The 2004 Shuttle Incident

17 years ago, on what was initially a routine Space Shuttle mission, an unidentified object fused with the hull of the Shuttle while it was in orbit. Unnoticed until well after atmospheric reentry, NASA command center at the Johnson Space Center would attempt to warn the crew of the stowaway, to no avail. By the time NASA had detected it, communications on board the shuttle had been jammed, as well as the manual controls that the crew could use to ditch the craft in an emergency. With the controls of the ship being manipulated by the strange object, it began to steer away from the intended landing zone in the Gulf of Mexico, towards the location of the signals that were being sent towards the ship- the Johnson Space Center, only a few miles south of downtown Houston. As it approached nearer and nearer, the craft began to let out a high pitched tone that grew louder and louder before it finally exploded in an enormously bright ball of light, blinding anybody nearby that was looking at it and bathing the entire city, and many of the surrounding small towns, in an enormous amount of an undiscovered type of radiation that would eventually be dubbed by scientists as "exotic radiation".

Map detailing the range and levels of intensity of the exotic radiation within the city of Houston and surrounding towns.

This radiation took hold almost entirely within very young children and infants, from newborns to, at the oldest, 5 and 6 year olds. As those children became teenagers, their bodies developed strange powers and quirks, many of which were seen as either highly useful or highly dangerous to the government, who established a research institute and school on the location of the former Johnson Space Center, for those who had absorbed exotic radiation and exhibited some form of powers. These individuals had come to be known, both by the government and society at large, as Metas, and they inhabited an uncomfortable world where everybody seemed to have an opinion on their existence. But at the Houston Institute for Meta Individuals, they're safe... from the outside world, that is.

Superpowered school RP with elements of government conspiracy and alien technology. Age range for characters is 17-23, as that is the age of those who were old enough to be affected by the radiation disaster and young enough to have been able to absorb it at the time. Looking for people to play various meta students of varying levels of power. I'll be playing the government agents and teachers- basically, the NPCs. Reply if interested, I might or might not make an OOC discord.

I don't know what made me click on this topic quicker: the fact that it's based around the City of Houston or it is about metahumans?

Several years ago, I participated in a superhero storyline that took place in an expy of Houston that I called Mirabeau City which was a reference to Mirabeau B Lamar.

I have a number of characters that can fit right into this type of storyline and others that can fit with some tweaking.

I've been role playing for nearly 20 years, but off and on, until I found RP Nation. It also has been awhile since I've participated in a group storyline.

Interested in what you have in mind.

Nice. I was thinking it would start off as a fairly simple one with the various characters interacting in the metahuman university, and over time more about the institution is revealed, metas recruited into shady government organizations, attempts to understand both the alien tech and event of 2004, etc.

Essentialy, I'm wanting it to be an "unfolding" storyline. As for the Mirabeau City characters, sounds like a perfect fit.

Ooh, I’m definitely interested! Let me know what type of superpowers you’re looking for.

Heh, nice. Any and all superpowers, of various power levels all welcome. Just as long as they aren't the insanely OP Galactus/Darkseid type where they can tank every other character combined.

Alright, thanks! I'm thinking two characters/powers right now, one that was basically directly under or very extremely close to the blast, whose power is basically that they can channel smaller versions of the actual blast; and another who isn't actually from Houston, but was there on vacation or for a family reunion or something, and was out playing in one of the park/forest areas during the blast, who can control nature and wildlife.

A spotlight on three of the characters on my short list. I am focused on playing as just one of them.

1. A Hispanic male who can shift into what appears to be a plain cat. He can appear fully human, except for his human eyes which have slit pupils, but only for up to 16 hours. Once he reaches that mark, he starts to revert to a form that is half human/half cat. He can try to hold it for a minute or two past that mark, but it's uncomfortable trying to hold it in. However, he can appear in cat form for as long as he wants. His eyes remain the same no matter what form he's in. In the years before his ability presented itself, he was on his school's track team. He comes from a large family of tailors who also own a cleaners and a shoe repair store. All within the same strip center which they own.

