Beacon Academy. In the aftermath of a world torn apart by great war, it was one of four academies constructed to train warriors to serve as protectors of the innocent and defenders of peace. The four shining lights in a world filled with darkness. Huntsmen and huntresses aplenty walked its halls, studied in its classrooms, trained on its grounds, lived in its dormitories. For many it was just what its name implied, a school and nothing else. Even some of the others on her own team, WTCH, saw it that way. But for the young Cinder, it was more than just that. For months now she viewed it as home. A real home, one worth the name. It may have only been simply because she had been given a power she'd never expected, but she didn't care. Even with how uncooperative and overbearing their team leader Arthur could be, or how annoying Tyrian's excessive energy could be, or how distant Hazel often seemed, it was still leaps and bounds, no, miles above where she had once been forced to call home.

And yet, it was even more than just that. A fact that very few at the school, and even in the whole world of Remnant knew about. A group that existed in the shadows, dedicated to combating the evils out there that the public went unaware of. Headmistress Salem, Professor Goodwitch, James Ironwood, the leaders of the other two academies, a select several others...a secret she had been let in on after months of being here, months of being quietly observed and judged. She had been trained to a degree with the power she'd been gifted with, but until that private talk just days ago she not known what it was, why she had been the one to receive it, or most importantly what it meant.

And now that the secrets have been revealed(or at least a lot of them, she wasn't certain if they were withholding more), she had to admit a part of her wanted to forget what she had been told. The burden of knowledge that rested within, the secrecy she had been sworn to keep from her friends, even the rest of her team...it wore heavily on her. That was why as the others on her team studied, played some games or just simply relaxed...she had been here for hours. One of the academy's training rooms, mostly empty at this time of day. Her body was covered with sweat, her muscles ached as she practiced with her bow, trained herself with her blades, even trying to improve how she was with fisticuffs.

Anything to keep her mind from dwelling on the secrets she had to keep, on the powers of the Maiden that had gone to her at random, how in a single unexpected moment a poor kid from a broken home had become one of the most crucially important people in all of Remnant...and whether or not that was a blessing or a curse.

"..."

In a moment of frustration, she lashed out so hard with her fist that her aura crackled...and ensured that the school would need to purchase another training dummy. Oops.

The headless dummy slowly tilted over, the top of its plastic neck slightly smoldering as it thudded against the ground. It laid there unmoving after its untimely demise, exactly as you'd expect an inanimate object to. Which is why it was so unnerving when it decided to stop doing that, its arms suddenly going up perpendicular to its torso as it slowly tilted back up and rose to its feet, before starting on a waddling walk towards the young fall maiden in a seeming attempt at vengeance for its vicious murder.

Clearly Beacon was haunted. By both the vengeful ghost of the dummy and whatever the tiny bit of brown hair poking around the corner of the door was.

"Wha--" Despite how tired she was, Cinder leaped back a good distance in shocked surprise. When she landed on her feet, her bow was already nocked and she released split-seconds later, the arrow soaring through the air and hitting the phantom dummy square on...which made it crack and fall apart, spreading across the floor like shattered glass.

"...Oh." Okay good, they hadn't somehow upgraded the dummy or worse, been infiltrated by a Grimm geist. This was just- "Neo." She stated, looking around quickly before settling on the smallest hint of hair edging around the corner. She rubbed at her forehead before continuing, clearly exasperated but nevertheless walking over to the door and wiping away sweat along the way.

"Do you want something?"

The hair was even easier to find with the snickering that was accompanying it now, and as her name was said she slipped out from behind the door with an overly dramatic bow. She came from it with a slightly softer smile and shook her head, giving Cinder a pair of thumbs up before her mouth quirked into a frown of concern as she turned both fingers to point at Cinder. She glanced at the Dummy as she did so, now back to where it was in its final resting place till the angels in custodial took it to the big recycling center in the sky Vale

"Yes yes, very funny." She sounded annoyed but she couldn't help from returning the smile with a grin of her own. Albeit one that quickly vanished, replaced by a serious look. Neo hadn't said a word, as usual, but even an idiot like Winchester could have picked up on her meaning. "It's--" Cinder bit her lip. She really wished she could tell somebody about what she had been told. Even just sharing 10% of it would have been a huge weight off of her and who better to tell than somebody who doesn't talk? But she had sworn not to. It was with a pronounced sigh that she continued. "Watts is in a real prickly mood today. Just releasing some stress." She glanced back to the dummy.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe too much." She added before half-shrugging. "But nevermind talking about Watts, what are you doing here? Nothing better to do than trying to startle me?"

