My Interest Check
As soon as Nemera was out of sight of her team, she leaped into the air, grabbing a branch and swinging herself upward, catapulting herself a little higher on the tree. She got her bearings, surveyed her surroundings to check for enemies, then, finding none, she leaped swiftly and quietly from tree to tree. Gaara, her twin brother, had made the decision for them and their two older siblings, their sister Temari and their brother Kankurō, to split up. That way, they would cover more ground and increase their odds that one of them would find the scroll they needed to pass the second stage of the Chunin Exams. Using his sand, Gaara had gouged a mark into one of the trees surrounding the clearing they were in, so they would be able to tell where to meet back up. She had memorized the sight and even scent of the mark, before heading off in search of a rival team to ambush and steal their scroll....

Or, at least that’s what her siblings would think she was doing. Her true objective was to stop Orochimaru from biting Sasuke and infecting him with the Curse Mark. So much pain and misery could have been avoided if he never received the curse mark. He might not leave the village to go to Orochimaru. He might not become evil...or at least not as much or in as devastating a way. She didn’t want him, or anyone else, to suffer. She had made up her mind a long time ago that she would use the knowledge she had of this world to change as much as she could for the better.

True, everything had ultimately been okay in the end, but so many horrible events had still taken place. So many had suffered and countless lives had been lost. Including those of characters—no, people —she cared about. She knew it was risky to try and change anything....But she couldn’t just sit back and watch all of this happen! She’d never be able to forgive herself....

She had already changed something, back when she and Gaara were six years old. She had made certain to be there for him; to be his friend and love him when no one else would. She had even told him the truth: about what was inside of him, why the villagers feared and ostracized him—and, by extension, Nemera herself for her association with him—everything. Had encouraged him to not give in to Shukaku or the cruel demands of their ‘father’ and the village elders that he become their weapon. That he had a choice to become something else. That he was not a monster, and she would always love him.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t prevent Yashamaru’s death, the repeated assassination attempts of their shitty excuse of a father that came after, or the negative impact all of this had on her poor brother; she had been too young, too inexperienced, too...weak. All she could do was stick by him, instilling as much of a sense of morality in him that she could manage. They had developed a strong bond over the years and she had done her best for him....but had it been enough to make a difference? She...wasn’t certain. She hoped so.

Now, she was stronger and had a little more experience, but she wasn’t so delusional as to believe she could actually take Orochimaru on and win. No, her goal was more to find a way to drive him off, or to aid Team 7 in escaping him and finding help. When the scent of snake reached her, she paused, eying her surroundings warily. ‘He must be close by...but where?’ she thought warily. She waited a moment, stretching her senses out as far as they could go...Then tensed when her ears picked up the faint sound of screaming. ‘Shit...he’s made his move! I have to hurry!’ she thought, proceeding towards the sound as quickly and quietly as she could manage. The metallic tang of blood soon assaulted her nostrils, causing her to feel a sense of dread and urgency. Her pace unconsciously quickened; she had to make it in time! When the trees finally thinned out, opening up into a clearing...she spotted them. Team 7...and Orochimaru....
