Cauchemar

Ian Temero

Knight of Swords
Ian Temero submitted a new role play:

Cauchemar - What if your one greatest fear became your one greatest strength?

Nightmares.

That's what they're called. People who's greatest fears become their power. A person with the fear of heights being able to fly. Someone who's afraid of being lied to, creating illusions. Someone who's afraid of being controlled gaining the power to give absolute commands.

They're feared of course. One would have to be a fool not to be afraid of fear.

You wake up one day and find that you make your greatest fear reality.

You are a Nightmare.

Will you let your...

walking is all i have ever know. traveling from place to place never staying in one location too long. i do this because i have a fear. a fear of losing those close to me. I've had this fear since i was young and my best friend just up and disappeared one day. i couldn't understand it. my parents had told me that he had went to a better place. a place where he could truly be loved and appreciated. i never understood what it meant till i was older but even when i did my fear kept with me. so here i am now. in limbo. a new time. a new beginning. if i mess this up or i get too involved i will move on again but i will make sure that any that knew me will not remember me least my fear becomes there own.

"Authorities in the subject believe that 5% of all people living in Limbo are Nightmares. However in my experience, having lived in this city all of my life, the Nightmare population is actually closer to 15%. Since a Nightmare's power is based on their fears, it would only make sense that most of them would be to afraid to use them-"

Luis stopped typing and looked up in time to see a car nearly hit him. Once again he had been so focused on the report that he was writing that he had failed to notice that he had walked right into the middle of traffic. He dashed for the nearest sidewalk, diving just as another car nearly ran him over. He picked himself up, brushed his pants off, and adjusted his neck scarf. He threw a glare back at the treacherous road. What the heck! This kind of thing was only supposed to happen to him on Mondays! Not on Saturday!

Hopefully he could make it to the coffee shop in one piece...

Lyra bolted up in bed, sweat pouring down her back. I had the nightmare again. She thought. Looking down at her clock she realized how late it was already. She groaned and quickly pulled on some pants and a clean t-shirt. "At least I don't have school today." she thought and went out of the apartment and walked down the street.

Amity sighed happily, passing a customer his coffee. Sometimes a regular schedule was just plain old BORING, but since last night, she was content with the familiarity. She hated having nightmares.

"Billy!" She called out, putting another steaming hot cup on the counter.

Her employer passed by her. "Hair up!" He teased her, yanking on a loose strand of hair trailing out of her pony tail. Rolling her eyes, she tucked it back in, and when he turned around, she stuck her tongue out at him, much to the amusement of Billy.

"That will be 2 dollars 25 cents. Have a good day!" She sang cheerily.

Slipping out from behind the counter, she dodged around crowds of people, making her way to a group of old ladies, chatting away.

Setting down the coffee, she slowly made her way back up to the counter. Halfway there, she tripped on an outstretched leg, seeming there on purpose. Apologizing, she stood back up, pulling her skirt down hastily. Walking back, she heard a chorus of laughter from that table. She narrowed her eyes and blushed. Then, she walked back behind the counter, resolving not to get angry like that again. Nobody knew she was a nightmare. How 'bout we keep it that way, she thought grimly.

Archi carefully tuned his guitar. Sitting on the side of the road, he had placed himself right where he knew he would get some attention. If he played well, he might even be able to buy lunch today! The thought of food made his stomach growl. Best get over that and get to singing. Oh well. Archi turned away from the crowd for a moment, singing a bit to warm up his voice.

He turned back to the crowd with a smile. He looked down at his guitar, picking some notes, then nodded and plugged it into his amp. The song he sang was protest song (he had learned pretty quick that people round here liked those), and it was a bouncy, high energy tune. When he was done, there was some polite applause, and some money was tossed into his case. But not enough to pay for food. His stomach growled again at the thought, and quite loudly this time.

Luis looked at his own elbow, "Well, my elbow may be a bit skinned but... Wait. Kid?" He turned to look at the person talking to him. Luis had been told that he looked younger than he actually was, but for this seventeen year old to be calling him a kid? If nearly getting ran over twice hadn't put him in a bad move, this certainly had.

"Kid?" He repeated, "What are you, seventeen? Let me tell you, I teach kids your age for a living. You should be able to do the math and figure out how old I would have to be to have that job. Then again, based on the wear and tear on your clothes I would assume you dropped out of school. So maybe you can't do the math. Now if you'll excuse me, I have places to-" His statement was cut short as he tripped over a guitar case, scattering coins everywhere.

"Here let me help you with that," Shadow gets on his hands and knees and starts to pick up the coins. "Sorry if my comment got to you. I meant no disrespect by it, but you do look to be about my age which is indeed seventeen. While my clothes are a bit worn it's only because I travel quite often. I don't really like making friends so when I feel like I have I move to another place." Shadow puts the coins he has picked up back in the case."It seems we've gotten off on the wrong foot." He extends his hand. "Name's Shadow."

Amity ran her hand through her hair and sighed, yet again. Today was strange, and in a pretty usual way, too. That one busker was busy out in the streets again, desperately trying to get enough money to buy his meal. If only he played some different songs once in a while... his playing occasionally scared off good customers. Part of her wanted to give him her money and tell him to go eat, but the other side wanted him to go away.

She was jolted back to reality when her manager walked by and scowled at her, sternly shaking his head. Mentally slapping herself in the head, she rushed back to the counter, now delivering a large amount of coffee.

Archi watched his money scatter in shock. Two hours of work. He quickly put down his guitar down and dove for the coins.