"hmm..." She held Cinder's gaze for a few seconds before she smiled back and patted the other's shoulder consolingly. Either thats all it was, or it wasn't any of Neo's business. At the question, she rolled her eyes, and little shards of glass seemed to roll up her form before suddenly a red-headed kid in a bowler hat was standing in front of Cinder instead, putting his hands against his head with his eyes closed and snoring.

The illusion broke apart with a snort before she shrugged and gestured at the dummies while she spun her own weapon in hand. After she did, her eyes brightened somewhat before she pointed between the two of them and put her fists up and shifted her feet back and forth like a boxer, shifting her eyebrows up and down a few times. Granted, it looked like Cinder just got done training, but...

“...” For a moment there she was as quiet as Neo usually was as she considered the challenge before shrugging. Sure why the hell not, she thought to herself, raising her own fists and moving into a better stance...though she didn’t throw a single punch, golden eyes staring intensely into pink and brown ones. Cinder was seemingly content to wait for the other to make the first move.

Her smile took on a sharper edge, and she immediately flipped backwards away from Cinder to take up a start position farther away. She came up with her parasol resting against her shoulders and with her free hand holding up three fingers as her eyes studied Cinder. Team WTCH may have become close friends with her own the last few years, but she still had her own team's reputation to defend!

Two fingers.

One.

...

She sat there, holding up one finger much longer than the others ones had been, before the gym's lighting started to cast a shadow over Cinder, and while 'Neo' still seemed to be standing across from Cinder, Neo came flying down with an axe kick aimed at Cinder's shoulder.

Picking a hand to hand sparring match with Neo and expecting to win was an iffy prospect at the best of times. Doing so after having already spent hours training definitely skewed the odds way more in one direction. But despite that, she was determined to do her best and not make it easy for the ice cream queen to prevail. If for nothing else than to throw it back into Watts' face whenever he tried to call her the weak link anything. The seemingly frozen Neo had her wary and the lighting made her even more so. Her eyes narrowed and in that moment a hint of movement from above caught her eye and Cinder swiftly pivoted, hand moving to grab the leg as it came down and throw Neo to the side before lunging after with an uppercut aimed right for that jaw.

She gasped in surprise as her foot was napped, but hit the ground with a graceful roll rather than a painful thud as she was tossed to the side. She came up and immediately leaned backwards and to the side, her parasol snapping open behind her back to deflect a followup blow till she was facing the right away one more. It snapped shut as she hopped backwards again, and she flipped it in her hands as she stepped up to swing it straight for Cinder's noggin. It either shattered on impact or the instant Neo's real umbrella handle hooked around Cinder's ankle, aiming to yank Cinder into an unwilling backflip before she swung it at the other girl like she was a tee'd up baseball

Her forearm rose up to intercept and block that swing for the skull...only for that attack to shatter into pieces. For the tiniest of moments right in between that false umbrella shattering and Neo's actual umbrella hooking around her ankle, the expression on Cinder's face quite clearly revealed her thoughts. Oh no. Mistakes were made.

In the next moment she was yoinked right off her feet and flipped right over, catching only the barest glimpse of the umbrella coming in like a baseball bat before it struck and knocked her over to the side. Her back hit the ground hard but she ignored the pang of pain as she kept the momentum up, sliding fluidly into a backwards roll that got her back to her feet. Cinder's glare at Neo was an intense one...for all of two seconds before it softened and she smirked. This was actually fun. "Alright, not bad."

She separated the bow in her hands back into two twin blades before she rushed at Neo and swung them in a quick flurry of blows, hoping to overwhelm Neo.

