lethal combatants and charismatic leaders. However, the downside of being surrounded by other species is, according to many Zirzolans, having to withstand a near-constant cacophony of psionic noise which cannot be ignored. It is not uncommon for an off-planet Zirzolan to seek out certain narcotics which dull their sensitivity to psionic projection.

One other oddity of the Zirzolan species is that they are an intersex species. Moxie et al. furthered their survival theory with a footnote that their intersex nature assists in breeding, as all partners in a relationship could become pregnant together. Notably, asexual reproduction (breeding with oneself) has never been successful.

An observation that I think is quite amusing is that “Weiss” and Calli together are only just heavier than my Lull. By about 6lbs.

Goodness, it's going to be an interesting crew.

The archetypes are more like loose guidelines than something you need to abide to; they were made for this exact instance, when you aren’t sure which way is up. Take your time, you’ll figure something out in one way or another.

I am still 100% absolutely clueless.
I am drinking vodka right now though.

Hi, sorry again for the lengthy wait time to actually get things started. Feel free to discuss your characters or possible plot opportunities here, or just miscellaneous banter, I don’t mind.
I'd love to discuss characters, plot opportunities or whatever with you lot, so do let me know!
One thing I was thinking about, relating to my character and potentially Nellancholy Nellancholy 's as well: droids/drones/cyborgs vs Zirzolan's psionic interpretation? Would they produce psionic projection, or something similar? Any thoughts?

Of course! I'd love to get a little in-universe ideas chat going, and learn more about everyone's characters (from an OOC perspective at least, since I don't believe any of our characters know each other).

On that subject though, perhaps our characters have maybe heard of each other's accomplishments or whatnot. That's down to GM discretion of course, but certainly Weiss has a lot of scientific credibility going for her, so maybe some characters who follow that know of her.
As for my Lull, he's a big ol criminal, so maybe his exploits have been on the spews (space news) before.

Certainly the identity of Dr. Weiss would be fairly well known, but probably mainly to those who run in academic xenobiology or explorer circles. The kind of name you see on a lot of journals, but not the ones on the space news presenting groundbreaking discoveries.

A particularly sensitive psychic might notice that her signature is rather muted, mechanical even. But someone actively trying to shut things out might not.

That gives a lot of different platforms for RP I feel, very nice. Certainly, Lull wouldn't notice anything for a long time probably, since he is, as you say, trying to block things out. But, in combat, he allows those psionics in, since they assist him greatly; perhaps something might show up there, dependant upon what Weiss was doing at that time.

Very interesting stuff.

Hmm, maybe psionics in this universe are some kind of Prim molecular wavelength, so obviously inorganics are off the grid. Entities of pure science and reasoning. I think the most they might do is affect the particles around them if they have simulated emotions, so they might create something that seems like a psionic signature but is superficial, giving a very two-dimensional impression.

Also, I don’t see why characters can’t have heard of each other, I just wanted an emphasis on them never having met one another personally. One might know of Dr. Weiss, but likely have never actually met them, and if Lull is part of that crazy rehab system, those on the crew will likely know about said system beforehand and that it will be put into effect on this expedition.

I was wondering how Prim would factor into psionic interpretation, so it's interesting to hear this. It'd be very fun if there is something to read, but that something just isn't 'right.' Honestly, the RP potential with the psionics, of seeing the weaving of the other characters' minds, that's what I'm looking forward to the most right now! It'll be so fun to see what a faemiliar brain prioritises as a strong emotion, for example, in comparison to Lull's experiences with other species. I doubt he's ever met a faemiliar before.

And yeah you make a good point: if you have a crewmate with some pretty colourful criminal background, it'd probably be for the best to make that very clear to the rest of the crew. But don't worry, I'm sure he has very strict standards to live up to with parole...

Did you read over the first post? I don’t feel as though you’ve grasped the tone; Katarina feels like she was made for another roleplay. There isn’t a Spetsnaz anymore, for starters, and you left a lot of your form unfinished.

I know it sounds like a foreign concept, but the entire system is united under The Oligarchy, any remnants of original governments have been dissolved or put into the background in favor of the Council’s rule.
