Strange friends

Johnny R McAvery

Magic still exist for those willing to see.
Alex was heading down the cobblestone road that lead its way into the heart of the city. He passed several shops, and had even stopped inside one of them to get some sweets. He was hungry and with his gift he required a lot of energy. Today he was needed to follow a person they suspected to be in the slave trade. Something that was frowned down upon upon the magic users in the world. They had been among the first to try and abolish slavery and one of the ways they were doing so was by getting ride of the slave traders. The traders were't killed, but they were relocated to a place that they couldn't get slaves. It was a glorified prison of sorts, in fact it was it's own small town.

"Would you like this to be double wrapped, miss?"

The merchant held up the salmon that had been picked, it's glistening head poking out of a crinkly white paper that he blanketed it in as he stared at the large woman in front of him. Her eyes weren't visible - the brim of her top hat shielding her irises from view as she frowned. Was she frowning? He wasn't so sure. It seemed like a permanent fixture upon her face anyway.

She kept her hands behind her back, obstructing whatever was in her hands away from view, though he would assume one of them was holding the chain that was leading up to her...companion.

"GRRAAAGH."

The woman smiled, "Yes I know, you're hungry."

The creature grunted, scratching it's butt with his claws as he snorted, a trail of snot hanging from his nose.

The fish monger shifted his eyes rather quickly, looking at the amazonian woman and back at the bear with a quick lash of his tongue. "Madam, please I- your pet is scaring my other customers away." He tried looking at her, but something about her harsh, straight stance made him look back to the bear, diverting his attention away from her shielded face.

"Scare? Oh please...Tendon is harmless." she drawled, as the bear still stood on his haunches - the little bowler on his head and bow-tie around his neck not being much help to make him appear 'harmless'. "No, I do not believe I am in need of your paper, just give him the fish, hm?"

Placing a couple of shillings in the merchants hand and closing it with her own gloved one, she gave a ghost of a sinister smile, finally - for a brief moment revealing her icy blue eyes. "Though, watch your fingers, wont you?"

That's when he noticed the cat-o-nine tails that was poking out of her petticoat.

Alex cleared his throat at the scene. "Well it is nice to see that you are paying for goods. Then again it must be easy to do so." He was sitting on a fence post and seemed to be rather relaxed as he ate his pastry. "I actually have some questions for you if you wouldn't mind indulging my curiosity." He lept off the fence and stuffed the last bite into his mouth before taking a cloth out and wiped his hands clean.

"Hm?"

The woman looked over her shoulder, tilting the had up just so as she shifted her stance. By all means she wasn't small, built much like a hefty bear herself as she chuckled - though the sound of her pet gobbling up a fish without a second of hesitation covered the little snicker.

"Pray tell, who might you be then?" she inquired, wrapping the chain she was holding in her left hand a bit tighter as she angled herself. The woman obviously didn't wish to turn her back on the merchant. Paranoid, perhaps?

The bear licked his chops, letting out a low rumble as he sat, scratching it's throat and wiping away the mucus dangling from his lips with the back of his furry paw, though the creatures eyes never left the funny man's face. He seemed so puny compared to the creature - though, bears do tend to have a complex about their boisterous size.

"Names Alex ma'am. Not a whole lot to me. but you are wanted for crimes against humans. You will be subjected to the court for a formal hearing, and you will have a lawyer. Failure to comply politely will result in excessive force." Said Alex as he walked over to her. He didn't seem to be afraid of either her or the bear, which was amusing as he was so much smaller than the two of them. "I have a carriage procured for you."

The woman blinked, starting at the man for a pregnant moment, before waving her hand as if she was dismissing him.

"Oh please. Crimes against humans? Preposterous."

Petting her creature on the head, she looked at the man rather harshly. "Might I ask, where's your proof?"

"Proof? Well I have about a dozen witnesses, or should I say victims to your crimes. You might remember them by the fact that they look different, have chains on them, oh and they are doing forced labor, free of payment. I also happen to know that they are only a few." Said Alex as he stared the woman down, unblinking.