When Cinder came up from her roll, Neo was standing where she'd left her, bouncing her parasol on her shoulder and with her tongue stuck out at the unknown maiden. The intense glare lasted about a second longer than Neo was comfortable with, and her smile started to waver as she scratched at her chin with a nervous giggle. She knew she could be a frustrating opponent but- oh crap-

She sidestepped the first swing in an awkward stumble and ducked the second, parried the third only to get cracked in the side by the fourth, the gym lighting up pink for a moment as her aura flared. She winced and narrowed her eyes, swinging her umbrella up to parry the next blow before opening it right between Cinders arms, briefly forcing her spread eagle as the parasol snapped closed again and jabbed forward like a bladeless rapier in a flurry of return strikes. The slight tinkling noise of Neo's semblance heralded the creation of a pirate hat on her head in the midst of it

Oh the perils of fighting somebody using an umbrella. It opening right between her arms forced her into being wide open for a follow up strike. Or to be honest a series of strikes that hit her before she had a chance to defend. She could feel her aura getting closer and closer to breaking with every blow. Before the last one hit though, she jumped back to get some space, blades reconnecting into bow form and she fired off multiple arrows before she even landed back on her feet.

And when she did land, her attention was more on the sudden pirate hat than Neo herself. ".......Uh what's with that?" She asked loudly, clearly taken aback.

Neo ducked as the first arrow came and snapped open her parasol to deflect the next bunch, only her eyes and hat poking over the top to watch Cinder as she landed. She popped back to her feet and spun the parasol as it closed, clearly amused with herself as she leaned further into the bit that had initially been a brief whim; her clothes shifted into a long coat and boots, and her parasol looked like a Cutlass that she flourished dramatically for a few seconds-

The sound of crunching glass, left over from bits of Cinders semblance suddenly came from behind her, and the piratical Neo froze mid flourish as the real Neo winced mid-windup from where she was right behind Cinder, about to thwack the other on the backside

"...What, no answer? Even for you, that's--" The sudden noise behind her interrupted her and the sight of the Neo apparently living out her fantasy dream of being a pirate just freezing in place only made it more clear. Oh no. Cinder thought to herself, only able to widen her eyes in concern and begin to turn before she got thwacked, knocking her forward and to the floor.

She laid there unmoving for several seconds, growling angry mumbles along the lines of "you're lucky I'm tired, if I had been faster that never would have...those infernal mirages..." among other things before one hand rage-punched the ground so hard that it cracked. Another couple seconds past before she pushed herself back up to her feet. With deliberately pronounced slowness, Cinder turned her head to look over her shoulder at Neo, and the intense look was back...albeit upped a couple more notches.

"Rargh!" She roared in anger, the only warning for the sudden charge that followed, Cinder swinging both her blades at Neo in a frenzy, not intending to let up until either Neo's aura broke or she herself just collapsed in exhaustion from the attempt.

'Buenos dias, Cinder'

"Rargh!" She roared in anger, the only warning for the sudden charge that followed, Cinder swinging both her blades at Neo in a frenzy, not intending to let up until either Neo's aura broke or she herself just collapsed in exhaustion from the attempt.

When Cinder turned towards Neo, the other was doing her best to contain her snickers, half doubled over at her own internal jokery. The sound of Cinder's roar made her head snap upwards, and it wasn't so much that she still wanted to smile as it got stuck on her face as she flipped back from the first swing with a hiss of surprise. She pushed herself up out of her hand spring to dodge a low, but being mid air made for poor maneuvering, and in desperation she let a clone of herself shoot forward as she hid herself in illusions to feign a punch, but Cinder's next strike smashed straight through the clone and her cloaking to catch her square in the chest, sending her cartwheeling through the air with none of her usual grace before she landed on the mat a few yards away with a heavy thump, just in time for the gym's aura monitering to shoot off a quick pair of horn blasts to signal someone sinking to red levels.

The obvious barely reined in laughter at her expense would have made her even more mad, were it not for her wild attacks proving to be enough given how Neo hit the ground and the sound of the horns making it clear that Neopolitan's aura had fallen to dangerously low levels. Cinder instead pulled back from attacking further, tossing her blades to the floor and taking a few to catch her breath. That quick spar had taken a lot of her remaining energy, and even just standing here felt tiring. Those breaths let her anger cool as well and she let out a sigh. Despite how tired she felt, she was quick to stride over to where the ice cream queen had landed and extend out a hand to help her up. If she wanted the help anyway.

"S-sorry. I may have...okay, did lose my temper. My bad."

Cinder once more got a pair of thumbs up in response, though they were a little slower to come up than before. She took the hand and pulled herself up with a hop before she rolled her shoulder with a small wince and dusted off her pants. She waved her hands in front of her and shook her head at the apology, spinning the umbrella to lightly tap Cinder's ankle and hip with her parasol as she put on a slight smirk. She'd started it after all

She rolled her neck, still wincing a bit at what was definitely gonna be bruise before she made a show of looking at a nonexistent watch. She glanced up at Cinder and tilted her head in askance as he put a hand out, a faux sandwich materializing in her hand to get the question across.

