"Or what?" Sage asked curiously, her eyes glimmering like a cat's. Suddenly, she closed them, her long dark lashes standing out against her smooth skin. She sighed.
"Jared, there's something you should know. My parents have these fancy, well-paying jobs that they care far too much about. So much that they've forgotten me." Her eyelids crinkled as she closed them tighter. "It's like I'm a ghost, like I'm not even in the house- that is when they're home." Her voice was high and very soft, almost a whisper. "They wouldn't care if I were dead in a ditch somewhere, much less the time that I get home." She opened her eyes wide and fixed them on Jared. "Some days I want to pretend that I'm knocked up so they might breathe in my general direction."
"So, Jared," She said, turning away confidently, her pitch resuming to normal and certainty returning to her voice. "What is your other option, because I can stay as long as you want me here."
