Fantasy Malleus Maleficarum: A Tale of the Accused

Malleus Maleficarum: A Tale of the Accused

Witches, women who have dabbled in witchcraft for one reason another. Some made pacts with the devil and are lustful creatures created to sin, to tempt humanity away from the path of God, or so the church says. These women, and even men, were burned at the stake or beheaded for these crimes against humanity. The first to fall was the young hero of France, the saint Joan of Arc who led the country to victory against England. A god-fearing girl who only wanted what was best for her people had been tied down to a stake and set a blaze by the countrymen that she sought to protect. Soon, witch trials began sprouting all across southeastern France, beginning in the small town of Valais, and eventually spreading all across Europe. The death toll steadily grew as more women and men were accused of witchcraft daily. The church was in charge of proctoring these trials, following Malleus Maleficarum or the Hammer of Witches, to help to identify and deal with these blasphemous beings.

However, what if I were to tell you that there were no witches, no man or woman capable of controlling magic, all of this a front for something much more sinister? So why did the trials exist in the first place when women and men could not defend themselves nor were they given any formal or fair trial? Was it due to fear? Fear of the unknown? If so, why had the church made it their goal to proctor all these trial when their man power would be spread were they to continuously do so? Earlier I've stated that there is no such thing as witches or sorcerers, so now I ask, what if I were to tell you that witches weren't born, but made? The church, their holy bible and the Hammer of Witches did not tell of how to destroy witches, but how to create them. A terrifying thought, to make what you seek to vanquish. Oh, but there is more to the story than meets the eyes. For though witches are the creation of humans, the devils and angels spoke of in the ancient texts are very much real. Sadly, it is not my place to tell you, the falsely accused, of the truth of the world or why you were created. However, why don't I help you in gaining your salvation? Right the wrongs of those who have turned you into this sinful being. Take my hand if you wish for your revenge to take fruit.
...
Who am I you ask? I am the one who they called a saint, though now I am nothing more than a tale to scare children. You can all just call me Joan.

Hello, Stale Biscuit over here. I'm looking to do a historical fantasy of the witch trials that happened in Europe in the mid 1400s - 1500s. I've been craving something dark and gritty, similar to Berserk. I'm hoping for at least 3-4 other people to join in this small group rp about witches and warlocks banning together for revenge. Against who? Depends on the person. Some may curse their accusers, the priest that refused to listen to them, or even the church itself. I'm gonna list a few rules below just to hint at what I'm seeking:

1. Please follow RPN rules. No explanation needed there.
2. I'd like some literacy i.e. basic grammar and a couple of paragraphs. Not really strict on the paragraph count, but at least one solid paragraph with 5 - 7 sentences would be appreciated. I tend to write a lot, but I know that can be sometimes hard to do, plus this is all for fun.
3. Post once a week. I know life happens, so I completely understand if you can't post, but please let me know. It is not mandatory, but if after a week and I hear nothing I will move on in the RP.
4. Potentially use Discord for OOC. I think it'd be easier to use Discord to chat with one another though this is not mandatory.
5. Be at least 18+.
6. Have fun. I'm gonna be really relaxed with this as I am coming back from a long hiatus of not rping, so just have fun with it.

That's about it. If you're interested or have any questions pm me or post it down below.

Thanks. Will add a few more details later on.

So they’re people who burned at the stake to be turned into witches
Essentially, although I think I will elaborate further on this. Witches are not always successfully created, in fact, the chance of becoming a witch is around 2%. For a witch to be created, they must enter a pact with a demon. Demons or devils, are very fickle creatures and do not just lend their services to anyone. They tend to feed off hatred and suffering, though no one really understands the exact criteria of ensuring a pact with a devil, but it is thought that the more suffering a person is made to endure the more attractive they become to a devil. The specific names of these devils are hidden away in a sacred scripture within the church, so very few know of them.

...
So in short, burning a witch is only the last phase of making someone into a witch. The entire trial, from the accusation to the forced confession, is all part of the process of creating a witch. If that makes sense. Gotta a little long winded there, sorry.

Sold. I enjoy the refreshing idea that witches are created especially with that explanation of a pact through demons/devils. With that kind of idea you can even go beyond on having tiers of powers, depending on the strength of their hatred and demon.

Alrighty, thanks for your interest! I'm thinking of assigning devils based on backstories, though I will give people options to choose from. All devils will be pulled from the testament of Solomon, so each one will have a name, a specific brand used to mark their contractor, a rank (Marquis, Duke, etc) , an ability, and an angel that thwarts them or a specific ritual that scares the devil away. I thought it be fun to follow the whole 72 demon thing of Solomon. I'll elaborate on this more when we get started.

Definitely interested. I'm pretty into stuff like the Ars Goetia myself, and am pretty familiar with all sorts of apocrypha. Out of curiosity, would it be alright to call dibs on Vine? Dude's kinda my go to for this kinda stuff.

I might be interested. I'll keep an eye out for more information~
Alright, will keep you posted!

Thank you for your interest! At the moment, I'm not sure whether I'm going to allow people to chose their own demons as I'm trying to make randomize pacts. Will be giving options to choose from, but that is all dependent on backstories.

This definitely piqued my interest!
Thanks! Guess I'll get the thread started then.

Since I've got a decent amount of folks, I'll go about starting the thread and getting the discord set up. Let me know if anyone changes their mind at all during this process. Thanks!