"Good." Cinder replied, mightily relieved that Neo was pretty much alright. The young fall maiden had gotten many lectures on how she far too easily let her anger run rampant and she wasn't keen on hearing yet another. But much more importantly, she didn't have too many friends here and risking potentially damaging one of those friendships out of a spar that got out of control wasn't a thing she wanted. Her eyes shot down to the illusion sandwich when it popped up and she just chuckled before nodding. "Yeah, sure. I can go for something good. Maybe some tri-tip." She turned around to go back up her blades, reconnect them into bow form and slide it onto her back before turning towards Neo, gesturing for her to lead the way.

"zzz...."

An alarm he'd set for himself rested lopsided on his nightstand. It blared and blared like an incessant siren. Normally, it worked fine and Roman got up and got dressed and hung out with Neo and the rest of his team without any trouble. But this night he was sleeping a bit harder than usual and so when that blaring just wouldn't stop, he grumbled and reached around for where he kept Melodic Cudgel under his bed.

*BWOOOOOM BWOOOOOOM BWOOOOM-*

*THWACK*

Bits and pieces of metal and other guffins falling off the nightstand and onto the floor was of no concern to him. Sitting up in bed with a tuft of his hair covering the wrong eye, he scoffed and shifted it over to the side. Neo seemed to already be gone and as he clambered out of bed, what he'd done slowly began to dawn on him.

"Oh for crying out loud..." Sighing with a degree of exasperation that he felt every teenage boy made when they didn't want to get up. Grabbing his clothes and slamming the bathroom door shut behind him, he once again lost track of time as he showered, got dressed, and adjusted his hair until it looked just like he wanted. He was ready to go find Neo and finally start the day off right.

...Almost.

Hooking the underside of his bowler hat with his cane, he flipped it up and smiled as it landed perfectly atop his head. "...Great job, Roman. One of the coolest things you'v done and nobody saw it." Heading for the door, he rushed off to find his partner!

She had no idea what that was but she nodded nonetheless and bounded down the hall, spinning her scroll into hand with expert grace and shooting a text with the sort of speed that'd make a typist blush to let Roman know where they were going in case his lazy ass actually decided to exist in the waking realm

With Neo's back to her as Cinder followed behind, the fall maiden was quick to glance around and make sure nobody else was in sight before she took a quick sniff of her own armpit. After all that training and the spar and how much she had been sweating, she'd hoped the smell wasn't too bad...her hope was not to be. It definitely wasn't the worst thing she ever smelled but she'd for sure need a shower and SOON. But for the moment...her stomach rumbled as if on cue and she dashed up to walk side by side with the smaller Neo. "So...…..how have things been with you? Or your team?"

Looking at his scroll as the notification popped up, he laughed. The headsup was appreciated but if there was anything minor about their relationship that Roman appreciated? It was the fact that Neo got up, saw he was still sleeping, and then let him sleep. Granted, when he finally DID wanna wake up, he still didn't wanna do anything but just shut his eyes and go right back to slumberland. But he felt refreshed and ready to take on the day! Or whatever was left of it anyway! Making his way down to the cafeteria to get some food and catch up with Neo there, he shot a text back.

"Gotcha. Ty for letting me snooze. See ya soon ; ) "

She put a finger to her chin and tapped it a few times, her other hand clasping her parasol behind her back as she glanced to the hallway's ceiling. That was a question, wasn't it? 'Well, first off, one of them has the world's biggest crush on you. Just utterly goo goo eyed. Wants to climb you like a tree. Life's goal is to put the sin in Cinder, as it were.'

She truly hoped she got all that across with the simple thumbs up she eventually shot Cinder in response, and definitely wasn't snickering when she did.

".....Deep." She couldn't keep herself from sarcastically commenting. Though the snickers that accompanied the thumbs up greatly puzzled her. Is there a joke here that I'm missing??? She wasn't sure but she was sure that there wouldn't be much point in asking directly. The thoughts on what that thumbs up could have possibly meant so consumed her attention that she wasn't minding her surroundings, and when they reached the cafeteria, she walked straight into the door and banged her head off it. "Ow."