"NOOOOOOOOO!" He scrambled to pick up the money. This is what he would be living on! All this was the difference between eating and not! He nodded appreciatively to the boy in front of him. As he grabbed the last few coins, he stood and his stomach let out an earth shaking growl. He looked down and shushed it.

"Not now. Will have enough for food in another hour." He looked at the people in front of him apologetically. "You folks probably didn't want to hear that. Sorry." He started to walk back to his guitar, a bit embarrassed.

As Amity ran her hand through her hair, she thought one thought: where in the FLIPPIN' world was Twilight?!?!

There were far too many people for one person to manage.

Luis sighed and helped pick up the coins. He pretty much ignored the street bum. "No, I should be the one appologizing. I shouldn't have snapped like that. I just have an issue with -" he was interrupted by the bum's stomach growling. He couldn't hold back his conscious any longer. "Okay. As an apology for scattering your earnings how about I get you breakfast." He turned to Shadow. "You might as well come along too." He felt like he was forgetting something... "Oh, right. Name's Luis."

Just then a young girl with deep purple hair dashed past them and quite literally fell through the doors of the coffe shop. She stayed face down on the ground for a second before picking herself up, a bright smile across her face. "Sorry I'm late... again." Twilight called out.

Smiling, Amity threw Twilight her uniform and told her to hurry up, there was a large holdup in the line. She turned back to serving people there coffee.

"It's cool Mr. Luis and sure I'll come along. I was looking for a place to get some chow. I guess you would know some of the best places in town.

The aforementioned bum stared at Luis, eyes full of love. Well, not "love", but you know. Love.

Archi quickly pocketed the change, and packed up his guitar. There were a few cat calls from the people coming by, and a few even thanked Luis as they passed. Archi took no notice of this, however.

"Thank you. Oh thank you thank you thank you. And I'm Archi." He hoped he didn't get the jokes most people slung when they heard his name. But hey, what can you do?

"That name sounds familiar. Where have I heard it before?" Shadow thought for a few seconds. "Oh yeah, isn't that the name of a character from a comic book that came out in the 80's? Don't get me wrong it's a nice name and all, but don't you get like a lot of jokes at your expense due to that fact?"

"Well, there's the coffee shop that I usually go to just across the street. I know they serve pastries there." He led them over to the shop and pushed the door open. The little bell rang and Luis caught sight of Twilight running into the back room to clock in. "Good morning, Amity." He said to the young girl behind the counter. "I'll take a vanilla latte. You two, feel free to order anything you want."

"Good morning, Mr. McAllen!" She grabbed a cup and passed it to Twilight to fill.

Turning to his companions, she smiled. The hobo was there, and some other guy. One part of her was glad that he finally got someone to buy him a meal, and the other half was screaming its head off at him and running away as fast as possible.

So she smiled at Shadow. "And what would you like, Mr.... Tall, dark and mysterious?"

A slight blush creeps it's way onto shadows face. "W-well this is my first time here so I'm really not sure. What would you recommend Miss. Blue eyed and Beautiful?" Shadow flashed a small smile at the girl behind the counter at the end of his sentence.

Amity smiled. "I like the Carmel Latte. And if you want something to eat, I would suggest the Cheese Danish."

Winking at him, she turned to Archi. "And how 'bout you, Mr. Sings-a-lot? What would you like?"

Lyra open the door to the coffee shop, not bothering to look at anyone. She went up to the counter, seeing two other costumers in front of her she clasped her hands together in front of her, looking at the different choices of coffee and pastries on the wall behind the counter.

A deeply sleeping Cher was dreaming pleasantly in her enormous bedroom. Her golden blonde waves were fanned out on the pink satin pillow around her innocent unconscious face. Sweet peachy pink lips were left ajar as her chest rose and fell. But then, all of that took a drastic turn. Her nose scrunched up and her body and limbs did the same, her knees being quickly hugged to her chest as if she'd been struck in the stomach. In her mind, a figure towered over her, holding a sharp dagger that slowly neared her body. The duvet that concealed her small body quivered with her as the nightmare continued.

Bobby sat there quietly looking out the window of his small apartment. It was nice for a small space only one bedroom which was enough. As he sat there he was thinking of a time when he was just a normal person. Or maybe he had never really been a normal person but was so afraid he never knew. He slowly melted into his thought, He was 13 then and never really did much or had friends except his younger brother but that didnt really count. Bobby had been told by the teacher that he had to speak in front of the class when they go back from lunch. That really scared him he had never talked in front of anyone besides his family and his father had always taught him never to speak because his voice sounded funny. Everyday if he spoke his dad would hit him so eventually Bobby just stopped and didnt talk to anyone. His mother sent him to a specialist to see if that would help but Bobby never uttered a word. And now his teacher was making him speak, as he stood there in front of the class holding his report wishing he wasnt in this position. Bobby opened his mouth and began to speak but instead of word a blast of air came out and knocked the kid in the first row over onto the floor.

Bobby shook his head and checked the time. It was time for him to go for his run. He got up put on his jacket and went out the door leaving his memory at home.

Ding-dong!

One of the maids that worked for the Collins family looked towards the door a little surprised. Were they expecting guests today? When she opened the door she saw a tough looking woman with a motorcycle jacket and sunglasses standing there. "Excuse me," the woman said "Is this the Collins household?"

The maid gave her a cautious look. "Yes, it is. And who might you be?"

"Kurosawa. I do believe that the masters of the house are expecting me."

"Oh! The new body guard!" The maid mentally slapped her self for forgetting that they were expecting a guest. "I'll go let them know that you're here..."