2. A biracial Japanese/Hispanic male whose power is ice/cold based. His Asian father is a former Marine and police lieutenant while his mother is a professor of archeology and anthropology. He had a normal human tolerance for heat, but outpaces human comfort when it comes to the cold. For example, he can vacation in Alaska in the middle of winter and wear a tee and shorts. He'll be just fine. He prefers to keep his room just warm enough to make use of water which annoys many.

3. A young man who can voluntarily shift into a humanoid jaguar and back again. His father is an agent of the FBI and his mother is a veterinarian. In his prior life, he was on both his school's wrestling team and swim team.

These are pretty interesting, only issue is that I'm not sure how having two "human transforms into feline" characters with powers that are so similar would work.

Is magic a thing in this universe? Got a backup plan if it's not, but just want to know.
No, but you can do some pretty fantastical things and for the most part just handwave it as the exotic radiation.

I understand which is why I was considering just one character to be for the storyline. I am pretty much settled on being Javier, the guy who can look like a regular, because he's more developed. Plus, I can imagine him in a setting such as this much better.

Okay, then I think I'll go with the telekinetic. She'll pick up telepathy and astral projection later in the RP, but for now, she's limited.

What type of faceclaims can we use? (Anime or Realistic)
As far as faceclaims go, I don't really care very much either way. Whichever you find closest matches the look you're going for.

Could you give an example?
Like, making a puppet clone you can control, or shapeshifting, or controlling the elements. Stuff you can do with magic- just don't call it magic, or say it's from some magical book or wizard or whatever, and it becomes a superpower.

What about summoning Zodiacs? I had this idea that could be played out in different ways depending of which one would be allowed

Core Idea: Summoning Zodiac themed entities (Which probably is too much, so i made variations)

Variation 1: She doesn't summon but actually transforms (Shape-shifts/Mutates into a Zodiac Themed being/alien), her own astrological sign is free to use whenever but other zodiacs can only be unlocked by touching someone born with the Zodiac sign.

Variation 2: Since we are allowed to make multiple characters, then mine would follow a Zodiac thematic, maybe is an specific mutation that causes this or maybe just the way they like to identify themselves a group (I would not make 12 characters, of course xD)

Is any of these viable here?

Well, I'm not as sure about Zodiac stuff, seeing as how astrological stuff is tied to star positions rather than personal powers imbued within a person. The explosion gives people powers, it doesn't give stars the ability to give people powers, if that makes any sense.

Maybe somebody could be obsessed with astrology to the point where their belief in it shapes the way their mutations emerge, leading to Zodiac-related powers?

Oh, i didn't meant they got their powers from the stars, maybe it's a bit complicated when overthought. I think i'll stick with Crystallokinesis + Triboluminescence

I have an idea for a character whose powers are more of a curse, being centered around his biology being adapted to focus solely on electricity. He can’t see, instead perceiving electromagnetic patterns, and regularly generates powerful electromagnetic pulses as his biology converts natural radiation into electricity.

So um what about a person turned 1930s/Animaniacs/loony tunes person?
I see no problem with that, as long as they don't change the rules of others into cartoon rules. Like, they can react to getting smashed by giant hammer by getting squished into a little accordion person (don't know how to describe it, you know what I mean), but they can't make OTHERS abide by cartoon logic.

That's pretty interesting, actually... like a much more unorthodox version of Toph. Maybe he was blinded as a kid by the super bright explosion from the 2004 incident?

Huh, that could be cool! Perhaps the blast flattened his home and killed his family, and he survived due to his rapid mutation.

Well, the blast was less like a bomb or nuke and more like an EMP. It was extremely bright and let off a massive amount of radiation, but didn't actually destroy structures or kill people (aside from the Space Shuttle, which disappeared completely).

Ah, gotcha.