She mulled over her answer carefully, rubbing her temple. "Ah yes, those."

With a shrug and a roll of her eyes - she continued, twirling her finger in the air. "I suppose you caught me. Whoopity tiddly-do! Now the better question is, how do you plan on keeping me."

Looking him over up and down, noticing the comparable size difference, she couldn't help but let her mouth twitch slightly, as if it was trying to smile.

"Plus, I don't think a carriage is big enough for a one thousand pound bear."

"They're things in heaven and earth that a mere mortal doesn't understand."Said Alex as he pulled out string from his bag. "Hands in front of you. And yes we can easily carry your bear. He will be seen to until after your trial. If you win he'll return to you, if not we will find him a new home."

"Mmm....I suppose that's true." with a sigh, she put her hands up, giving her best, innocent look as she attempted to smile. "Alright then, Alex - is it? I s'pose I should come quietly then, though....There might be a slight problem."

Without hesitation, the woman kicked at the fish stall, spilling a river of fish into the street as she jumped over them. Tendon was up in an instant, letting out a fierce roar as he barrelled to the pile, knocking down anything that happened to be in his path. The fish monger was yelling obscenities though he wouldn't dare stop the animal, as on-lookers began to panic at the bear that was now loose from the woman's chain. Many began to run in different directions, though her top hat was able to be seen within the crowd, as well as the sound of her heeled boots clacking on the dusty cobble stone street.

((Nice doodle. I like it))

Alex sighed in annoyance. He hated runners and on top of that he had to deal with a bear. He grabbed the bear by it's chain and tried to pull the bear towards him. He had no fear of the creature, he had seen many as a child. "Bear I need you to be calm. Your lovely owner has left you. Don't you want to find her." He knew that he wouldn't be able to communicate with the bear but he was hoping that it would at least calm down. "Fish man. Please allow the bear to eat whatever fish he likes if I can get him to calm down. It'll keep him quiet. I will pay for whatever he eats."

((Keep in mind he is gripping the chain of the bear. SO whatever the bear decides to do it'll take him with him.))

With cheeks full of fish heads, Tendon whipped his head around to stare at the funny man. Gurgling a sound of confusion, he turned back to the street, realizing that his friend left. WAIT.

She left?

"GRAAAARGBBBLE."

With a woeful cry, the bear began to bound towards the street, causing an even bigger panic than before as he tried to make his way towards her, grunting at the feeling of a sudden weight behind him and turning around, roaring in the mans face. Fish guts and spit flew out of the creatures mouth in rapid succession, followed by a heavy snort washing over the silly stranger in a short, hot breath before the bear flung himself into the street once more.

((Why thank ye!))

Alex had, had his hand wrapped around the chain and was caught up in it. So the bear being a big and strong animal ended up dragging him along. He had been on his back for a time and if he hadn't had on his coat he would have gotten far worse injuries, as it was the jacket was getting shredded. After a few grunts he managed to get into a sitting position and slowly raised himself so that he was skiing down the street. "Clear the way. Bear running." He shouted the best he could, all the while trying to get the bear to make a stop.

Panting, the woman was scanning the street as fast as she could, before noticing a large black carriage. Four pearly white horses were in the front of it which made her scowl. She was sure that was the one he was talking of, causing her to rip her hat off her head and ruffling her scandalously short blonde hair. Rubbing her face, she turned around, facing where she had came from to truly look at the chaos. Men, women, and children were running around frantically as she expected - amusing her. Though...Why were they all running away the same direction.

CLEAR THE WAY. BEAR RUNNING.

"What is the blazes-" she started, before gasping. Tendon was bounding straight towards her.

"OH no no no - Tendon.. TENDON STOP."

She was backing towards the carriage slowly, Grabbing one of the wheels to brace herself for impact.

"Damn it!" she hissed, closing her eyes and wincing.

At that moment Alex saw his chance. He managed some odd maneuver and ended up slamming her into the carriage with his shoulder. It had hurt a lot and he would be surprised if it was bruised. "I did ask you nicely not to cause a headache. You know you truly are a terrible person. Leaving your pet behind. He went running after you. I swear if I didn't know better I would say he was your familiar."

Wheezing, she tried to push him away with her gloved hand in his face, smooshing it away from her.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" she barked, cursing as her boot got tangled into the bottom of her petting coat and making her stumble slightly as she slid across the adorned leather seat.

The bear continued to clamour upon the carriage, nearly tipping it over and it continued it's grutteral groans, causing the carriage driver to try and shove it off with his foot.

"I swear, don't you have anything better to do?! Anything at all, please!"

"Honestly we don't" Said Alex as he got in after the bear. The sides of the carriage locked and he began taking off his jacket. A few minutes later he had on a new coat and pulled the string he had early out. "Hands in front, side by side, touching. I have to retain you now." He waited patiently for her to do as he said.

With a loud, bratty sigh, she shuffled, trying to make room for her thicker legs as she glared at him, hands behind her back as if she was a child being punished.

Tilting her neck to the side so that she could crack her neck in a rather unladylike fashion, she snorted, looking out at the bear who seemingly understood, and stopped pushing against the carriage to sit in confused wonder.

"You're rideculous." was all she had left to say, as she watched the mage with an icy stare.

"What you don't think this string can't hold you?" Asked Alex as he finished tying it "Please do try." He slapped the side of the carriage that was closest to the driver and the carriage began to pick up speed. He then rummaged in a compartment at his feet and pulled out a tray that had some snacks on it and began popping them into his mouth.

Licking her lips, she eyed the tray rather hungrily, though leaning back into the plushy seat and diverting her attention out the window without a word. Stubbornness was always her strong suit.

Her bear was outside, looking straight at her as she was being toiled away rather sadly, though he was still obediently sitting on the cobblestone - other patrons making a clear circle around him as he seemed to be waiting, as if she was going to come out in any minute. Her frown deepened, though she would assume she wouldn't be gone long - there hasn't been a mage that caught her yet, after all.

The carriage was oddly rearing itself in an odd direction that she couldn't make off, confusing her especially when it seemed to be toiling out of the city gates itself, causing her to shift her eyes back and forth to her environment.

"I didn't realize that they moved the jail." she cheekily remarked, noticing that the carriage wasn't heading that way at all - but rather some place different.

"Taking me to a mage tower, are you?"

"Caught onto that now did we? Not many of you humans know about us. But yes. You'll be there for a little bit. Your bear will be there soon as well. I have already sent a message ahead telling a duo of the bear. He'll be in good hands." Said Alex as he removed his gloves to reveal pale hands. He looked up at the woman and not being one to stomach other people being hungry decided to risk his fingers. "Would you care for a piece? I know how it is to be hungry."

"You obviously need it more than I do." she snidely replied, shifting her weight to her shoulder so that she could rest her head against the window.

The rolling hills were getting rather boring. "Must be terrible to be a mage."

A bump upon the road made the whole carriage jump for a moment, causing her to bump her head against the glass. "Damn it all."

"It is what you get when you bad mouth magic." Said Alex with his mouth a little full. "Who else do you know can make their drinks cold with ease? In my opinion it is worse to be a mortal."

"In my opinion you should be silent." she retorted, shoving her back into the seat.

Time went by as they rode along, and admittingly - she might have dozed off a little until she felt the carriage come to a sudden stop, causing her eyes to flutter open and instantly look out the window. It didn't seem like they were anywhere close to where they needed to be...

"What's going on?" she mused. They were in the middle of a dirt path, seemingly no where in particular except that there was a forest that outstretched in front of them. That's when she noticed a couple of figures lurking behind trees and branches, causing her to sit up straight and growl like a feral beast.

"I do hope you have nothing of value on this carriage."

"Hush. Something is here that shouldn't be." Said Alex as he peered out the window once more. He had been scanning the area before she had said something. "It.... It isn't something.....What I am trying to say is that this is a magical beast. Nothing from mortal land. Even you felt it. It is why you woke up."
